This month’s cover story
examines the wide-ranging
changes signalled by
the new coalition government
for forestry, a crucial sector in
the Bay of Plenty’s economy.
The new government’s
commitment to planting one
billion trees in the next decade,
and to relocating the head
office of a new ministry of forestry
in Rotorua, have drawn
wide attention in the region
and generally welcomed across
the sector.
The new ministry will be
responsible for developing and
implementing a wide-ranging
and comprehensive national
forestry strategy.
But our wide-ranging interviews
with industry sources
indicate there will be a number
of key challenges for the ministry
to grapple with, including
the availability of land and
labour, and ongoing tensions
between some of the wood
processing, and log exporting
sectors of the industry.
In this issue we also examine
the disconnect between
what seems to be a growing
global enthusiasm for electric
vehicles (EVs) and the failure
so far for plug-in and charge

cars to have significant uptake
in the local market.
The arrival of EVs is
unlikely to do much about
Tauranga’s traffic woes, but
they have received significant
media coverage over the past
year or so as a potential game
changer, in large part because
of promised improvements
related to carbon emissions.
But they have so far failed
to make a major impact on
local driving habits.
It was great to see
Tauranga’s Bayfair Shopping
Centre, which has a lengthy
track record in sustainability
and accessibility, win two
categories at the 2017 NZI
Sustainable Business Network
Awards.
The centre took out the
top prize in the Hardwired for
Social Good category and was
also awarded the judges, commendation
for Revolutionising
Energy.
Bayfair was also a finalist
in the supreme category – the
NZI Greatest Contribution to
a Sustainable New Zealand
Award.

The role is to manage and develop new business for the Bay of Plenty
Business News in both our print and digital offering.
Achieving top results for clients and maintaining ongoing relationships
are key factors in this position, whilst working alongside a very
successful team. Experience selling both print and digital media would
be a distinct advantage.
• Ideally have advertising or similar sales experience within the
media industry
• Enjoy the challenge of cold calling as well as managing a very busy
client base
• Get a buzz out of meeting and exceeding sales targets
• Sales and/or customer services experience is essential
• A can do positive attitude and ability to work independently and
self-manage your workload
• Be able to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and meet
tight deadlines
• Good computer skills are important along with good typing skills -
experience using a CRM system would be an advantage
• Have the ability to follow processes with high organisation and time
management skills
• Possess an excellent phone manner that is always friendly and
professional
• Have strong relationship building skills and a keen interest in
achieving results
• An ability to multi-task with a high level of accuracy
