Gyula Kolbász Museum
Gyula
This is a collection that was founded before 1985, when the former head of the investment department of
Gyula Meat Factory, Mr. Szigethy Attila, recognized the importance of Gyula sausage as a culinary product
worthy of recognition and appreciation. The fame of Gyula sausage and the brand as we know it today would
not have been possible without the hard work of our ancestors.
The exhibition was opened in 1985 and materials presented here were mostly donated by craftsmen butchers
of Gyula. This project was started with a very noble goal, namely, to keep and preserve the memories
of better days of the meat industry of Gyula town. The exhibition remained open in an unaltered form until
1998. Then, due to preservation and structural renovations, it was accessed only by groups on appointment
basis.
After 2007 dark days followed for the History Museum of Meat Industry. The collection was liquidated and
much of the existing equipment and materials were transported to the town Békéscsaba. The rest, sadly,
disappeared or were lost forever. Meanwhile, the museum building was put up for sale by the Municipality
of Gyula.
At its October 22nd 2007 meeting, the Town Council of Gyula, based on the proposal of deputy and lobbyist
Durko Karoly, well known as a cultural counselor f the town, adopted a urgent resolution by which it
was decided that the building of the old slaughterhouse would not be sold. Instead, on its premises, a new
Exhibition of History of Gyula Meat Industry would be organised. The building became operational again
and now hosts not only the museum but also gastronomic events dedicated to the local product: the Gyula
sausage. At that time traditionalists butchers in the city Gyula declared interest and agreed to contribute to
this project. On 31 st October 2007 lovers and friends of Gyula town and especially by contributing of the
initiative gentlemen: Durko Karoly, Balla Tibor and Szalai George, the full collection of the old meat industry
museum was transported from Békéscsaba and was returned to Gyula. It was then temporarily placed in the
Corvin Janos Museum.
