Competence
review process
The competence review
process includes simulated
practice scenarios and a
multiple-choice examination.
The scenarios are based on common
clinical situations and conditions that
the nurse could reasonably be expected
to manage safely.
The scenarios are videoed and sent
to three registered nurse assessors
who have no knowledge of the original
competence concerns and assess
the videoed simulations against
accepted criteria based on the
Council competencies.
The Nurse Advisor then analyses the
assessors’ reports, the multi-choice
exam results, the original competence
notification and the nurse’s response
to the notification. The Nurse Advisor
writes a report and may propose
orders such as the completion of
further education, practising under
supervision or completing a competence
assessment. If the nurse meets the
competencies during the review, no
further action will be taken.
If the nurse accepts the proposed
orders they become final orders. If not,
he or she may request a meeting with
a competence review committee and
provide a response to the proposed
orders. The committee may confirm,
vary or revoke the orders.
