Our Soccer Team
From the desk of the CEO ...
Every year is new and exciting with surprises and also with
many things staying the same, some of it as we hope and
dream and then some not. The year of 2017 is again a
memorable one in a world where transparency and
ethical leadership is becoming a focus, although not
always with outcomes as we wish and hope for. The fact
that we talk about it and that visibility of issues is much
more than before, gives us hope and courage for what could be.
The one certainty I have and we all experience in the group is learning
and the improvement it brings not only to our organisation but also to each
individual. We are so proud to see how well our students have done this year
once again with the most recent Technologist exam result pass rate of 80%
and for the Phlebotomists once again a 100%. This remains consistently the
best in South Africa and we wish to again encourage use of the learning
growth path improving your and our lives.
Recently I was given the “The Book of Joy” which was written with Archbishop
Desmond Tutu and his holiness the Dalai Lama. The theme is lasting happiness in
a changing world and the book certainly does it justice with many inspirational
experiences and stories. Compassion is one of the pillars of joy and by being
vulnerable with an open heart sharing space, love and life, we are able to
experience it. In our interaction with each other and patients, giving care and
compassion is a truly joyful thing.
Have a wonderful and blessed festive season with your families and please
have a safe trip so we can start 2018 together with courage and hope for a
future where the rainbow nation finally comes of age - worthy of admiration,
fulfilling the dreams of all.
“It is hard to love others as you love yourself, if you don’t love yourself.”
- Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his holiness the Dalai Lama
Goodbye to valued staff & supporters
From the desk of the Editor
Value your value ...
Bloemfontein greets Dr Lelanie ...
Dr Lelanie Pretorius (Haematologist) will be joining the
Nelspruit Lab. Dr Reinette Weyers will be taking her
place.
One of my favourite songs “Where do
you go to my Lovely” by Peter Sarstedt
was playing on the radio this morning
and it struck a chord in my mind. In short, it tells a story
of a very poor girl who ended up as adult in extremely
wealthy circles and her friend is concerned ... Does she
sometimes, when she’s alone, remember where she came
from - growing up in the backstreets with him, begging for
food .... Does she remember the burning ambition they
both had to shake off their rags and to build a better life
for themselves? Does she remember to care for those in
desperate need as she once was ...?
Let us during this festive season and for the years to
come never forget those less fortunate around us and
appreciate what we have. Be thankful for what you have
by caring for and sharing with others and to always stay
humble and kind. Understand your worth, value your life
and appreciate your blessings ...
Dr Lelanie Pretorius, Dr Reinette Weyers and technologists Denise
Stuart & Alvine Janse van Rensburg
Ampath supporter retires
Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate
them to be happy, so they know the value of
things, not the price.
I wish all of you a wonderful festive season and may you
have a perfect, fulfilled 2018!
Ragel
Dr H de Swardt retired at the end of August 2017 at the age of 86
retired to be with his son in Port Edward and hopes to locum in the
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of
high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and
skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of
many alternatives. - Willa A Foster
Q FLAG WINNERS 2017
The Q-Flag, a symbol of our quest for quality and a sought after accolade in Ampath, is presented each year at the
Management Review Meeting to laboratories that have met selected criteria in either their Internal System Audit or
SANAS assessment for the period under review.
Patient care was largely the focus of the criteria evaluated.
The main aim of this program is to foster a culture of quality in Ampath. The Q-Flag is valid for a period of a year (criteria
for the Q-Flag is listed on the TQM site).
KZN Phlebotomy Interns: Group 8 Messages of Appreciation
The past two years has been an unforgettable
something I will make sure to follow in the coming years.
It has been an intense 2 years, but I loved
every minute of it! A big thank you to
Ampath for the amazing opportunity and
also to the Training department and my
after. Thank you to all my coaches that took
the time to guide and direct me and correct me where needed.
You guys are amazing - I hope I made you proud!
- Jamie-Lee O’Reilly
It’s been a long journey and not always
an easy one. However, with the help of our
facilitators, coordinator, coaches as well as the
staff at the depots and labs, I got through it. A
little thanks goes a long way, therefore I would
like to thank everyone who has helped me on
my journey for their motivation, inspiration,
hard work and dedication for helping me get where I am
today. Your support and help is truly appreciated.
- Laressa Naiker
Words cannot describe the caliber of coaches
that have played a vital role in our journey.
I want to thank every one of them, who
shared their invaluable experience and have
taught us a considerable amount of skill
for which I am truly grateful. Thank you
for allowing us to learn from you so we can
grow. To say thank you to the Learnership team would be an
understatement. You have added so much to our lives, not
only academically, but also personally. The effort you have
put into our lives will always be remembered and cherished.
- Michaela Pillay
I humbly give thanks to the entire
Learnership team and a special thanks to the
coaches, without whom this journey would not
have been possible. You gave me your TIME,
which is the most valuable gift of all!
This past 18 months has been a complete
rollercoaster for me, but I wouldn’t have
wanted to spend it with any other people than
the girls in my group, who have been the best
from the beginning and throughout my time
in the learnership - I have happily gained
sisters! The Learnership team have been
incredibly supportive and always pushing us to do our very
best. Thank you to everyone at the Training department, all
of our coaches at the labs and depots and everyone else that
has stood behind us. Now let’s knock ‘em dead girls...!
- Marilyn Reddy
My sincere appreciation goes to the
Learnership team for giving us this
amazing, life-changing opportunity. We
were truly privileged to learn from facilitators
who displayed tireless dedication and not
only believing in us, but also teaching us to
believe in ourselves. Thank you to our coaches
for their contribution by sharing their skills and experience
with us. Through guidance, support and dedication our
facilitators and coaches lead us to where we are today. No
words can truly justify how thankful we are.
- Snenhlanhla Ndlovu
They asked for only but a few words
accompanied by a million thanks, for what
was nurtured and groomed by them, but still
I thank you for the patience, persistence and
the thick skins to withstand the rebels at
Training department & all those that still
believe in us. - Melaine Ncingci Makhanya
The past 2 years has not always been the
easiest but it has taught me a lot and
brought me to a place where I never thought I
would be. I would like to extend my heartfelt
appreciation to my facilitators - thank you
for all the moaning, the laughs, the tears and
the best adventures, but most importantly for
pushing me this far. To the coaches, Srs-in-Charge and all
those that helped me in the workplace – thank you for taking
the time to coach me. Colossians 3:2 – Set your minds on
Health & Financial Wellbeing
Is the Internet making you sick?
Most of us use the Internet for everything – from seeking out relationship
advice, reading about the latest fad diets, to viewing photos on Instagram.
Thanks to the Internet, the world is at our fingertips and it’s no surprise that
people are spending copious amounts of time online. An international social
media and marketing agency, We Are Social, found that South Africans spend
about eight hours a day online, including three hours on their mobile phones.
Excessive online use may have a negative impact on your health. Many hours
online may lead to the following health problems:
1 A weakened immune system
If you spend more than four hours a day in the digital world, over and
above your time at work, you may be weakening your immune system.
A study on Swansea University’s website found that people who spent
four hours online for personal use, had a 30% increased risk of colds
and flu. The Internet itself didn’t make them sick, but the habits that
go hand-in-hand with excessive online use may cause problems. One
of the researchers, Professor Phil Reed explains: “We found that the
impact of the Internet on people’s health was independent of a range
of other factors, like depression, sleep deprivation, and loneliness,
which are associated with high levels of Internet use and also with poor
health.”
2 Higher stress levels
People who are addicted to the Internet feel stressed when they don’t
have access to it, according to Reed. Whenever you are not online, you
may be feeling anxious, irritated, and desperate to get back in touch
with the online world. Stress raises cortisol levels (stress hormones)
in the body. High cortisol levels have been linked to various health
problems including poor memory and learning abilities, lower bone
density, weight gain, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you are
feeling agitated when you don’t have your mobile phone nearby and
you can’t do online surfing, you may be addicted to the Internet.
3 Nutrient deficiencies
Internet users who spend too much time online eat smaller meals, have
less of an appetite, skip meals, and snack more than people who don’t
browse their days away, according to a study in the Nutrition Research
and Practice Journal. When they snack, they make unhealthy choices
including confectionery and fast food, which lack important vitamins
and minerals. When you spend hours surfing the Internet every day,
little time is left to prepare healthy meals. Nutrient deficiencies are
linked to numerous illnesses as well as low energy.
4 Weak muscles
You don’t see any people going through social media while running,
because Internet usage normally requires you to sit down. Sitting
for hours, without any regular workouts, can cause your muscles
to weaken, and it may even change the shape of your butt, says Dan
Giordano, co-founder of Bespoke Treatments Physical Therapy on Self.
com. A sedentary lifestyle may contribute to various illnesses including
diabetes and heart disease, while being unfit may also interfere with
your ability to perform everyday
tasks to the best of your ability.
Don’t let the Internet take over your
life. If you struggle to disconnect,
schedule in other activities like a
workout, a healthy family dinner, or
some quiet time to take a break from
screen time. If people complain that
you are spending too much time online,
and you are unable to stop, seek help
from your healthcare practitioner.
Five handy tricks to reduce your home loan
1. The bigger the deposit, the better
It is wise to allocate whatever money you can to your deposit when
applying for a home loan. This makes your application more likely to be
approved by the bank. If you pay a R 20 000 deposit on a R1 million home
loan it will reduce your total repayments by approximately R41 656.
2. Secure a lower interest rate
Use an expert mortgage originator to negotiate on your behalf to get the
lowest possible interest rate.
3. Pay extra each month
The simplest, ongoing way to reduce the term and cost of your home loan
is to pay in a little extra each month. Even paying in as little extra as R200
extra a month, will reduce the term of the repayments by more than a
year. Obviously, the more you pay in – the more you will save.
AMchat
2016 - 2017
4. Pay in unbudgeted extras
Paying in extra at any point reduces the interest from that point onwards,
so the earlier that you can make any bulk payment into your bond, the
better. This is especially useful if you have an access bond, because the
deposited extra money will reduce the interest you owe, but can be
withdrawn again should you need it.
5. Beat the interest calculation
Interest is calculated daily and therefore you can also reduce your total
repayment amount by making your bond payments earlier in the month
than required. Each day of interest saved positively impacts the overall
repayments.
Centurion contributes to 67 Blanket Project
Centurion NRL & Central Support Services
(CSS) accepted the challenge once again ...
48 most beautiful blankets were knitted/crocheted by NRL
& CSS! The love and dedication in the boardroom where
they were displayed were tangible and it made me wish
that I could just keep them all ...! One thing I know for sure
is that the same love felt by every person looking at them,
will be felt by each person that gets one.
All the blankets deserve 1st prize, but there were a few
outstanding works of art. The handover of the certificates
by Dr Leon Bosman (Senior HR Manager) took place in
the Main Boardroom, Centurion. Thank you NRL Prelab for
submitting the most blankets this year - 23 out of the total
of 48! Well done!
Ampath cares ...
KZN
Every year the way in which Ampath KZN staff donate
is remarkable. The generosity of all once again
allowed us to donate to the following organizations:
Little Angels
Hope House
This is a home for abandoned babies ranging in age
from 2 to 22 months of age, situated in Paradise Valley,
Pinetown. The money donated was used to purchase
baby formula, porridge, wet wipes etc.
The group is affiliated to Art of Living and look after 20
families in the Bottlebrush community which include
40 children. On Saturday, 3 December, the children
were treated to a small party with a meal, cupcakes
and a goodie bucket. Each family received a food
hamper bucket, a bag of toiletries and a bag of milk,
oil and custard. The group meet up with the children
on a weekly basis to educate and uplift them using
your donations of books, puzzles etc. The children
are also taught hygiene, responsibility and yoga to
mention just a few.
2016
The Princess Project makes a huge difference in the lives of
girls in need. Ampath is proud to be a part of this project
driven by Ammie Hogewind.
Grace House
Is an orphanage caring for 35 children. We made a
donation of toiletries and toys.
Mercy Missions
This group assists 350 children in the Richmond area.
The community consists of child-headed households
and very underprivileged families, many of which live
in very remote parts of Richmond. Our donation was
food, clothing and toys. The children were treated to
a fun day and also a meal.
The Sani Pass Cancer Challenge
Anne (2nd from left) and Madeleine
(2nd from right) at the starting point
POIM takes up
challenge once again ...
The devastation that childhood
cancer has on children and
their families is massive ...
Starting in 2015 we decided to
take up the CHOC SANI pass
challenge to support this great
cause and make a difference in
a small way - whilst challenging
ourselves physically at the same
time. The pain we would endure
for a few hours is really nothing
in comparison to the challenges
these brave children face daily
over an extended period of
time. This organisation also
lends support to the families
whose children are undergoing
treatment during this difficult
and emotional time.
The 2017 walk date is set for 12 August (the coldest time
imaginable) and we have already begun with some hill work in
our preparation to strengthen the legs and build stamina. Being
August, the probability of snow is there of course – and snow
against the stark winter landscape is beautiful – but snow, ice
and mud is quite challenging to walk on. While the distance
from border post to border
post is only 8km and 8km
down (Totalling 16km) – the
difficult part is the ascent of
1.3km with the gradient 1:3 in
places. This is pretty steep!
This walk is never a done
deal – what happens on the
day happens! Dehydration,
extreme weather conditions,
dust, wind, ice, snow,
dizziness, breathing difficulty,
falling, and many aches and
pains – we have experienced
them all. So this is a tough
challenge, but remains one
of the most incredible things
we have done. What is different is that you walk/hike against
yourself – there is no starter gun or timing - you begin at the SA
border post whenever you want to. There is minimal support on
the way with no seconding tables either so you carry all your
hydration and nutrition needs together with additional clothing
in your backpack.
Frozen waterfall in the
switchback
As we “pick” our way up - we stop
often to catch our breath and
admire the sheer beauty of this
environment, take photos and
generally just have quality time
laughing and sharing this special
time with each other. The frozen
waterfall on the switchbacks is quite
spectacular. We observed some
entertaining and scary driving skills
of inexperienced 4x4 drivers, some
taxis coming down from Lesotho
which look somewhat the worse for
wear as well as motorcycles being
dropped in those dreaded switchbacks close to the top. So Sani
Pass is not for “sissies” – whether in a vehicle or on foot.
From about halfway
we start to feel the
efforts of our exertion
and the peeling off of
a few layers of clothing
begins.These get tied
around the waist as
on the next corner
you may need them
again! We do not look
too glamorous at this
stage I must add. By
We made it to the pub!
the time you reach
half way you can see a tiny speck at the top, the “highest pub
in Africa” in Lesotho (at 2874 metres) - which you are aiming for
and you are already dreaming of that hot drink or a sherry and
a place to rest your feet a while, but gosh, it is so near yet so far!
Madeleine & Anne made it down again
- a welcome drink
On summiting and entering
Lesotho the excitement is
electric and we feel incredibly
proud of our achievement,
albeit exhausted. We go
through passport control in
Lesotho and head straight for
that pub. Lingering at the
pub is very tempting I might
add, but the trip down still has
to happen and tackling this
after too many sherries would
not be a good idea. This is the
ultimate in pain! Every muscle
in your legs is sore - as are your
feet. The loose stones and snow or ice is treacherous and we
have had some tumbles amongst us – luckily no broken bones.
But with all the pain of the past forgotten and hopefully some
lessons learned - we will be heading for Himeville in August 2017
to tackle this beautiful mountain pass and its challenges once
again ...
We are grateful for the encouragement that we received to give
it a try in 2015 and three years later we hope that we can do the
same for others to support this cause and challenge yourselves.
