Athletes battled the heat in Corsair <strong>Bay</strong><br />
COMPETITORS battled with<br />
temperatures in excess of 30 deg<br />
C in Sunday’s Corsair <strong>Bay</strong> Classic<br />
Triathlon.<br />
More than 100 athletes, ranging<br />
from seven through to 70-yearsold,<br />
took part in the event which<br />
began with an 8.30am swim.<br />
The event hosted three categories.<br />
The children’s aquathon,<br />
which was contested between seven<br />
to 10-year-olds and consisted<br />
of a short swim and run. The<br />
short course triathlon/duathlon,<br />
which included a 500m swim or<br />
1.7km run, a 13km cycle to the<br />
bottom of Dyers Pass Rd and<br />
back, and a 3.3km run. And the<br />
Olympic distance triathlon/duathlon,<br />
which featured a 1500m<br />
swim in Corsair <strong>Bay</strong> or 5km run,<br />
40km bike to Orton Bradley Park<br />
and back, and a 10km run.<br />
Many of Canterbury’s top triathletes<br />
used the event as a final<br />
test before next weekend’s Challenge<br />
Wanaka Triathlon Festival.<br />
Thomas Newsom was first<br />
home in the boys’ aquathon with<br />
Charlotte Chiles first in the girls.<br />
A pair of teenagers were first<br />
home in the short course triathlon.<br />
Reece Rush won the male<br />
event in a time of 49m 35s. The<br />
first female home was Rosa Blake<br />
in 56m 1.9s. The men’s short<br />
course duathlon was won by<br />
Alasdair Hood (49m 56.3s) and<br />
Amber Lawson (58m 36s) won<br />
the women’s race.<br />
The Olympic distance triathlon<br />
titles went to Tyrone Hellyer,<br />
who won the men’s in a time of<br />
2h 14m 20.2s and Fiona Crombie<br />
in 2h 24m 12.5s. The Olympic<br />
distance duathlon titles went to<br />
husband and wife combo David<br />
and Katherine Fitch. David won<br />
the men’s event in a time of 2h<br />
22m 39.3s and Katherine the<br />
women’s in 2h 53m 43.7s.<br />
