Hope House, based in Pinetown, is a home for abandoned babies and Natal Settlers Home is a non-profit organization who provides a residential facility and other care and support services for adults and disabled children. Health & Financial Wellbeing Is the Internet making you sick? Most of us use the Internet for everything – from seeking out relationship advice, reading about the latest fad diets, to viewing photos on Instagram. Thanks to the Internet, the world is at our fingertips and it’s no surprise that people are spending copious amounts of time online. An international social media and marketing agency, We Are Social, found that South Africans spend about eight hours a day online, including three hours on their mobile phones. Excessive online use may have a negative impact on your health. Many hours online may lead to the following health problems: 1 A weakened immune system If you spend more than four hours a day in the digital world, over and above your time at work, you may be weakening your immune system. A study on Swansea University’s website found that people who spent four hours online for personal use, had a 30% increased risk of colds and flu. The Internet itself didn’t make them sick, but the habits that go hand-in-hand with excessive online use may cause problems. One of the researchers, Professor Phil Reed explains: “We found that the impact of the Internet on people’s health was independent of a range of other factors, like depression, sleep deprivation, and loneliness, which are associated with high levels of Internet use and also with poor health.” 2 Higher stress levels People who are addicted to the Internet feel stressed when they don’t have access to it, according to Reed. Whenever you are not online, you may be feeling anxious, irritated, and desperate to get back in touch with the online world. Stress raises cortisol levels (stress hormones) in the body. High cortisol levels have been linked to various health problems including poor memory and learning abilities, lower bone density, weight gain, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you are feeling agitated when you don’t have your mobile phone nearby and you can’t do online surfing, you may be addicted to the Internet. 3 Nutrient deficiencies Internet users who spend too much time online eat smaller meals, have less of an appetite, skip meals, and snack more than people who don’t browse their days away, according to a study in the Nutrition Research and Practice Journal. When they snack, they make unhealthy choices including confectionery and fast food, which lack important vitamins and minerals. When you spend hours surfing the Internet every day, little time is left to prepare healthy meals. Nutrient deficiencies are linked to numerous illnesses as well as low energy. 4 Weak muscles You don’t see any people going through social media while running, because Internet usage normally requires you to sit down. Sitting for hours, without any regular workouts, can cause your muscles to weaken, and it may even change the shape of your butt, says Dan Giordano, co-founder of Bespoke Treatments Physical Therapy on Self. com. A sedentary lifestyle may contribute to various illnesses including diabetes and heart disease, while being unfit may also interfere with your ability to perform everyday tasks to the best of your ability. Don’t let the Internet take over your life. If you struggle to disconnect, schedule in other activities like a workout, a healthy family dinner, or some quiet time to take a break from screen time. Beat the interest calculation Interest is calculated daily and therefore you can also reduce your total repayment amount by making your bond payments earlier in the month than required.
