BIG EAST VS WEST MATCH-UP
FRONTENACS AND GREYHOUNDS MEET IN BATTLE OF OHL’S BEST
vs
If there’s a game to watch in the OHL this weekend,
it’s very likely tonight’s match-up between the
Frontenacs and the visiting Sault Ste. Marie
Greyhounds. As of press time both teams were
seeded 3rd in their respective Conference, but
within a hair of 1st place.
edge in penalty killing, at almost 86 percent, while
the Greyhounds are effectively killing off penalties
78 percent of the time.
The Greyhounds are as red hot as their jerseys,
on an 11-game winning streak heading into
last night’s game in Peterborough. With only 3
regulation losses, the Greyhounds have amassed
an impressive 42 points in 25 games played so far
this season. Their record of 20 wins, 3 regulation
losses, 2 overtime losses, and 1 shootout loss gives
them 42 points, second best in the OHL. Their .840
winning percentage is the best in the league.
The Frontenacs, after Wednesday’s 4-1 win over
the Ottawa 67’s for the School Day Game, continue
their hot pace and have earned points in 8 of
their past 10 games. With 33 points in 26 games
played this season, the Frontenacs record of 14
wins, 7 regulation losses, 2 overtime losses, and 3
shootout losses has them tied for first in the Eastern
Conference with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Special teams will likely play a role in the win
tonight. Both the Greyhounds and Frontenacs have
similar powerplay success, with the Greyhounds
scoring 24 percent of the time and the Frontenacs
19 percent of the time. The Frontenacs do have the
BACK IN ACTION ON SUNDAY VS COLTS:
Sunday’s afternoon game against the Barrie Colts is
the first of 4 match-ups between the two top Eastern
Conference teams. The Colts currently sit 2 points
behind the Frontencas with two games in hand (as of
Thursday, November 30). - KF
CLOG UP THE NEUTRAL ZONE
The Greyhounds are a team with a lot of speed. If
you allow them to gather speed from their own end,
they can skate right by you and be in your zone, or
worse, score a goal on you before you can blink.
The best way to combat that speed game is to clog
up the neutral zone. If Kingston starts to take away
space at the Greyhounds blueline, it will throw of
the timing of the breakout. Without that timing,
Sault Ste Marie will struggle to make passes and
gain entry into the Kingston zone. By taking away
their clean zone entry, Kingston can slow down the
high-powered offence that they Greyhounds have.
CAPITALIZE ON EVERY OPPORTUNITY
When you look at the stats, one
thing sticks out about Sault Ste
Marie, they score a lot! However,
Kingston scores a decent amount
of goals as well, especially at home.
The team that wins this game could
be the team that doesn’t miss an
opportunity. Both teams are sure
to get quality scoring chances, and
with the way both teams can finish,
the team that misses on the fewest
number or those chances may
become the winner in the end.
WIN THE GOALTENDING BATTLE
Both starting goalies can expect a large work load in this game. It’s likely that both teams
go over 30 shots. In the first meeting of the season Sault Ste Marie snuck by Kingston with
a 6-5 win, however Jeremy Helvig did not play in that game. In a game that we expect to be
more focused on offence than defence, having one of the best goalies in the OHL is a huge
advantage. It’s unlikely that Helvig will be perfect, although that would be nice, but there
is a strong chance that he can outplay the guy at the other end. Goaltending is always
important, but when both teams are averaging around four goals a game the goaltenders
can steal the show. If Helvig does that, Kingston will have a great chance to take the win
against a strong Greyhounds squad.- KF
FRONTENACS
RISE AND SHINE IN WIN
by Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-Standard
BILLY KIMMERLY
Morning-time hockey perks up the Kingston
Frontenacs. Playing in school day promotional
games has been agreeable in past seasons for
the Frontenacs and Wednesday’s morning affair
against the Ottawa 67’s was no different.
The Frontenacs closed out a good month of
November with a 4-1 victory before 3,514,
the majority of those school-age children who
spiked the volume throughout the Ontario
Hockey League game.
The victory moved the Frontenacs into a tie
for first in the Eastern Conference with the
Hamilton Bulldogs.
“Everyone is confident on the team. We are
playing Jay’s system [head coach Jay Varady]
right,” goaltender Jeremy Helvig, who dropped
his goals-against average to 2.65 with a 35-save
effort, said.
Nathan Dunkley, Matt Hotchkiss, Sergey Popov
and Ted Nichol scored. Jason Robertson
assisted on three of the goals.
“We are playing great defence and we are
scoring goals. All that makes for a great
November,” Helvig said.
The Frontenacs won eight of 12 games in
November and picked up points in two other
games for a total of 18 points gained out of a
possible 24, a .750 percentage. They were all
much improved from their last effort against
Ottawa, a 4-2 loss on Nov. 19.
14 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

“I thought we established a pretty good identity,
mostly by managing the puck,” Varady said.
“We had good momentum in the first and
second and we were able to close it out.”
Helvig added that “we played hard, we
frustrated them.”
While the Robertson, Dunkley and Linus
Nyman line has been terrific in November, the
depth the Frontenacs have up front was again
on display against Ottawa. Hotchkiss scored
his first game-winning goal for the Frontenacs
since coming over from Guelph in a trade — he
has three goals in seven games in a Kingston
uniform — and Popov’s fifth of the season
opened up the three-goal spread that Ottawa
couldn’t close.
“Goals from those guys are
huge. When all our lines up front
contribute, we are a much better
team,” Varady said.
Robertson feels November has steeled the
team for the way it needs to play.
“The mentality of everyone in the locker
room and the work ethic has been up to par
recently and we want to keep it that way,”
said Robertson, adding that 26 games into
the 68-game schedule, the Frontenacs have
grown into the systems introduced by coach
Varady. “Everyone has bought into the system
and knows their role. Everyone can adjust to
any details like Jay says. It’s just a really good
situation and we want to keep rolling.”
While Robertson still leads the team in goals
with 17, three other teammates — Nyman,
Tyler Burnie and Ryan Cranford — have 10 or
more goals, and Dunkley, with nine, and Brett
Neumann, at eight, are other scoring sources.
“It is already great to have depth. We
struggled at that with the least amount of
goals in the [Canadian Hockey League] last
year,” Robertson said. “Our depth is giving
other guys the chance to be successful. I’m
glad everyone is having that success.”
The Frontenacs led 3-0 after two periods on
the goals from Dunkley, Hotchkiss and Popov.
Hotchkiss snapped a wristshot past Olivier
Tremblay at 2:09 of the second period.
Popov came out from behind the Ottawa net
and stuck the shot under the crossbar for his
fifth of the season.
In the first period, the Robertson line
continued its hot month, clicking on an evenstrength
play. Robertson bought some time
inside the line, getting defenceman Nikita
Okhoutyuk to back off. Then he passed to
Nyman, who in turn sent the puck across to
Dunkley.
Tremblay was coming across on the play, but
Dunkley was quicker, filling the open side for
his ninth of the season.
Eight of those goals have come in November,
a bountiful month for the sophomore forward.
Dunkley had 19 points for the month. - KF
