Epping Scouts launch
appeal for new boatshed
The Epping Scout Group launched an appeal to raise up to half a
million dollars to build a new boad shed and wharf at Meadowbank.
The new facility will
replace the existing
boatshed and wharf
which is too small
to meet the scout
group’s needs and
has suffered damage
and deterioration
to the wharf, next to
Meadowbank ferry
terminus.
The new facility
will also be used
for teaching scouts
boating and water
safety.
Epping Scout
Group’s Michael
Mannasz told The
Weekly Times a Go-
FundMe page has
been set up and the
scouts will seek financial
support from
local MPs.
“Our group have
had a boatshed in
Meadowbank since
1939, which is used
for sailing and canoeing
activities by local
scouts,” he said.
“The current building
dates from 1977
and is in need of renewal.
“Our group is seeking
community and
government assistance
with the extensive
costs of updating
and redeveloping
the boatshed, so that
it can continue to be
used for education
and recreation by local
scouts.”
“Costs for designs
and approvals for
the development will
fall due in late 2017
to early 2018, with
Stage 1 of construction
expected to
commence in 2018.”
Mr Mannasz said
that - having introduced
a Sea Scout
Section in 1934 - the
Group was fortunate
to obtain in 1939
a boatshed site at
Meadowbank, when
AWA handed over
their jetty, previously
used for transport to
the Homebush transmitter
site.
“The original shed
was built under wartime
restrictions, rebuilt
in the 1950s,
and finally replaced
with the present brick
structure in 1977.
“Boating activities
have been a feature
of the Group’s program,
although the
Sea Scout section
was merged with
the General Troop in
1987 to consolidate
training.”
The 1st Epping
Scout Group was
formed in July 1915
by Mr Bill Hunt, a
local Plumber, only
eight years after
the Movement was
founded by Lord
Baden Powell at
Brownsea Island in
England.
“t has operated
continuously since
that date, and is one
of the oldest Scout
Groups in Australia
to have done so but
is now just called
Epping Scouts,” Mr
Mannasz said.
“Having introduced
a Sea Scout Section
in 1934, the Group
was fortunate to obtain
in 1939 a boatshed
site at Meadowbank,
when AWA
handed over their
jetty, previously used
for transport to the
Homebush transmitter
site.
“The original shed
was built under wartime
restrictions, rebuilt
in the 1950s,
and finally replaced
with the present
brick structure in
1977. Boating activities
have been a feature
of the Group’s
program, although
the Sea Scout section
was merged with
the General Troop in
1987 to consolidate
training.”
It is all smiles in Meadowbak this week as Epping Scout Group’s Group Leader Brendan Buckley launches the
appeal at the boatshed alongside scout Brendan Mannasz. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
