CLASS NOTES<br />

real estate agent showed us<br />

our house, we put <strong>in</strong> an offer<br />

without know<strong>in</strong>g much about<br />

the village, other than Montpellier<br />

was close by, which was<br />

important s<strong>in</strong>ce the city has a<br />

reputation of be<strong>in</strong>g dynamic<br />

and on the upsw<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Ten years later, I am so<br />

grateful to live <strong>in</strong> France. Yes,<br />

we have our problems here,<br />

and people def<strong>in</strong>itely disagree<br />

how to address them. But<br />

France has many systems <strong>in</strong><br />

place to help protect and support<br />

people on every level—<br />

economically, educationally,<br />

medically, socially, physically. I<br />

am at ease <strong>in</strong> this country and<br />

am very happy to call it my<br />

home.<br />

Not speak<strong>in</strong>g a lot of French<br />

these days---have a 28 year old<br />

gobs of tennis on teams <strong>in</strong> NH.<br />

from Institut des Sciences Politiques<br />

and from Université de<br />

my time between Europe and<br />

NYC.<br />

After liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> New York and<br />

Boston for several years, I am<br />

once aga<strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> CT. I rema<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> close contact with Jane<br />

Bell, Elizabeth Jensen, Charlotte<br />

Smith, Peter D’Amario,<br />

along with Lynn Ellen Queen,<br />

and Scott Daube. The years<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> have been<br />

full, with marriage, career, travel<br />

and children (two sons, both<br />

adopted from South Korea). I<br />

look forward to a reunion for<br />

our 40th—shall we plan on<br />

<strong>Paris</strong>?<br />

We moved to London <strong>in</strong><br />

1992, and settled there. My<br />

three children are now 25, 23<br />

and 19 and all live <strong>in</strong> the UK.<br />

My daughter Carol<strong>in</strong>e spent<br />

her Junior Year <strong>in</strong> France with<br />

Mount Holyoke’s program<br />

<strong>in</strong> Montpelier. I rema<strong>in</strong> close<br />

friends with Charlotte Smith,<br />

I have six children, two<br />

grandchildren and now live<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Basque Country. I met<br />

my husband-to-be and came<br />

back to France the day after<br />

graduat<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>Sweet</strong> <strong>Briar</strong> to<br />

marry him and have lived here<br />

ever s<strong>in</strong>ce. I have just f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g my first novel about my<br />

year <strong>in</strong> France on the SBC Program<br />

and am go<strong>in</strong>g to publish<br />

it soon!<br />

I live and work <strong>in</strong> Manhattan<br />

as a teacher. I have been<br />

married for five years to my<br />

life partner Carlos Fernandes<br />

from Portugal. I return to<br />

France almost yearly, mostly<br />

to Deauville where I went to<br />

high school and to Manosque<br />

<strong>in</strong> Provence where I often see<br />

family friends. Although far<br />

more mature than <strong>in</strong> 1979, I<br />

still have a taste for mischief.<br />

Elizabeth Jensen<br />

Northwestern University<br />

I jo<strong>in</strong>ed NPR <strong>in</strong> 2015, as<br />

their Ombudsman/Public Editor,<br />

after a career <strong>in</strong> newspaper<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g. The last year has<br />

been a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g one represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

public radio listeners<br />

and address<strong>in</strong>g questions of<br />

journalism ethics.<br />

I have been liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Montreal,<br />

Canada. I practice <strong>in</strong><br />

commercial litigation for my<br />

own law firm Mitchell Gattuso<br />

which is a boutique law firm of<br />

20 lawyers <strong>in</strong> downtown Montreal.<br />

I recently “retired” from a<br />

long career as Director of Corporate<br />

& Foundation Relations<br />

at Cornell and am tak<strong>in</strong>g a bit<br />

of a break before I embark on<br />

the next chapter. Emily, the<br />

older of my two daughters<br />

just graduated from Phillips<br />

Exeter Academy <strong>in</strong> June and<br />

is plann<strong>in</strong>g a gap year before<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g off to U. Chicago. She is<br />

off WWOOF’<strong>in</strong>g (work<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

an organic farm) <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> this<br />

summer and has asked me to<br />

help her f<strong>in</strong>d a way to get to<br />

<strong>Paris</strong> next w<strong>in</strong>ter/spr<strong>in</strong>g so she<br />

can learn French <strong>in</strong>tensively<br />

while possibly also liv<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

a family where she could be of<br />

use, tutor<strong>in</strong>g English, prepp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for SATs, provid<strong>in</strong>g after-care. I<br />

couldn’t resist turn<strong>in</strong>g my news<br />

<strong>in</strong>to an “advice welcomed”<br />

blurb, as everyone read<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

probably remembers when<br />

they were try<strong>in</strong>g to figure out<br />

the best way to get themselves<br />

to <strong>Paris</strong>!<br />

James Magruder<br />

Cornell University<br />

I live <strong>in</strong> Baltimore with my<br />

partner of twenty years, Steve<br />

Bolton. We have three grandsons<br />

on the West Coast, whom<br />

we adore and spoil. I teach,<br />

depend<strong>in</strong>g on my schedule,<br />

dramaturgy at Swarthmore<br />

<strong>College</strong>, and adaptation at the<br />

Yale School of Drama, where<br />

I received my doctorate back<br />

<strong>in</strong> the day. This past spr<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

I taught “How French Is It?,<br />

a gallop through the French<br />

dramatic canon from 1300-<br />

1900,” at the Drama School. I<br />

have published three works of<br />

fiction and I am currently represented<br />

on Broadway with Head<br />

Over Heels, a musical mash-up<br />

of the song catalogue of the<br />

Go-Go’s and Sir Philip Sidney’s<br />

Arcadia. I co-wrote the book,<br />

and my work is <strong>in</strong> blank verse.<br />
