THIS WEEK we invite you to Have YOUR Say on the issue of
Australia Day and the day it should be observed as our National
Day.
THE WEEKLY TIMES SPECIAL INQUIRY
Every January in recent times the matter of January 26 as Australia Day
has been raised by various individuals and groups expressing their concerns
for the appropriateness of the date as our national day of celebration.
Originally January 26 was known as Anniversary Day celebrating the arrival of the First
Fleet under the leadership of the first Governor Captain Arthur Phillip at Sydney Cove in
1788 and the planting of the Union Jack on the soil of what was to become Sydney town.
Australia Day should be a day when ALL AUSTRALIANS can
celebrate together and be thankful for all the benefits we have
received living in “the Best country in the world”. We should be
proud of our past and thank those who have come before us
and provided a magnificent inheritance for us all to enjoy.

This was the foundation of what we now
know as the Commonwealth of Australia
with the common language of English, like
it or not, but that is the reality of it all.
A few months later we may have all been
speaking French, or Dutch, or Portuguese.
Or in more recent times Japanese.
Proponents of changing the date have
never been able to come up with an appropriate
or better date to commemorate
and celebrate. Until they do they are simply
flapping in the air.
The latest protagonist is the Greens national
leader Dr Richard Di Natale who obviously
believes this is more important than
the thousands of citizens who are having
their electricity turned off because they
can’t afford the exorbitant electricity bills
the mad greens policy dictates.
He claims “it’s time we stop papering over

live in Oz up Canberra
way.

now of Bankstown
also celebrate their
wedding anniversary
Sunday, their 40th,
thanks to, or in spite
of, JB introducing them
and being Godfather of
their wedding in Manila
The Philippines
and later Godfather of
their children Rosalina
Mary (Rosemary
Superstar) and David
John. Rosemary
is currently an English
teacher in Shanghai
China and she has
shouted her parents a
lovers weekend at the
fabulous Hydro Majestic
Hotel, Medlow Bath
in the Blue Mountains.

first elected to Ryde

Town Planning Committee

Dr Di Natale should visit some of the
