Shuttle idea to link
• By Sarla Donovan
Dominic
A SHUTTLE linking Diamond
Harbour and Church Bay for
ferry users could be running by
late January
Student Dominic van Uden
from Diamond Harbour is
behind the idea and he has met
with Environment Canterbury
to get the idea of the ground
Funding will be critical to it
happening.
Dominic has
regular user of
the ferry since
shifting to the
area five years
ago.
A shuttle service
would alleviate
the pressure
on parking
van Uden
spaces around the wharf, he
said, provide a transport option
during inclement weather and
make it easier for the elderly
and those with young children
to use the ferry service.
He has formulated a potential
route the service could take and
surveyed the community to
establish support for the idea.
More than 60 households
responded to the survey, with
about two-thirds of respondents
suggesting they would be likely
to use the service if it were in
place.
Dominic met with ECan last
week to discuss funding options
for a van and the process of
setting up a community trust.
“Once we organise funding
for the project, it will almost
be ready to be operational.
Our aim is to have the service
Diamond Harbour and Church Bay
INITIATIVE: Diamond Harbour resident Dominic van Uden is trying to organise a shuttle
service for ferry users.
running by late January when
regular commuters return
from holiday, however this will
depend on funding,” he said.
“We have strong community
partnerships with the Diamond
Harbour Community
Association and Black Cat
Cruises.”
He has also written to the
Banks Peninsula Community
Board asking for their support
for the shuttle project.
The board discussed the
project at a meeting on Monday
and agreed to give their support
to the project, but there was no
discussion on what form that
support would take.
a shuttle service make the
ferry more accessible? Do
you think there is a need?
Draft management plans for the
Te Oka and Misty Peaks reserves
of January after the city council
pushed back the original November
timeframe. It now expects the
plans to be presented to the Banks
Peninsula Community Board
for approval in early February,
after which they will go out for
