Tech experts win with robots<br />
SCHOOLS<br />

THREE SCHOOLS in the bay<br />
area have won top prizes at the<br />
Christchurch regional RoboCup<br />
junior competition recently.<br />
An all-girl team from<br />
Diamond <strong>Harbour</strong> School took<br />
out the theatre section. Year 6<br />
and 7 pupils Abby Laird, Molly<br />
Morgan, Anna Hornsby, Poppy<br />
Kirkwood and Fern Wilkinson<br />
won with their Lego Mindstorms<br />
robots.<br />
The machines were<br />
programmed to navigate the<br />
stage following ultrasonic sensors<br />
and bluetooth communication<br />
between the two robots.<br />
Anna said it was an “amazing”<br />
experience to be able to showcase<br />
what they had learned about<br />
robotics.<br />
A team from Lyttelton Primary<br />
School won the rescue section.<br />
The ‘Lyttel Potatoes’ team of<br />
Tomasina, Jamie, Kayden and<br />
Georgia will go to the national<br />
competition in Dunedin in<br />

Reflectivate rocks Bandquest<br />
GROOVE: Diamond <strong>Harbour</strong> School rock band Reflectivate<br />
came second in their heat at the Bandquest competition for<br />
intermediate-aged musicians. Abby Laird, Tane Payne, Flora<br />
Dean, James Rice, Anna Clinch, Ruby Osborne, Ike Dukie and<br />
Darcy McMillan performed Nina Simone’s Feeling Good and<br />
an original composition Bad Blues, written by Anna and Abby.<br />
Double bass player Flora was named best bassist.<br />
