Facebook has launched a feature
to let you temporarily hide annoying
friends from your newsfeed. The feature,
Snooze, allows you to unfollow
a person, page, or group for 30 days.
With Snooze, you can clear your
News Feed of friends you still like,
but who currently won’t stop posting
about their recent exotic vacation,
wedding, or new cat. When their life is
back to normal, you can “Unsnooze”
them, and they’ll be none the wiser.
If you don’t Unsnooze, though, a
Snooze will automatically expire after
a month. Don’t worry — you’ll be
notifi ed, so if someone’s vacation
or cat-picture phase lasts longer
than that, you can renew as needed.
The option to Snooze a friend
will appear in the right-corner
drop-down menu on their posts.
If you don’t have the option yet,
it should appear in the next few
weeks as the feature rolls out.
Facebook has been monkeying
around with its News Feed lately,
in an effort to get people to share
more, and more often, on the network.
Features like Unfollow, Hide,
Report, and See First have always allowed
users some degree of control
over the content of their news feeds.
But Facebook’s elimination of the
Ticker tool earlier this week worried
some users that the company
was trying to restrict this control.
Facebook also just launched
more granular controls about
which parts of Facebook you want
the things you post to appear.
Those users can rest slightly easier after
this release. It grants users yet another
element of control over their own
Facebook experience, and keeps
the News Feed — to some extent, at
least — in the hands of its readers.
Facebook’s algorithms are sophisticated,
but they haven’t overtaken us
yet.
Will $100 Million From Bill Gates
Solve Alzheimer’s Disease?
The Microsoft founder thinks
it’s time for a drastic change in
the race to cure one of the top
killers of Americans. Microsoft
founder Bill Gates announced
that he would be donating $100
million dollars toward Alzheimer’s
research. The donation
will be invested immediately,
with $50 million going toward
the Dementia Discovery Fund,
a British venture capital fund,
and the remaining $50 million
funneled to startup ventures
working toward finding a cure
to Alzheimer’s. That’s a lot of
money, even from a billionaire
like Gates. But it can be hard to
wrap your head around $100
million, and it’s fair to wonder
exactly how this will help in the
fight against the disease, which
is characterized by deteriorating
cognitive function and the complete
loss of memory.
The disease has no cure—yet.
Gates wrote in a post on Gates-
Notes that he was inspired to
invest toward finding a cure for
Alzheimer’s after several members
of his family fell ill to the
disease. It’s also extremely
expensive to treat Alzheimer’s,
Gates noted. “I first became interested
in Alzheimer’s because
of its costs—both emotional
and economic—to families and
healthcare systems,” he wrote.
“The financial burden of the disease
is much easier to quantify.
A person with Alzheimer’s or another
form of dementia spends
five times more every year outof-pocket
on healthcare than a
senior without a neurodegenerative
condition…
But does money help solve
seemingly insurmountable
diseases? When it comes to
Alzheimer’s, the answer is a
resounding yes, according to
Harry Johns, the CEO of the Alzheimer’s
Association.
“The biggest problem in the drug
pipeline is that we have histori-
cally too little investment,” he
said, prior to human testing,
which takes years and millions
to achieve before any drug can
even apply for recognition by the
FDA. That’s why, despite over
400 drug trials in the last 15
years, there’s been zero treatments.
“We need to stop progression,
even potentially stopping it before
symptoms occur,” Johns
said, saying gene therapy could
be one way to consider the treatment
of the incurable disease.
“We can potentially hold off the
impact of the disease. We need
a variety of approaches for innovative
treatments, but we don’t
have one thing that works.”
Gates’ donation is going into a
“private-public research partnership,”
and that’s important
to note because the current
model of relying only on government-funded
initiatives is simply
not working. The natural pipeline
for science and research
has always relied on universities
but Gates is looking to startups
to think about the problem with
fresh eyes, including considering
how the brain and immune
system communicate through
lymphatic vessels, which carry a
fluid that fight foreign particles
while also clearing out cellular
trash. Research published just
last month suggests a failure in
lymphatic vessels could be the
commonality between Alzheimer’s
patients.
“We’re making sufficient progress,
but we need to get to
those outcomes sooner rather
than later,” Johns said. “More
than 5.5 million people have
this disease”—and every minute,
another person develops.
For Alzheimer’s patients,
Gates’ investment might be the
game-changer they’ve been
waiting for.
Fun Family Traditions
To Start The New Year
The gift-giving holidays have come and
gone. The hanukkiah is safely tucked
away, and the tree’s lights are coming
down. The year is done, and it’s
time to celebrate, but now that you’re
a little older it’s time to nix the latenight
New Year’s Eve plans. Replace
the old night of champagne-fueled
fabulousness with a New Year’s Day
of family fun. Check out these ideas,
treats, and family activities that keep
the merriment going year after year!
1. Refl ection Questions: You’ve had
an entire year’s worth of moments
to remember. That’s 365 days of
laughter, surprises, sweetness, and
so much more. Print out refl ection
cards, and use them to ask each
other to name their bests, favorites,
and most memorables of the year.
Start when your kiddo is a baby,
and keep going as they grow. In a
few years your little one can start
giving their own awesome answers.
2. Printable Party Hats: Print-andcolor
hats are so, so, so simple —
and the kids will totally get into the
craftiness of this New Year’s activity.
Keep each year’s hat, adding to the
collection. By the time your now-tot
is ready to head off to college, you’ll
have a stack of hats to refl ect upon.
3. Time Capsule: Re-use an old bell
jar to magically transform it into
a time capsule. Gather the family
‘round, fi ll the capsule with anything
that’s memorable from the
year before, seal it up, and set it
aside for the future. Way, way, way
into the future: The longer you wait
to open it, the more fun it will be.
4. Milk and Cookies: It’s time to
leave those frosted Santas and
sprinkle-covered reindeer cookies
behind. Start a New Year’s cookie
tradition (and really, who doesn’t
enjoy a tradition that revolves
around cookies?) with homemade
chocolate chip deliciousness and
champagne glasses fi lled with milk.
5. Pizza Party: Calling all foodies for
this festive — and totally tasty — tradition.
The littles love their pizza, but
you’re not exactly up for a New Year’s
ordered-in pie. So make your own:
Your own pizza and your own tradition.
6. Homemade Hot Chocolate: Forget
about the mimosa bar: It’s time
for a new New Year’s Day drink. Set
up an annual hot cocoa bar, making
your own mixes (and adding your own
mix-ins). Create a new signature hot
chocolate fl avor each year to keep
this sweetly steamy tradition going.
Winter Myth...
That you need to idle your car before driving !
We’ve all heard the idea: In winter,
your car needs a little time to warm
up before you can drive it. And that’s
why across the United States, people
who live in cold and snowy places --
and especially those whose cars have
remote starters -- often fi re up their
engines long before they start driving.
Heck, they might even start the car
from the kitchen in the morning, and
only then start the coffee brewing.
But it turns out that this idea of
idling your car during the winter
is just wrong. A 2009 study
found that on average, Americans
thought they should idle for over 5
minutes before driving when temperatures
were below 32 degrees!
ning up gas, but getting no miles for it.
But it’s not just fuel waste, it’s the
accompanying emissions. What does
it look like when you have a whole
population of people -- or at least
the northern belt of a country like
the U.S. -- idling their cars in winter?
A 2009 study in Energy Policy tried
to calculate the consequences. The
researchers found that, overall, all
types of vehicle idling -- idling in winter,
idling while waiting for someone
or something, and idling in traffi c --
contribute a staggering 1.6 percent
of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.
That number is “almost double
the total emissions for the iron
and steel manufacturing industry
That is not to say that all idling should
be stopped immediately. Some idling
-- particularly in traffi c -- may be unis
Like many misconceptions, the
idea behind winter car idling begins
with a kernel of truth. Cars
do get worse fuel economy when
it’s really cold out -- they are at
least 12 percent less fuel effi cient.
Moreover, older cars -- which relied
on carburetors as a crucial
engine component -- did need to
warm up to work well, according
to several auto industry experts.
idling will always be stuck in place
is unavoidable. But the other two categories
of idling -- in winter and while
waiting -- make a lot less sense. And
the study found that they account
for nearly half of all U.S. greenhouse
gas emissions attributable to idling.
When 1,300 Americans were surveyed
about idling for the study,
the average amount of time that
respondents thought you should
idle your car before driving, when
it is lower that 32 degrees Fahrenheit
outside, was 5.01 minutes!
And since that’s the average,
many people thought you should
idle for a lot longer than that.
“These values indicate that beliefs
about how much idling is appropriate
or desirable are highly
distorted,” the authors wrote.
The study found that if people
would just knock off unnecessary
idling of this sort, then consumers
as a whole would save
$5.9 billion per year on fuel costs
(based on the cost of fuel in 2008).
welfare issues prior to the incorporation
of the Farley Foundation.
John grew up in Syracuse, NY and
received both his B.A. and J.D. degrees
at Syracuse University. John
practiced corporate law in the Northeast
hub of cities prior to moving to
the Sandhills in 2004. Betsy grew
up in Youngstown, OH and had a
twenty year career with Southwest.
They currently have three rescue
dogs as well as three rescue cats.
John and Betsy created The Farley
Foundation initially as a potential
forum for animal welfare advocacy,
pet responsibility and education.
Changing circumstances took them
in a different direction. Their mission
is to reduce unnecessary euthanasia
of otherwise unwanted,
adoptable animals in Moore County
and elsewhere in North Carolina
In the Fall of 2014 they began facilitating
the rescue, transport, and
adoption of kittens with a northern
rescue group. Soon thereafter,
Debbie Adoree and Jimmy Dickenson,
owners of Seven Lakes Kennels,
generously donated the use
of an area adjacent to their business
containing 20 large kennels.
The Farley Foundation’s objectives
include promoting “no-kill” advocacy;
preventing animal cruelty; encouraging
animal welfare volunteer-ism,
supporting spay, neuter and pet
identifi cation programs; and working
with other local animal welfare organizations
in achieving similar goals.
On average, and accounting for all
of their expenses, each rescued
dog costs The Farley Foundation
nearly $500 to complete the process
they insist upon following.
Adoption fees only cover about
50% of those costs. The difference
is covered by private donations.
They have eliminated the unnecessary
killing of homeless adoptable
animals in Moore County and elsewhere
in North Carolina by rescuing
animals from public “kill” facilities;
providing superior care at their facility
through extensive socialization
techniques and programs.
Due to their efforts, 300 animals
will be enjoying the holidays with
their families in forever homes.
Try a simulator. So maybe pounding a ball into an oversized screen is
not the same thing as feeling a breeze in your face and the grass under your
feet. But the competitive exercise of trying to grind out a score is still rewarding.
Try a high visibility yellow golf balls
Not so long ago, yellow balls were the preserve of driving ranges and rockhard
budget balls.
Try Hank Haney’s advice and make 100 swings a day. The
noted instructor says the best way to groove a swing is to repeat it without
worrying about where the ball is headed.
Follow your ball into the sun
Track the ball from the moment it takes off until just before it reaches the
heart of the sun. Now, instead of continuing to follow it, and losing it, turn
your attention to the spot where you think it will land; you’ll soon see it come
into view.
Strengthen your golf muscles. Most experts will tell you building
your core strength will serve you in multiple aspects of life, not just golf.
Test out new equipment. There are all kinds of practical reasons
why you should do this—your clubs are outdated, your swing has changed or
someone got you a gift certifi cate.
Upgrade your golf gear. Those saddles shoes you haven’t worn in
three years. That baggy shirt from a long ago member-guest you’ll never
wear again.
Up your golf IQ. There are stacks of golf books out there that will help
make the winter pass quicker.
Take up bowling. David Owen editor of Golf Digest has described bowling
as a “wintertime golf methadone”—an activity featuring a familiar mix of
competitiveness, camaraderie, and bad shoes. “ Mostly what bowling offers
in the absence of golf is a chance to get your buddies together to do something
other than just drink and eat.
Play real golf. Outside. At some point they stopping cutting real holes
into the greens, but it’s not like they build a barricade around the golf
course.
Tips for Your First Day
We strongly recommend that you take a lesson. Like anything, you’ll
improve the most when you receive some guidance. The best way to
become a good skier or snowboarder is to take a lesson from one of our
professional instructors. You’ll safely learn more in a one-hour lesson
that you will all day on your own.
• Obtain proper equipment. Be sure to have your ski or snowboard
bindings adjusted correctly. You can rent quality
ski or snowboarding equipment at Beech Mountain Resort.
• Dress in layers. Layering allows you to accommodate your
body’s constantly changing temperature. For example, dress in
polypropylene long underwear (top and bottom), which feels good
next to the skin, dries quickly, absorbs sweat, and keeps you warm.
Wear a turtleneck, sweater or sweatshirt. Wearing the proper
outer layer is important. Insulated, waterproof pants and coats
are essential (these are available for rent in our clothing rental
department).
• Be prepared for changing weather. Have something for your head to
keep your head and ears warm (a full facemask and helmet are other
options, too). Wear insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens; mittens
are typically warmer.
• Know your limits. Learn to ski and snowboard in control.
• If you’re tired, take a break. It is not a good idea to ski or snowboard
when you are tired; it is usually when most injuries occur.
• Have fun!
Tips For Women Business Owners
Women are an integral part of the
workforce, but they have had to
overcome many obstacles along
the way. Are you a woman considering
“setting up shop” on your own?
If so, here are five tips to consider:
Balance your goals. It’s possible
– perhaps even likely – that your
business goals will conflict with your
personal financial goals. After all, if
you’re purchasing new equipment or
services for your business, you’ve got
less money – at least for the time being
– to put away for your own retirement
or your children’s education.
Create a retirement plan. As mentioned
above, your ability to contribute
to a retirement plan may be affected
by the amount you put into
your business – but that certainly
doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a retirement
plan. In fact, for your future
financial security, it’s essential that
you launch such a plan. Fortunately,
small-business owners have a choice
of plans, including an “owner-only”
401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA.
They all offer tax-deferred earnings,
which means your money
has the opportunity to grow faster
than if it were placed in a vehicle
on which you paid taxes every year.
Plus, your contributions to a retirement
plan may be tax deductible.
Arrange for “backup. Women
are still more likely than men to
drop out of the workforce for an
extended period of time to care
for young children or elderly parents.
And your caregiving responsibilities
won’t end just because
you are now a business owner.
Design a succession plan. When
you want to retire, would you like
to keep the business in your family?
If so, you’ll need to create a
succession plan that works for you.
Build an emergency fund. Maintaining
an adequate cash flow
will always be a key task – one
that involves your sales, billing
cycles, inventory and other
elements of your business.
retiring as a Master Sergeant.
Ella Hannant is
the youngest to
make a hole-inone
on The Cradle
Ella June Hannant
didn’t need
to be told to
check the hole.
Already an accomplished golfer
at the tender age of 8 – she has
the trophies and medals to prove
it – Hannant does admit to having
two thoughts when she couldn’t
fi nd her ball Sunday on the punch
bowl green of the third hole of Pinehurst’s
short course, The Cradle.
“Well, the greens were really fast,
so I thought maybe it was in the
hole or that it might’ve rolled back
off the green,” Hannant recalls. “After
all, they are Pinehurst greens.”
Most telling is that Hannant,
of Pikeville, North Carolina,
thought to check the hole fi rst.
And even though she was playing w
ith her dad, Steve, and younger
sister, Zada, Hannant put
the pieces together on her own.
“I looked in the hole, and my
ball was there,” she said. “I just
walked up and looked for it.”
And so, with a sand wedge from 56
yards, Ella Hannant, at 8 years old,
became the youngest player to make
an ace on The Cradle. It is her fi rst
hole-in-one, and the 18th on The Cradle,
which opened in late September.
“I’ve been wanting one since
I was about 2,” Hannant says.
She has the game to have backed up
that goal. Hannant is one of the topranked
junior golfers, and she recently
won her age division at the Drive,
Chip and Putt Regional at Pinehurst.
The week before the Masters, Hannant
will compete in the Drive, Chip and Putt
Championship at Augusta National.
She’s won countless other tournaments
– she’s been competing
since she was 5 – and it was one of
those tournaments that led her to
The Cradle on Sunday. After winning
a U.S. Kids Golf tournament on Saturday
at Pinehurst No. 8, Hannant’s
tournament on Sunday in Raleigh
was canceled. Her dad gave her
the option: play one of the courses
she will have future tournaments
on, or take a shot at The Cradle,
Pinehurst’s 789-yard short course.
“The Cradle is fun.
I think it would be really fun for kids to
play a quick nine holes.” -Ella chose
The Cradle – kids 17 and under play
The Cradle free with a paying adult
– with the goal of shooting par.
And she did – an even-par 27.
“Ella keeps a goal book,” says
her mother, Regan, “and that
was her goal – to shoot par.
Of course, we didn’t think that
would include a hole-in-one.”
Ella used a total of fi ve clubs in her
round on the course, which features
holes that range in yardage
from 56 yards to 127 yards. She
used her putter, 5 iron, 7 iron, 8
iron – and that fateful sand wedge.
“The Cradle is fun,” Ella says. “I think
it would be really fun for kids to play a
quick nine holes.”
Sandhills Collision Center
Now Open In Seven Lakes
Sandhills Collision Center is now open
for business. Tim and Susie Read of
Seven Lakes recently purchased the
former Seven Lakes Body Shop and
have upgraded the facility to give
customers a pleasant and professional
experience from start to fi nish.
Tim Read
Tim Read grew up in Southern
Pines and attended Pinecrest High
School. In the years before returning,
Read owned and operated his
own body shop and trucking companies
in Florida and Arizona. Since
2014, Read’s roots became deeply
embedded in Moore County as he
returned to be near his mother, a
Whispering Pines resident and met
and married his wife, Susie. Susie,
is a Digital Learning Coach for
Montgomery County Schools. She
previously worked as a band and
orchestra director for Moore County
Schools. Together the couple have
six children and two grandchildren.
Tim is an A-Tech and certifi ed auto
body technician. He worked for a local
body shop as a technician before
managing a couple of large corporate
Body Shops. When the opportunity
to purchase Seven Lakes Body
Shop became a reality, the Reads
decided to seize the opportunity.
“I love living in Seven Lakes, and I
want to provide excellent service for
its residents,” said Read. “I have had
the opportunity to be trained in some
excellent processes. I have also had
the experience of managing large,
effi cient body shops. I bring all of
that experience into this business.”
Sandhills Collision Center has a Chief
state-of-the-art frame straightening
system with precision measuring. According
to Read, “The frame machine
enables us to handle the big hits that
can damage the integrity of a vehicle.”
The business also has a new
eco-friendly paint booth. “We have
installed a brand new paint booth
and paint system,” said Read. “We
also have experience in boat and RV
body repair. My years in Florida provided
ample opportunities to work
with fi berglass, especially on boats.
Brett Perry is the shop manager and
has been living in the Seven Lakes
area with his wife, Vivian, for nine
years. Perry has extensive experience
in all types of auto bodywork and
painting. Perry and Read met each
other while working together locally
as A-techs. They realized they shared
the same work ethic and vision of
providing professional and excellent
service. The opening of Sandhills
Collison Center provided the perfect
opportunity for the two men to bring
their visions to a reality. Together, the
two men have more than 70 years of
experience in the business. Read’s
mother, also named Susie Read,
works part-time managing the offi ce
of Sandhills Collision Center. An avid
animal lover, you will often fi nd her
Basset Hound, Banjo, by her side.
“Sandhills Collision Center wants
to be known for providing quality
work along with excellent customer
service,” said Read. “The people
in the Seven Lakes area are
our neighbors. Both Brett and I live
here. We take care of our neighbors.
We have a clean, friendly, welcoming
offi ce. We would love to have
our neighbors stop by for cup of
coffee and introduce themselves.”
The shop is located on Village
View Drive, which is the fi rst left
turn past Seven Lakes Marine.
Living an Adventure with No Regrets
Dr. Seuss writes in Oh, The Places
You’ll Go!, “You have brains in your
head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction
you choose. You’re on your own. And
you know what you know. And YOU are
the one who’ll decide where to go...”
Dan Pieroni has lived a life of adventure.
From holding the record for being
the oldest man to run 100 mile Ultra
Marathons to living alone for months
at a time on the tundra of Alaska, Dan
has made many memories and says
“at some point I will no longer be able
to do as I like to do, so I will go on as
long as I can and I have no regrets.”
Mr. Pieroni is someone who has
worked very hard in his life and has
been able to support his family, wife
and four children, retire at the age of
47 and turn in his medical license to
live a life of travel, exploration and
volunteering. Dan fi nds peace when
he is with nature. He says, “When you
are alone and away from society it is
just you and God. You have no choice
but to really fi nd yourself one with
Him and see the beauty around you.”
Mr. Pieroni is a retired Ophthalmologist.
After retiring, he moved his family
to Hilton Head, SC and then to the Seven
Lakes West Community in 1996.
He spends half of his year in Seven
Lakes West and the other half
as a resident of Alaska. While
in Seven Lakes he has been a
Guardian ad litem, representing
the voice of children of need.
He has served as a volunteer for
First Health Hospice being a friend
and gentle shoulder for those who
know the end was near. In 1997, he
found a need to create a better environment
for the aquatic life in the
lakes of Seven Lakes so he began
the Lake Auman Sportsman Club.
He provided Christmas trees around
the lakes to help cultivate the barriers
needed for fi sh to grow in number
for the residents and guests
of Seven Lakes to be able to enjoy
an additional sport alongside Golf.
While in Kodiak, Alaska Dan lives on
a modest fi shing boat named “Esqueyer”
and enjoys all the beauty
Alaska has to offer. Hiking, fi shing,
and climbing mountains are just
a few of the activities Dan enjoys.
Just before retiring Mr. Pieroni took
several corneas with him to Alaska
and performed eye transplants
for residents in need. He even has
a picture of a hand drawn horse
from a client who once was blind
but after surgery is now able to see.
Dan’s basement is a retreat in itself,
with medals, awards and gifts
from previous staff members. All
of the items precisely placed in
his home have a story, a memory
of the joy he had and continues to
have in his life. I liken Mr. Pieroni
to a modern day Forrest Gump.
Though he is extremely bright, he
is incredibly humble in all of his accomplishments
through life. He got
into medical school in three years
instead of four, started his own practice
and insisted on having one waiting
room during a time when two
separate rooms were preferred and
retired at age 47 and has been able
to continue to volunteer and give
back to his community and stay active
and healthy for all of these years.
Now 77 years old, Mr. Pieroni is unsure
of how many trips he will have left going
to live in Alaska. But one thing is
for certain, he has created a legend.
With “more behind me than in front
of me” Dan says, “I have no regrets,”
and smiles as he speaks of the many
accomplished adventures of his life.

New Year’s Resolutions
Eat Up Time
On an average day, the average
person: works for 8.8 hours,
sleeps for 7.6 hours, eats for
1.1, does stuff around the house
for 1.1, invests 1.2 hours into
their relationships and spends
1.7 hours doing “Other”. Here’s
what a typical person’s day
looks like, compared to a typical
day of mine since I’ve started A
Year of Productivity:
Hidden Costs of Making New Year’s Resolutions
For the project, I added more elements
to my life. Adding these
has a cost: time. I love working
out but on average I’m at the
gym for 1.5 hours. After I meditate
(30 minutes), invest in my
relationships (1.5 hours), I have
a total of 30 minutes left over.
It takes time and emotional labor
to switch between the elements,
so I don’t have any extra
time at all.
That’s okay, because I love what
I do, and love the challenge
of turning myself into a better
person. But shows it is important
to make resolutions for the
right reasons. New Year’s resolutions
eat up time; more than
you think.
If you already have a New Year’s
resolution, now is the time to
stop and think about:
•Whether you like the idea of
making the resolution more
than you would enjoy the results
of it.
•How much time it will cost,
compared to how much time
you have, and are willing to dedicate.
New Year’s Resolutions
Suck Up Willpower
Studies show that how much
willpower you have is not a character
trait. Willpower is a depletable
resource, and chances are
you will expend a lot keeping
your resolutions.
You start every day with a fresh
tank of willpower, but over the
day your reserve depletes. Forming
new habits can suck up a lot
of willpower.
Depleting your reserve is costly
if you don’t expend your willpower
on the right things. I think
draining your willpower is a cost
of making New Year’s resolutions
that most overlook.
Results are Often
Invisible at First
Your brain is wired to respond
to cues in your environment,
because it has grown to expect
rewards for behaviours. That’s
why you tap on the ‘Email” icon
on your phone when you see
new messages, or start walking
toward the laundry room after
the dryer sounds.
Having clear, specific rewards
for your behaviour is the key to
making new habits stick, but
with most resolutions you might
not notice results at first.
Not having clear rewards can be
discouraging and make a new
habit more difficult.
A good way to make new habits
stick: reward yourself after completing
something that doesn’t
have immediate benefits. This
helps solidify the cue-routine-reward
habit sequence in your
head and makes things easier
the next time.
Being mindful of how much
time, willpower, and motivation
your New Year’s resolutions will
cost is something that not many
do, because it’s more fun to fantasize
than to think about what
you need to do. But doing so will
help you become more realistic
about how keeping New Year’s
resolutions impact your life.

Some Angels Choose Fur
Instead Of Wings
Several artists took it upon themselves
to paint their way into the
hearts of those looking for a new
furry friend to love on. Artists painted
photos of Dogs and Cats and
hung them on the Moore County
Sheriff’s Offi ce Animal Shelter walls.
“I think it’s great” said Lieutenant
Forrest Kirk. “We greatly appreciate
the new décor at the Animal
Shelter. Its makes for a more
welcoming atmosphere hopefully
leading to more adoptions.”
Sheriff Neil Godfrey went on to say
“another great example of the importance
of relationships. The services
we provide the Citizens of Moore
County cannot be done without the
support of our communities. We are
humbled and very appreciative that
Artists’ would, unsolicited, take the
time to creatively paint dogs and cats
in such a manner that it would benefi
t all our visitors at the Moore County
Sheriff’s Offi ce Animal Shelter.”
Christmas is over — so now what
do you do with that massive Fraser
fi r that’s been decorating
your living room? Well, you could
mulch it, or just toss it in a lake.
Many residents placed their trees
curbside to be “tossed” in to the lakes
on the North and West side this year.
According to Don Smith, “This year
marked the twenty-fi rst anniversary
that volunteers from the Lake Auman
Sports Club (LASC) conducted their
fi sh habitat program by placing Christmas
trees under the docks of participating
lakefront property owners.
This annual project provides the
lake’s small fi sh with protective cover
to escape from larger predator
fi sh helping increase the lake’s fi sh
population, both in size and number.
Last year forty-eight trees were
delivered and prepped on February
10th and on the following
day, were placed under twenty-six
docks, including ten new locations.
Many homeowners, who have participated
in the past, were turned down
this year as there was no more room
under their docks for additional trees.
Christmas Tree?
Toss it in the Lake... Give it to the Fish!
Community residents needing assistance
disposing of their trees were able
to have their trees picked up and taken
to the designated tree drop area.
LASC volunteers providing that help
were Bruce Keyser, Stan Makson,
Jim Pierman and Don Smith. The
following Sports Club members delivered
the trees and prepared them
at the docks: Glenn Anderson, Ed
Cockman, Don D’Apolitto,
Charlie Flinchum,
Jim Haggard,
Mark Haut,
Tom Kallio,
Dan
Lambert,
S t a n
M a k -
son, Mike
Ozimek, Jim
Pierman, Bill Pratt,
Don Smith and Don Snell.
For the fi rst time, there were two
three-man teams, instead of only
one, working to place and secure
the trees under the docks.
Ryan Scott donned his diving wet
suit and he and Dan Pieroni spent
the day in the fi fty degree water.
Previously, Dan was the only
one in the frigid waters every year.
Working with the two of them were
Ben Benjamin, Dave Lamon, Don
Smith and Pinecrest High School
Junior Dax Ingram. The project
was organized again this
year by Don Smith.
Special
thanks
to Dan
Pieroni
for his
twenty
years
devoted
to this program,
in the water
every one of them.
Thanks to all the volunteers for
a job well done and to the lakefront
homeowners who participated
this year and in the past
to make this program possible.
Around the US, many areas collect
used or unsold Christmas
trees to recycle as fi sh habitats
At the end of the holidays, real Christmas
trees, stripped of all their ornaments,
are bundled up together
and thrown in lakes to create reefs.
These reefs give young fi sh a
place to hide from larger fi sh, provide
new nesting grounds, and
also allow for the growth of algae.
And that helps the ecosystem as
a whole: the algae feed aquatic
bugs, bugs feed little fi sh,
and little fi sh feed large fi sh.
“If you imagine a lake bottom
that has no vegetation, is really
bare, it’s kind of two dimensional.
And by putting these reefs in, you
create a kind of three dimensional
habitat for fi sh,” says Joseph Sullivan,
the fi sheries program manager
at East Bay Regional Park
District, “You’re essentially creating
a whole ecosystem there.”
“These trees are some of the best
natural forms of underwater structure.
Crappie, bass, bluegills and
other fi sh will often use the tress to
hide in and around,” according to
Chris Powell, Conservation Biologist
“Once the trees become a new home
for fi sh, it’s not long before they will
provide increased opportunities to
local anglers young and old alike to
get hooked on fi shing,” Powell said.
BATTLESHIP
BATTLESHIP RULES
Each Battleship puzzle represents an ocean with a hidden fleet of ships,
which may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid such
that no ship touches another, not even diagonally.
The numbers on the right and on the bottom of the grid show how many
squares in the corresponding row and column are occupied by ship segments.
Occasionally some squares may contain given ship or water segments
to help start the puzzle. The object is to discover where all ships
are located.
Classic Battleship puzzles come in various sizes, with different fleets for
each size. For example, the fleet of a Classic Battleship 10x10 puzzle consists
of one battleship, two cruisers, three destroyers and four submarines.
Submarines consist of a single round segment, destroyers have two end
segments, cruisers have two end segments and a middle segment, and the
battleship is constructed of two end segments and two middle segments.
Place 8 Queens so none are in each row, column or diagonal
Any remaining squares in the grid contain water segments, which are
shown as a symbol of water or as an “X”.
The Secret To Super Agers
What will you be like in your 80s?
Living independently, robust in body
and mind, with a wide social circle?
Manage that and you will be a superager.
It is a worthy aspiration, but the
reality is rather different for most of us.
Although we are living longer,
more of those extra years are
being spent in ill health, often
with multiple chronic conditions.
Of the 65 million people in the UK,
8.45 million are projected to live
to 100, according to analysis from
the Offi ce for National Statistics.
That’s around one in eight of the
population and a timely reminder
that many of us will spend
a third of our lives in old age.
Aging is a global issue - the number
of people aged 65 and older is projected
to almost triple to 1.5 billion
by 2050.
Let’s start with Irene.
She’s 84 and the fastest woman
on earth for her age. Irene has
been breaking world records in
Masters athletics for four decades.
She has the poise and physique
of someone in their prime and
makes age look like an irrelevance.
Her philosophy is simple: “A quitter
never wins, and a winner never
quits - and I want to be a winner.”
Being a winner involves grit, determination
and relentless effort.
I met Irene and her coach Alan
Kolling at Chabot College, near
San Francisco, where they train
three or four times a week.
Then there are the gym sessions,
tennis and bowling
- Irene is on the go all day.
“You gotta use it, or you lose
it,” she says with a smile.
Her only period of ill-health was
self infl icted - when she dropped
a weight on her toe in the gym.
As with all the super agers I’ve
met, Irene retains a positive attitude
- her horizons have not
narrowed as she has aged.
She is socially connected; as
well as all the people she meets
through sport, Irene volunteers
in her local community.
Aging well is about exercising
the mind as well as the body.
It’s thought that one in three cases
of dementia could be prevented
if more people looked after
their brain health throughout life.
I joined a French literature class at
the Alliance Francaise in Berkeley,
across the bay from San Francisco.
All the students were in their 70s,
and retained the same curiosity
and positive attitude which seem
to be hallmarks of super-agers.
Pamela Blair, 76, a retired psychologist,
told me: “I love the French
language and its literature. But
I’m also here to exercise my mind
- my mother had Alzheimer’s”.
Image caption The Buck Institute
for Research on Aging.
What is it that cancer, heart disease,
stroke, dementia and osteoarthritis
all have in common? The
fact that your chances of getting
any of them increase as you age.
Prof Judy Campisi, one of the lead
scientists at the Buck Institute “It’s
not a coincidence that all these
diseases occur at the same time
- we think there are basic aging
processes that cause all of them.”
Like others at the Buck Institute, Prof
Campisi is convinced that science will
be able to help us age more healthily.
She said: “We predict there will be
drugs that will treat aging, and as a
consequence we will be able to extend
health span, the years of healthy life.
“This would mean people could look
forward to the last decade of life
being vibrant and engaged - their
brains and bodies working optimally.”
Reverse Mortgage for Purchase
JIM GARRISON
YOUR SEVEN LAKES MORTGAGE SPECIALIST
Buying a home with a Reverse Mortgage or Home Equity Conversion Mortgage
(HECM) for Purchase allows seniors over the age of 62 the ability to
buy a primary residence without incurring an additional monthly payment.
With a Purchase HECM, a senior citizen can fi nance up to 40-50% of the
purchase price. The maximum loan amount is dependent on the age of
the youngest borrower. Debt-to-income ratios and credit scores are not
factored into qualifying for this loan product. Gifts are permitted, however
sellers are prohibited from paying any closing costs. Interest is compounded
on a reverse mortgage and cannot be deducted from income taxes
unless interest payments have actually been made.
www.7LakesRX.com
Once you obtain a Reverse Mortgage, there are NO requirements to sell
the home until BOTH spouses move out for 12 consecutive months. The
owner’s estate is never liable for any repayment of the loan, even if the
property sells for less than the outstanding loan balance. If the home sells
for more than the loan amount the excess proceeds are retained by the estate.
Prior to writing a purchase contract the buyers are required to attend
counseling to review the pros and cons of obtaining a reverse mortgage.
Initial loan amounts up to $679,650 are available for a HECM for Purchase.
Super Bowl LII
The fi rst Super Bowl game was
played January 15, 1967, (NFL)
champion Green Bay Packers beat
he (AFL) Kansas City Chiefs 35–
10. Just over half the seats were
fi lled in Los Angeles Memorial Stadium,
roughly 32,000 empty, for
Super Bowl I, named retroactively,
to replace the long winded AFL-NFL
World Championship Game title.
Many complained about the top
ticket prices of $12. It is amazing
how much things have changed.
According to one account, Lamar
Hunt, architect of the AFL and
owner of the Kansas City Chiefs,
came across his daughter’s “Super
Ball,” an ultra-bouncy toy that
was popular among kids in the
1960s, and was given the inspiration
for the name, “Super Bowl”
n 1967, the average cost of airing
a commercial was $40,000
during Super Bowl I, according
to Bradley Johnson of Ad Age.
Adjusted for infl ation, that fi g-
ure is $287,433.53 in 2016, per
Mean Joe Green
the United States Department
of Labor’s infl ation calculator.
The television audience
for Super Bowl I is estimated
to have been
60 million television
viewers
on two networks.
For
comparison,
Super Bowl LI
in 2017 had
just over 111
million watching
on one network.
These days, 30 seconds of televised
advertisement space during the Super
Bowl costs $5 million, according
to Sapna Maheshwari of The New York
Times, thanks in part to the meteoric
rise of the NFL’s popularity and increased
audience for the Super Bowl
(111.86 million watched Super Bowl
50, compared to 39.12 million for Super
Bowl II, per Sports Media Watch).
The question is whether companies
get proper value and return
on investment for spending $5
million for 30 seconds of air time
(that is $166,666.66 per second,
in case you were wondering).
the game, while members of the
Chiefs earned $7,500. In comparison
to 2017, every member of the winning
team pocketed $107,000, whether
the player stepped on the fi eld or not.
The losers each received $53,000.
When it comes to sports betting,
there's the Super Bowl and
then there's everything else.
The same holds true for offi ce
pools. While there may be some
interest in the World Series and
NCAA Basketball Tournament,
the Super Bowl reigns supreme
and will attract an estimated
$10 billion in all types of wagers,
ranging from the traditional
bets at various sportsbooksto
friendly wagers and offi ce pools
and everything in between.
Super Bowl Jet Flyovers
Late Night Jokes
It’s a longstanding tradition for the
U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy to perform
a fl yover before every Super
Bowl, but how much does such a
thing cost American taxpayers?
In 2015, the Super Bowl fl yover will
cost about $1.25 for every one of the
63,000 football fans in attendance at
the University of Phoenix Stadium in
Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, Feb. 1.
Put another way: The Super Bowl fl y-
over costs taxpayers about $80,000
in gas and other operational costs.
“There is a minimal expense involved
with the fl yover,” Rear Admiral
John Kirby, the Pentagon press
secretary and spokesman for the
secretary of Defense, said days before
the 2015 NFL championship
game between the New England Patriots
and the Seattle Seahawks. “I
think the whole thing, soup to nuts
for the fl yover, will cost something
in the neighborhood of $80,000.”
“Tom Brady says he wants to give
“If you want to go to the Super Bowl
in Phoenix, it will cost you a lot of
“More bad news for the New
“Seattle was down 16-0 at the half.
They came back to win in overtime.
