TOP EASTERN TEAM TILT
FRONTENACS AND COLTS FACE OFF IN BATTLE OF EASTERN CONFERENCE
vs
The Barrie Colts team the Kingston Frontenacs
faceoff against will be a much different one
than the Frontenacs faced last season. The
Colts, after finishing in last place in the league
with only 17 wins and 41 points in the 68-game
season, have been the team most are talking
about in terms of turnarounds this season. And
for good reason.
with the Colts scoring 17 percent of the time
and the Frontenacs 19 percent of the time.
The Frontenacs do have the edge in penalty
killing, at almost 86 percent, while the Colts are
effectively killing off penalties 81 percent of the
time.
Led by Lucas Chiodo–Barrie’s 15th round
pick in 2015–with 9 goals and 17 assists for
26 points, the Colts have begun a banner
season. While they’ve cooled a little lately–5
wins, 3 regulation losses, and 2 overtime losses
in their past 10 games–they’ve managed
to consistently stay at or near the top of the
Eastern Conference Standings.
The Frontenacs, after finishing 4th in the
Eastern Conference last season–6 places
higher than the Colts–are having an equally
impressive start. Wednesday’s 4-1 win over the
Ottawa 67’s at the School Day Game continues
their hot pace earning points in 8 of their past
10 games. With 33 points in 26 games played
this season and continue to battle for top spot
in the Eastern Conference.
In terms of special teams, both the Colts and
Frontenacs have similar powerplay success,
TEDDY BEAR TOSS ON FRIDAY:
The Kingston Frontenacs will face off against
the Niagara Icedogs in the annual Teddy Bear
Toss on Friday, December 8 in support of the
Salvation Army Toy Drive. Fans are encouraged
to bring a new plush toy to toss on the ice when
the home team scores their first goal of the
game. - KF
KEEP AN EYE ON THE ROOKIE
The Barrie Colts don’t lack anything
when it comes to offence. A big reason
for their offensive success is the play of
their young players. Andrei Svechnikov
and Ryan Suzuki have had fantastic
starts to their OHL careers. Svechnikov
had recorded 10 goals in 10 games
before suffering a hand injury that will
keep him out of the line-up today. Ryan
Suzuki has been quite the playmaker
since being selected 1st overall by
the Colts, racking up 13 assists to go
along with 2 goals in his 20 games.
The Frontenacs catch a break by not
having to face Svechnikov, but they
will have to keep an eye on #61 and
keep him in check.
STRIKE ON THE POWER PLAY
Both the Kingston Frontenacs and Barrie Colts
have strong penalty killing units. The Kingston unit
sits second in the league while Barrie sits fifth.
With special teams being such a huge part of the
game, the team that can crack the other’s penalty
kill will have the advantage. When power play goals
are as hard to come by as they are against these
two teams, a single goal on the man advantage
could be the difference.
CHECK THE NOTES ON THE GOALTENDER
Barrie goaltender Leo Lazarev is now in his fourth
year in the OHL. The first three years he was a
member of the Ottawa 67’s, a team that Kingston
faces eight times a season. The Frontenacs are
very familiar with his playing style, his strengths,
and hopefully the areas he struggles a bit. It’s a
great opportunity to review some film and take
advantage of the fact that Kingston has seen
Lazarev more than any other goalie in the league
over the past three seasons.
ACTIONS
S P E A K L O U D E R T H A N ‘ W O R D S ’
by Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-Standard [Originally published Tuesday, November 28, 2017]
November has been quite the month for Kingston
Frontenacs sophomore forward Nathan Dunkley.
Slowed down in October by a five-game suspension
handed to him by the Ontario Hockey League, the
17-year-old Campbellford native is now playing the
type of hockey that first drew Kingston’s attention in
his 2016 draft year, when the Frontenacs selected
him with their first pick.
“I am just trying to play the right way: stick to the
basics and worry about my own end first and let the
offence handle itself,” Dunkley, who has amassed
17 points in 11 games for the month, said.
Dunkley has only failed to pick up a point in one
game in November. He now has eight goals and 24
points in his 20 games played.
The suspension he took on Oct. 6, when he
directed some not-so-wise words toward the Flint
Firebirds players bench, came after he had opened
the season at a point-per-game production.
Obviously the suspension was his own doing and
Dunkley, who is in his National Hockey League
draft year, has come to grips with it.
“I own my suspension. I’ve put it behind me and
moved forward,” Dunkley said. “It was tough trying
to come back, but I think I’ve found my stride.”
It is no coincidence that Dunkley’s play took off
recently when head coach Jay Varady shuffled
lines, putting Dunkley at centre between Jason
Robertson and Linus Nyman.
“They are two great players [who] have great vision.
It makes my job so much easier,” Dunkley said.
Varady borrowed a phrase from Columbus Blue
Jackets head coach John Tortorella, who said that
he sometimes puts guys together for no real reason
and they turn out good together.
“These guys [Dunkley, Robertson and Nyman] got
together and they started to produce. As a group,
our team started to have a little success and you
just stay with that,” Varady said.
“I think Nathan’s biggest strength is his tenacity.
When he is playing his best, you see him winning
battles in the corner, going to the rough areas to
score [using] the middle drive to get to the right
spot.”
Dunkley is also earning some power-play time on
a main unit that uses his full line along with Tyler
14 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

BILLY KIMMERLY
Burnie at the top of the goal crease and Eemeli
Rasanen, as the lone defenceman, at the point.
“He has found a spot on the power play and he’s
been able to generate production,” Varady said.
“Going to the net is a huge part of my game. Trying to
scoop out loose pucks and rebounds,” Dunkley said.
“We are a working team, so we’ve got to make sure
we are getting pucks in deep and we are working
over the top of it. That has to be our mindset.” - KF
