ROYAL GOLF CLUB
Mariánské Lázně
Initiated by the town‘s representatives upon the request
of international spa guests, the original 9-hole Mariánské
Lázně golf course was built and opened along with the
clubhouse in 1905. Both quickly became exceptionally
popular, particularly amongst the English and American
guests – his Majesty Edward VII of the United Kindom
and the British ambassador in Vienna were among the
first club members. The appreciation of the Royal Family
is still alive today with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
granting the Mariánské Lázně golf club the right to
use the title ‘Royal Golf Club’ in 2003 and HRH Prince
Edward came to play there in 2005.
Over the years, the ‘Marienbad‘ Golf Club has hosted
several important international tournaments like the
Chemapol Trophy Czech Open `94-´96, the European
Senior Team Championship 2001 and the St. Andrews &
Jacques Leglise Trophies 2006. Following in royal footsteps,
the club also has seen dozens of world famous
golf professionals test themselves on the course.
The popularity of golf at Mariánské Lázně grew constantly
and the course, planned by Scottish professional
Robert Doig of Musselburgh, was extended to 18 holes
in 1923. During the communist era, after World War II,
golf was officially considered ‘a game unsuitable for the
working class’. But the club’s members managed to pull
through and in the late 1960ies even succeeded in sending
a representative team of players to several international
championships.
„This kind of tradition you have
here in Marienbad cannot be bought
for any kind of money!
