Day 3 – Wednesday
SUMMER
Gyula, a historic spa town with many open exhibitions, is inviting its guests during the first half of the third
day to visit two of the most prestigious venues. In the Gyula Castle, „history will take you by hand” - in the
only remaining flat Gothic brick building of the former Hungarian Kingdom, 24 exhibition halls show how
the prison of the castle, the baker’s shop, the dispensary, the blacksmith’s and the potter’s yard looked like.
Guests can find out how the castellan and the chatelaine lived, how different the office of the Turkish leader
was in comparison with the Hungarian one or what weapons they fought in the past centuries. Following
the visit of the castle, our guests are invited to view our town’s most recent and extraordinary exhibition,
aligned also to the highest European standards, the site of the Visitor Information Centre of Almásy Castle.
“Storyteller Castle” - Almásy Castle offers with the help of the 21st -century interactive technology an experience
of discovery. In the wonderfully restored mansion, our guests can not only get to know the lives of
the noblemen, but they also find out who lit a fire in the fireplaces, how many liters of water were consumed
on a single day, who washed and ironed the countess’s lingerie, what was on the staff’s agenda, which was
their daily tasks – and after all, where and how did the servants live? How was to be a servant in those times?
How did it feel to put your entire life in the service of a noble family and by being invisible make their life
more comfortable? All important information regarding entrance and guided tours can be found at www.
gyulavara.hu and www.gyulaikastely.hu
In the second half of the day, we will show you the gastronomic offers of the region, for which also the best
means of transportation will be the bicycles available at the Tourinform office in Gyula. During the visit of
the Gyula Schnapps Manufactory, visitors can find out the secret of our local schnapps. While adults taste
some of the distinctive features of the schnapps made in Gyula, children can enjoy a glass of home-made
local elderberry juice. The next stop of the gastronomic tour is the Gyulai Sausage Museum (formerly known
as the Meat Industry Historical Exhibition), where traditional homemade sausages can be sampled by the
traditional butchers of Gyula. The Gyulai Sausage: an original Hungaricum and if it is meant as a souvenir, it
is clear what to bring home: Gyula sausage from Gyula! As a continuation of the tour, a visit to the Gyulahús
LLC shop is included in the program, where the participants can buy the best gift from our town, and in the
store for a purchase of over 2.500 HUF, everyone has a gift!
If you are going for a longer trip, you can visit the Békés Schnapps Centrum, in addition to the Gyula gastronomic
boulevard. It is worthwhile to take the Gyula - Szanazug - Dobozi Bridge - Double-Körös dam -
Békés-Dánfok - Békés route back and forth in a 40 km bike ride, so the participants can enjoy the beauties
of nature of the Körös countryside. This evening, after dinner, you can choose from a vast range of cultural
programs in the area: Gyula Castle Theatre, City Hall Evening, Csaba Summer Festival and Békés-Tarhos Music
Days.
As a closure for the evening program, it is worth ending this wonderful day with a town sightseeing or
downtown walk with an ice-cream in your hand, a visit to the Kossuth Street Handicrafts Fair, but of course,
you can also opt for a tour with a carriage-bike or have fun by the giant slide.
