Our own iron men ... Central Data Capture Department’s own Iron Man Bongani Cebekhulu (Pietermaritzburg Driver) did us all proud by running his 6th Comrades Marathon on 4 June 2017. He finished with a time of 11 hours and 50 minutes walked away with a bronze medal! Congratulations to Christo Lourens from Central Data Capture on achieving 1st Place in the 1000 km Senior Male Gauteng North Challenge. Well done, Christo!! Believe it or not, he was bright and ready for work the next day! Congratulations and well done, Bongani!! Kingsway Lab Charity Drive All staff were involved to feed the Malukazi Clinic on 28 August - either they assisted in making sandwiches, contributed money towards the cause or they assisted in running the lab whilst others were participating in the charity drive. To feed the less fortunate, we’ve made and distributed 550 sandwiches, 550 cups of juice and oranges. Well done, Kingsway! They are not just kids - they are future leaders. Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. We can make a living by what we get, But we make a life by what we give. Page 22 AMchat 2016 - 2017
The Sani Pass Cancer Challenge Anne (2nd from left) and Madeleine (2nd from right) at the starting point POIM takes up challenge once again ... The devastation that childhood cancer has on children and their families is massive ... Starting in 2015 we decided to take up the CHOC SANI pass challenge to support this great cause and make a difference in a small way - whilst challenging ourselves physically at the same time. The pain we would endure for a few hours is really nothing in comparison to the challenges these brave children face daily over an extended period of time. This organisation also lends support to the families whose children are undergoing treatment during this difficult and emotional time. The 2017 walk date is set for 12 August (the coldest time imaginable) and we have already begun with some hill work in our preparation to strengthen the legs and build stamina. Being August, the probability of snow is there of course – and snow against the stark winter landscape is beautiful – but snow, ice and mud is quite challenging to walk on. While the distance from border post to border post is only 8km and 8km down (Totalling 16km) – the difficult part is the ascent of 1.3km with the gradient 1:3 in places. This is pretty steep! This walk is never a done deal – what happens on the day happens! Dehydration, extreme weather conditions, dust, wind, ice, snow, dizziness, breathing difficulty, falling, and many aches and pains – we have experienced them all. So this is a tough challenge, but remains one of the most incredible things we have done. What is different is that you walk/hike against yourself – there is no starter gun or timing - you begin at the SA border post whenever you want to. There is minimal support on the way with no seconding tables either so you carry all your hydration and nutrition needs together with additional clothing in your backpack. Frozen waterfall in the switchback As we “pick” our way up - we stop often to catch our breath and admire the sheer beauty of this environment, take photos and generally just have quality time laughing and sharing this special time with each other. The frozen waterfall on the switchbacks is quite spectacular. We observed some entertaining and scary driving skills of inexperienced 4x4 drivers, some taxis coming down from Lesotho which look somewhat the worse for wear as well as motorcycles being dropped in those dreaded switchbacks close to the top. So Sani Pass is not for “sissies” – whether in a vehicle or on foot. From about halfway we start to feel the efforts of our exertion and the peeling off of a few layers of clothing begins.These get tied around the waist as on the next corner you may need them again! We do not look too glamorous at this stage I must add. By We made it to the pub! the time you reach half way you can see a tiny speck at the top, the “highest pub in Africa” in Lesotho (at 2874 metres) - which you are aiming for and you are already dreaming of that hot drink or a sherry and a place to rest your feet a while, but gosh, it is so near yet so far! Madeleine & Anne made it down again - a welcome drink On summiting and entering Lesotho the excitement is electric and we feel incredibly proud of our achievement, albeit exhausted. We go through passport control in Lesotho and head straight for that pub. Lingering at the pub is very tempting I might add, but the trip down still has to happen and tackling this after too many sherries would not be a good idea. This is the ultimate in pain! Every muscle in your legs is sore - as are your feet. The loose stones and snow or ice is treacherous and we have had some tumbles amongst us – luckily no broken bones. But with all the pain of the past forgotten and hopefully some lessons learned - we will be heading for Himeville in August 2017 to tackle this beautiful mountain pass and its challenges once again ...
