This is a collection that was founded before 1985, when the former head of the investment department of<br />

Gyula Meat Factory, Mr. Szigethy Attila, recognized the importance of Gyula sausage as a culinary product<br />

worthy of recognition and appreciation. The fame of Gyula sausage and the brand as we know it today would<br />

not have been possible without the hard work of our ancestors.<br />

The exhibition was opened in 1985 and materials presented here were mostly donated by craftsmen butchers<br />

of Gyula. This project was started with a very noble goal, namely, to keep and preserve the memories<br />

of better days of the meat industry of Gyula town. The exhibition remained open in an unaltered form until<br />

1998. Then, due to preservation and structural renovations, it was accessed only by groups on appointment<br />

basis.<br />

After 2007 dark days followed for the History Museum of Meat Industry. The collection was liquidated and<br />

much of the existing equipment and materials were transported to the town Békéscsaba. The rest, sadly,<br />

disappeared or were lost forever. Meanwhile, the museum building was put up for sale by the Municipality<br />

of Gyula.<br />

At its October 22nd 2007 meeting, the Town Council of Gyula, based on the proposal of deputy and lobbyist<br />

Durko Karoly, well known as a cultural counselor f the town, adopted a urgent resolution by which it<br />

was decided that the building of the old slaughterhouse would not be sold. Instead, on its premises, a new<br />

Exhibition of History of Gyula Meat Industry would be organised. The building became operational again<br />

and now hosts not only the museum but also gastronomic events dedicated to the local product: the Gyula<br />

sausage. At that time traditionalists butchers in the city Gyula declared interest and agreed to contribute to<br />

this project. On 31 st October 2007 lovers and friends of Gyula town and especially by contributing of the<br />

initiative gentlemen: Durko Karoly, Balla Tibor and Szalai George, the full collection of the old meat industry<br />

museum was transported from Békéscsaba and was returned to Gyula. It was then temporarily placed in the<br />

Corvin Janos Museum.<br />
