The Ferguslie Learning Centre provides certificated
learning opportunities at beginner’s levels within a friendly,
community environment.
This Ferguslie Learning programme is designed to assist adult learners building upon their
Employability and Life skills. The Centre is based in the heart of Ferguslie and provides a
warm welcoming environment for adults returning to learning. If you’ve never had a job or are
returning to work after a break then this is the perfect introduction for you.

Monday
Furniture Upholstery Application
SQA certificated
27/08/18 to 17/12/18
9.30 am to 12.00 noon
This is a progression class for learners who have already
completed the Introduction to Sewing. This course is ideal if
you would like to try out upholstery and learn some basic skills
within a friendly group. You will learn traditional and modern
upholstery techniques, such as webbing and stuffing. This
could we be best suited to learners who already have basic
sewing skills.
Sewing with confidence
Non-certificated
27/08/18 to 17/12/18
1.00 pm to 3.30 pm
This class will be a relaxed sewing experience exploring the
absolute basics of hand sewing and simple stitches, this
course would assist learners at home with recycling existing
items within the home, if this sound like skills you would like to
expand on then this is the class for you.

Building Learning Opportunities
in our Communities (BLOC)

This fun, motivational workshops will help you identify your
skills and qualities, learn about stress, find the kinds of learning
or employment that suit you and inspire you to take positive
steps towards your future.

Preparing for Employment: First Steps

This course will prepare you for entering the world of work in a
safe, supportive and friendly environment. On the course you
will review;
Past experience and update/produce your CV
Match your existing skills with the work you want to do
Gain Job hunting skills
Complete an SQA qualification, which will assist you with
positive steps in your future.
The course is ideal for learners who are thinking about starting
work or returning to work after a long break.
GARDENING
SQA certificated
28/08/18 to 18/12/18
1.00 pm to 3.30 pm
This course will include a Community Activity in Gardening
in partnership with a local School. Learners will prepare for
the activity, participate in the activity and reflect upon the
outcome.

Wednesday
Working in Early Education and Childcare
SQA certificated
29/08/18 to 19/12/18
9.30 am to 12.00 noon
In this course you will take part in a group investigation into
provision in the early education and childcare sector for children
0-12 years and how it supports children and families. You will
also gain insight and understanding of the skills, and qualities
required to work in this field. This module is suitable for people
wising to progress onto higher education in childcare or gain
employment in the childcare sector in future.
Thursday
IT Office Skills: Communication in Administration
SQA certificated
30/08/18 to 20/12/18
9.30 am to 12.00 noon
Learners will use laptops to locate and
gather information from e-mail and internet,
use Power-point to create a presentation
and Publisher to produce a document (like
a newsletter). This course is suitable for
those with basic computing skills.
Developing Further in IT
SQA certificated
30/08/18 to 20/12/18
1.00pm to 3.30 pm
Learners will also gain skills in
Word by editing documents
Expand their knowledge of Power-point.
Setting up folders and files
Using internet and e-mail
Safety and security online risks.
This course is suitable for learners who already have basic
computing skills.
Friday
Care: Values and Principles
SQA certificated
31/08/18 to 21/12/18
9.30 am to 12.00 noon
If you are interested in working in the care sector then this
course is ideal for you. You will identify and report on features
of positive care practice, skills and qualities of a care worker and
how they meet the needs of users of care services.
Getting Started in IT
SQA certificated
31/08/18 to 21/12/18
1.00pm to 3.30 pm
You will gain an understanding of basic computing including
using Microsoft Word for word processing, saving files and
editing and printing documents , learners will also be using the
Internet.

41 year-old Kirsty Cairns was keen
to take her career in a new direction
One year on she is now working
towards completing her HNC in
Childhood Practice
Kirsty said, “I knew of the Ferguslie Learning Centre but
hadn’t really given it any consideration as I wasn’t sure
if it was for me. I had seen that the College offered an
online course ‘Caring for Children’ which would help me
gain a qualification that would help me take my career to
the next level, but with no access to computer at home I
wasn’t in the position to pursue it.”
After expressing her interest in the course to Kathleen
at the Ferguslie Learning Centre, Kathleen arranged for
Kirsty to do the course through the centre, allowing her to
use the centre facilities.
Since completing the course, Kirsty has went on to secure
employment at Hillview Nursery and is now working
towards completing her qualification.
My advice to anyone
contemplating a change would
be that nothing is out of your
reach, just give it a bash
Kirsty said, “Doing the course at Ferguslie has definitely
helped me to get to where I am now. If I hadn’t completed
the course I wouldn’t be in the job that I am now and I
wouldn’t now be working towards becoming a qualified
Pre 5 Practitioner.
‘My advice to anyone contemplating a change would
be that nothing is out of your reach, just give it a bash
and see where it takes you. Even if you have kids and
struggling to juggle it all, don’t think it’s impossible as
everything is possible if you want it.
Single Mum to four children, 29 year
old Maryann Wright from Paisley
tells us her story….
“I wanted to do something that would get me out of
the house so I went along to the open day to learn more
about the courses on offer. ‘It had been ten years since I
had been in an educational setting so I was nervous about
starting; but I needn’t have been. Everyone is in the same
boat and all a bit anxious so we were all in good company.
‘It’s been an invaluable experience, which has not only
enabled me to gain a qualification but it’s given me the
confidence and life skills that I can use in everyday life.
Having completed the Level 4 Childcare course with ease
Maryann was keen to challenge herself further, continuing
this year with Level 5.
“I really enjoyed the course but felt that bits of it were
maybe a bit easy for me, so I was delighted when they
introduced the Level 5 this year as I want to push and
prepare myself for fulltime study when my youngest
starts school.
‘The Ferguslie Learning centre is a fantastic platform for
anyone wanting to get back into learning and wanting to
engage with others. It’s one morning a week which is ideal
for people like myself with children.”
Not one to boast about her achievements, Maryann is
quietly proud of all she accomplished so far.
“I guess I am proud of just how far I’ve come over the last
few years. It’s not been easy juggling the children and
study but all the hard work has been worth it. I’ve grown in
so many ways and hope that this is only the start of what
is to come.
‘The ultimate
goal is to gain
employment
which will let me
provide a better
life for my kids.
Not only do I hope
to take them on
holiday but I hope
to inspire them to
want to do better
and to realise
that anything is
achievable with a
bit of hard work.”
