67 Blankets Ceremony
The Blanket Handover Ceremony ....
Blankets from all the regions were handed over to the
67 Blankets for Mandela Foundation at Cedar Place on
28 July 2017.
Thank you to all the participants for your dedication and
hard work. Each blanket was made with lots of love,
effort and pride. The commitment and time that you
have put into making them will keep someone warmer this winter and
for more winters to come.
The four judges had a difficult task to pick only 3 winners out of the 175
blankets received, as each blanket was a work of art on its own. Prizes
were as follows:
Individual with the most standard size blankets:
Beatie Nel - 9 blankets! (Dr Tjiattas’ area)
The region with the most standard size blankets:
45 blankets (Dr Tjiattas’ area)
Best blankets:
1st - Dalene Langenstranss (Milpark)
2nd - Karen Schutte (Empangeni KZN)
3rd - Ilse van Deventer (Prelab NRL)
The next challenge is a 4.5km portrait ...!!! “The idea was to keep it
as simple and straightforward as possible to create the most effective
depiction of the face of our beloved Nelson Mandela, which will only be
visible from the sky,” 67 Blankets for Mandela founder Caroline Steyn
said.
Each pixel will be a square blanket measuring 160x160cm. The 67
Blankets team require 1764 blankets in six specific colours to be knitted
or crocheted. The finished product will cover an area of 4515m²!!Let’s
start knitting!
