AUSTRALIA DAY:
Have YOUR Say!
The Weekly Times invites readers to Have YOUR Say! on
January 26 – YES or NO
the issues you believe to be important today and for the days
ahead.
THIS WEEK we invite you to Have YOUR Say on the issue of
Australia Day and the day it should be observed as our National
Day.
THE WEEKLY TIMES SPECIAL INQUIRY
Every January in recent times the matter of January 26 as Australia Day
has been raised by various individuals and groups expressing their concerns
for the appropriateness of the date as our national day of celebration.
Originally January 26 was known as Anniversary Day celebrating the arrival of the First
Fleet under the leadership of the first Governor Captain Arthur Phillip at Sydney Cove in
1788 and the planting of the Union Jack on the soil of what was to become Sydney town.
Australia Day should be a day when ALL AUSTRALIANS can
celebrate together and be thankful for all the benefits we have
received living in “the Best country in the world”. We should be
proud of our past and thank those who have come before us
and provided a magnificent inheritance for us all to enjoy.
Have YOUR Say on Facebook, twitter, our website www.
weeklytimes.com.au, email: contactus@weeklytimes.com.au
(use #AustraliaDay) or good old fashioned snail mail at TWT,
PO Box 123 Ryde NSW 1680.
This was the foundation of what we now
know as the Commonwealth of Australia
with the common language of English, like
it or not, but that is the reality of it all.
A few months later we may have all been
speaking French, or Dutch, or Portuguese.
Or in more recent times Japanese.
Proponents of changing the date have
never been able to come up with an appropriate
or better date to commemorate
and celebrate. Until they do they are simply
flapping in the air.
The latest protagonist is the Greens national
leader Dr Richard Di Natale who obviously
believes this is more important than
the thousands of citizens who are having
their electricity turned off because they
can’t afford the exorbitant electricity bills
the mad greens policy dictates.
He claims “it’s time we stop papering over
JB’s World
NEITA MAT-
THEWS OAM heads
This Week’s Birthday
Honours List facing 84
candles on her birthday
cake on Sunday
with greetings from her
three sons Peter, Greg
and Ian who is currently
resident in USA.
Neita was Ryde Citizen
of the Year 2008 and
shares the distinction
with Greg OBE of being
the only mother
and son who have been
elected to their respective
Sports Hall of
Fame, Greg naturally
for cricket and Neita
equally for Netball as
Patron of Netball NSW.
January 21 is also special
in the Booth family
as the 61st wedding anniversary
of JB’s elder
twin brother Dr Peter
Arthur Booth and
Margaret Quain Nicholson
Barnier who
were wed at Eastwood’s
St Phillip’s Church and
have resided ever since
following their honeymoon
trip in Pommieland
and with three
beautiful daughters
Debbie, Bregitta and
Amber and families.
Although Debbie with
her hubby Graham and
daughters Eva and Zoe
saw the light and now
live in Oz up Canberra
way.
Peter and Ely Menton
wedding anniversary
of, JB introducing them
and being Godfather of
their wedding in Manila
The Philippines
and later Godfather of
their children Rosalina
Mary (Rosemary
Superstar) and David
John. Rosemary
teacher in Shanghai
China and she has
shouted her parents a
lovers weekend at the
fabulous Hydro Majestic
Hotel, Medlow Bath
in the Blue Mountains.
Hydro Majestic Hotel
holds special memories
for JB too coz when
first elected to Ryde
Council in 1959 and
elected chairman of the
Town Planning Committee
I decided we
would go to the Hydro
for a week to prepare
an issue that for 200 years has been so divisive
and painful” referring to Australia’s
indigenous population.
Dr Di Natale should visit some of the
thousands of Aussie families that are being
forced back to the dark ages papering over
for heating in the winter time and for cooling
in the summer time with no electricity.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions
dear Doctor.
All Australians have come from across the
seas at some time or another, even including
our Aboriginal elders when the land
masses moved some thousands of years
ago as we broke off from the Asian mainland.
However, enough from us.
What do YOU think?
Please Have YOUR Say! And please do
it today.
the original Town Plan
which included revolutionary
planning a new
university on what was
then Green Belt land at
North Ryde. Hence today
we have a thriving
Macquarie University
and Macquarie Park
Industrial Park thanks
to the co-operation of
my three fellow committee
members. And
despite the efforts of
successive Councils
to dismantle the plan.
Especially mayor Bill
Harrison.
