Whiteside aims to keep
his lead in surf series

Whiteside is hoping to hold on to
top spot in the Billabong Grom
Series this weekend.
Whiteside, 19, will compete in
the second round of the series at
Piha on Saturday and Sunday.
The Canterbury University
student secured the lead in the
series when he bounced back
from a tough start in Whangamata
earlier this month.
Whiteside had a bad start in
the first round of the series as he
struggled to ride the right wave.
However, he persevered and
found the perfect wave and
managed to capitalise on it to
perform an air reverse that
secured him 9.17 points to bring
him up to the series-leading total
of 14.47.
“It feels pretty good . . . I was
just trying to find an air section
toward the end of the heat because
I knew I needed a big score
to win,” Whiteside said.
Whiteside said in each heat the
surfers have the option to ride
12 waves and take their two best
scores from the surf.
In spite of his rough start, the
conditions were similar to those
he surfs in Christchurch, which
was good, as he has been surfing
them for almost nine years.

Whiteside said he faces tough
opponents in the series and it
will be no easy feat to retain his
spot in the next round. But he is
looking forward to the challenge.
Whiteside is only two points
ahead of Taranaki surfer Daniel
Furr, who is on his tail heading
into the second round.
If he can continue the momentum,
Whiteside will be aiming
to keep his lead for the final title
surf in Mt Maunganui on March
11 and 12.

Sumner captain Dan Vann his
best day in club cricket yet.
Vann ripped through Lancaster
Park’s batting order at St
Leonards Park with his in swingers
to bag himself five for 47 off
15.2 overs.
The Sumner senior A side took
advantage of a green pitch and
overcast conditions to dominate
Lancaster Park in the first day
of their two-day match on Saturday.
Vann said he just hit the right
line and length on the grassy
pitch and was backed up well by
the other bowlers. He then took
the attack to the bowlers scoring
111 off 74 deliveries.
At the end of the first day,
Lancaster Park trailed by 118
runs with nine wickets left in
their second innings. However,
the second day was postponed
until next Saturday due to bad
weather.
Sumner won the toss and
chose to bowl first on the St
Leonard’s pitch and dismissed
Lancaster Park for 140 in the
49th over. Vann was supported
well by Jonathan Percasky who

wickets for 15 runs off 10 overs.
Vann, who is Sumner’s captain,
followed his five wickets
up with a quick century to put
Sumner in charge, declaring on
268/8. Chris Wilson was the only
other Sumner batsman to show
form as he hit 53 from 47 balls.
Sumner had 20 minutes on the
clock to bowl against the Lancaster
Park openers and Johnny
Beverage came through as he
picked up the wicket of Eddie
Templeton in the fourth over.
Lancaster Park ended the day
on 10 runs for one wicket, trailing
by 118 runs.
