to manage with limited water 

supplies this summer, in spite of 

scorching temperatures. 

The Banks Peninsula 

Community Board last week 

had a briefing from Fire and 

Emergency New Zealand’s 

principal rural fire officer Darrin 

Woods on how FENZ will work in 

rural areas. 

The meeting was originally 

scheduled for February this year 

but that was overtaken by the Port 

Hills fire. 

Board member Tori Peden 

said she had been hoping for 

more specifics to come out of the 

meeting. 

“I expressed concerns about 

access to water in the Little River/ 

Birdlings Flat area and was told 

things were in the pipeline, it was 

just a waiting game.”

this summer after the city 

council took back an almost new 

water tanker when FENZ was 

created, swapping it for a smaller, 

slower vehicle.

Sneaky bid to deter freedom campers

camper vans 

won’t park up 


PEOPLE AGAINST freedom 

camping are taking the law into 

their own hands in a sneaky bid 

to thwart them from staying 

over night. 

Akaroa Police Senior 

Constable Anita Osborne said 

not all residents welcomed 

freedom campers to the area 

and some felt very strongly 

about the issue. 

But fully self-contained 

camper vans are legally able to 

park for two nights in threequarters 

of the streets around 

the area and people needed to 

find better ways to communicate 

their feelings than stealing signs, 

she said. 

Freedom camping signs in 

Akaroa Heritage Park and 

Ellangowan Reserve near 

Hickory Bay were targeted last 

Wednesday. 

One was stolen and another 

damaged. The signs show where 

and for how long self-contained 

camper vans can legally park. 

The vandalism follows an 

earlier incident last Monday 

on Banks Peninsula.

Ave, Akaroa. 

Those signs were left on the 

Akaroa Police Station doorstep 

after Senior Constable Osborne 

used social media to call for 

their return. 

“I’m trying to drum in that

Her advice: “If you want to 

protest make a sign and stand 

on a corner. Or complain to the 

city council, and take part in 

community meetings and have 

some input. Be lawful. Because 

otherwise, you may end up at 

court.” 

She said larger vans weren’t a 

problem but some of the smaller 

ones, where the toilet was 

located beneath the mattress, 

weren’t very practical. 

She said people travelling in 

smaller vans often used public 

toilets instead, because it was 

difficult to access the toilet if a 

bed was on top. 

Rules around which vehicles 

qualified as ‘self-contained’ were 

tightened earlier this year after a 

review of the national standard 

for self containment of motor 

caravans and caravans. 

Motor Caravan Association 

national policy planning 

manager James Imlach said 

the tightening was in response 

to vehicles which complied 

with the technical wording of 

the standard – to have a toilet 

on-board – but not the intent, 

which was for people to use the 

toilet inside the vehicle. 

Under the new standard, a 

person must be able to use the 

toilet within the vehicle, even 

when the bed is made up. 

Mr Imlach said there were 

some vehicles on the road which 

were certified under the old 

standard (certification is given 

for four years) but they currently 

make up less than one per cent 

of motor homes registered in 

New Zealand.

cameras in Sumner has so far 

attracted $2215 from 35 donors. 

The group behind the cameras, 

Safer Sumner, was formed last 

month after a spate of aggravated 

burglaries in the area, including 

an armed intruder who was 

confronted by Emely van Ras 

in her Scarborough home. Safer 

Sumner wants to raise $4000 to 

install two cameras in the village.

SCOTT PARK PROGRESS 

A landscape architect has been 

appointed to remedy issues with 

the layout and design of Scott 

Park, Ferrymead. The park has 

been criticised for its lack of 

public access to the foreshore

the architect which will go to a 

working party for discussion. 

CRUISE SHIP LEVY 

The Akaroa Civic Trust wants a 

$5 levy on cruise ship passengers 

who come onshore, to help fund 

the Akaroa health hub. The 

trust has raised the idea with the 

Banks Peninsula Community 

Board.

Well known teacher faces another

Chris Todd has just retired after teaching for 31 years at Christchurch 

Boys’ High School. The Sumner resident also has terminal cancer – 

shattering to most, Toddy, as she is affectionately known, is taking it in her 

stride. Julia Evans reports 

CHRIS TODD knew she had 

cancer before her doctor said the 

word. 

The Christchurch Boys’ High 

School maths and athletics 

teacher, known as Toddy, figured 

it out after being sent for blood 

tests and CT scans. From the 

stomach down, then from the 

neck down, then just in her liver. 

“I didn’t drink, I wasn’t 

overweight. There shouldn’t 

have been anything wrong,” she 

said. 

She was referred to an 

oncologist. 

“A little voice in my head said 

something wasn’t right . . . I 

hadn’t been told it was cancer 

but I was seeing an oncologist. I 

knew by that stage,” she said. 

It was on April 10, 2014, when 

her doctor finally said she had a 

gastrointestinal neuroendocrine 

tumour. 

“I said, yeah, alright. I know 

. . . the doctor said start working 

on your bucket list.” 

She was told it had spread and 

she was terminal. There are 27 

tumours in her liver – she calls 

them The Fockers. 

The cancer is inoperable, 

it’s the same kind that Apple 

founder Steve Jobs died of in 

2011. 

“When I was told it was a 

rare form of cancer I said good. 

I wouldn’t want the garden 

variety,” Miss Todd said. “I 

went and told my friends, it is 

cancer but it’s no big deal. I can 

still remember the look on their 

faces.” 

She said she feels blessed that 

they can’t be operated on. “In my 

opinion, the less you’re cut open, 

the better.” 

Miss Todd has now retired 

after 31 years at CBHS, teaching 

maths and a time as head of 

sport. 

She said it was a difficult 

decision to make as the school 

had been her life since 1986. But 

she won’t really be leaving. 

“I’ve set up in my will for my 

money to go into a scholarship 

for boys’ high runners,” she 

said. 

Miss Todd’s entire estate will 

go towards helping athletic and 

multi-sport students attend 

events they might not otherwise 

afford, following her death. 

But since her diagnosis, the 

active Sumner resident has been 

doing everything in her power to 

finish her bucket list. 

Which has included several 

trips to cycle the Alpes d’Huez 

section of the Tour de France. 

Her oncologist said she would 

feel better just having coffee with 

her friends at home. But instead 

of heeding the advice, Miss Todd 

made it her mission. 

“I sent a photo of me at the top 

of the Alpes d’Huez. It’s in the 

waiting room of the clinic now,” 

she said. 

And she’s got plans to go back 

next year. “Hopefully, I’ll die 

coming off my bike on a hill in 

France.” 

Cycling is a relatively new thing 

for Miss Todd, she had competed 

solely as a runner until 2008 

when she started riding.

“Someone said don’t give 

Toddy a bike, she only knows 

how to run. It’s a bad idea to tell 

me I can’t do something.” 

A year later in 2009 she was 

competing in the World Duathalon 

Championships in Concord, 

California. Then again the following 

year in Edinburgh, Scotland, 

and a further year in Gijon, 

Spain, where she came fourth in 

her age group. 

Even now she cycles for 

several hours a day on her 

stationary bicycle: “To spite The 

Fockers.” 

But Miss Todd’s first passion 

has always been running. 

She used to go on a two-hour 

run through the Port Hills every 

morning before cycling to CBHS 

via Governors Bay and the Sign 

of the Kiwi. The running stopped, 

not because of the cancer, but a 

botched hip replacement which 

she said was “harder to come to 

terms with than The Fockers.” 

“I’m a bit of a street fighter . . . 

if I’m told I can’t do something, 

I’ll do it . . . the cancer became 

another challenge,” Miss Todd 

said. 

More than $50,000 was raised 

for Miss Todd to be able to have 

radiation treatment in Melbourne, 

not funded through the 

New Zealand health system.

enough.” 

But Miss Todd wrote a PhDlike 

essay on all of the reasons she 

was suitable for the treatment. A 

month later she was having the 

first round. 

“I say to people it’s a bit like 

earthquake repairs. You’ve got to 

manage it yourself,” she said. 

The treatment stunted The 

Fockers’ growth, she said. The 

tumours haven’t grown in more 

than two years. 

Although Miss Todd said she’s 

fully aware they will “rear their 

heads again.” When they do, she’s 

going to have a massive party. 

“Terminal cancer really 

changes your attitude to life. The 

little things bother you less.” 

Until then she still has a few 

things to tick off that bucket list 

she was told to start: “I want to 

still be alive to ride the Sumner 

Rd again.”

Surf advocate 

drops appeal 

against port 

THE SURFBREAK Protection 

Society has withdrawn its 

appeal against the Lyttelton Port 

Company’s plan to extend the 

harbour shipping channel. 

LPC has been granted resource 

consent to extend the existing 

channel, but SPS appealed 

the consent over concerns about 

local surf breaks. 

SPS spokesman Michael Gunson 

said yesterday it had resolved 

its concerns after LPC agreed to 

additional protective measures. 

These included the establishment 

of a surfing liaison group, 

regular surf reviews and a dedicated 

web-based camera system 

to monitor the Taylors Mistake 

surf break. The monitoring will 

be based on a system implemented 

by the Port of Otago.

Ngai Tahu Fisheries have also 

lodged appeals against the 

consent.

“Our house fell down so we 

were managing that at the same 

time as the rebuild of the centre, 

as well as looking after my 

mother and my in-laws who all 

had Alzheimer’s disease.” 

Taking a key role in fundraising, 

council liaison and as chairman, 

Mr McCullough helped 

oversee the transformation of the 

centre from a 1950s community 

hall to a modern, light and airy 

community centre which is oriented 

to look over the estuary. 

It’s a now a busy place, with up 

to 50 groups and classes using 

the spaces each week, as well as a 

dedicated cafe. 

Friends of Akaroa Museum 

was awarded for their ongoing 

support of Akaroa Museum and 

commitment to preserving the 

past and sharing the stories of 

Banks Peninsula’s history. 

Chairman David Miller said it 

was “gratifying” to be recognised 

by the city council. 

The group had taken on an 

advocacy role after earthquake 

damage caused the museum’s 

closure in 2012. 

“We’ve been pushing (the city 

council) hard on the rejuvenation 

so this is a tremendous 

acknowledgement of the friends’ 

work with them and the museum 

trust board.”

important because they reflected 

the local area and its history in 

a way that large museums can’t, 

said Dr Miller.

many former Akaroa residents. 

It houses items of local and national 

significance, reflects what’s 

been going on in the area for the 

last 200 years and is beloved by 

the community because it’s for 

the community.” 

Paying tribute to the award 

recipients, Ms Dalziel said their 

selflessness and generosity had 

not gone unnoticed and the city 

was grateful for their contribution. 

“It is the people in your community 

who want to see you 

or your organisation honoured 

in this way. The award is but a 

small token of the appreciation 

we have for the work you have 

done. People like you make our 

city and Banks Peninsula what 

they are. And you make us all 

proud.’’

carry water to fires. 

Mr Woods has confirmed a 

new tanker has been commissioned, 

but it won’t be ready until 

after the summer, as it needs to 

be purpose built. 

It will be four-wheel-drive and 

have up to 4000 litres capacity. 

The current tanker only takes 

about 2200 litres, Ms Peden said. 

“He didn’t really tell us much. I 

asked about where private water 

tanks were located on the peninsula, 

but he didn’t have a map of 

where they are.” 

She said it looked like the

TWO LARGE trees on the 

former Redcliffs School site 

could be in for the chop. 

City councillors voted in 

September to approve the sale of 

Redcliffs Park, Beachville Rd, to 

the Ministry of Education so the 

school could be built there. 

The former Redcliffs School 

site on Main Rd will be transferred 

to the city council to 

become a park. The Ministry will 

remove the current buildings. 

But the Redcliffs Residents 

Association is worried the trees 

– an oak and an elm – could be 

cut down at the same time as the 

buildings are removed. 

It asked the city council if 

the trees could be placed on the 

significant and notable trees 

register. 

But they were told the trees 

can’t be added because the register 

is full. 

Head of parks Brent Smith said 

there was “no intention at this 

stage” to add any more trees to 

the schedule of significant trees 

before the next District Plan 

review. 

That’s not likely to be for another 

10 years as the city has just 

completed a full review. 

He said that once the school 

grounds come under the control 

of the city council, a resource

consent would be required to 

remove any trees over 10m. 

And during the demolition 

phase, the city council would ask 

for measures to protect “particular 

trees” but would not say if 

that would include the oak and 

the elm. 

Association secretary Pat McIntosh 

said she had seen one city 

council plan which suggested the 

trees would be cleared for playing 

fields. 

But Mr Smith said a detailed 

landscape plan for the site has 

not been developed yet. 

“There are a number of 


configurations of the sports fields 

that will fit in the space available 

and a number of them include 

retaining the large oak and 

elm in the centre of the school 

grounds.” 

Dr McIntosh said she wasn’t 

certain of the trees’ age but they 

“looked to be” around 60 years 

old. 

“We remain concerned about 

their future,” she said.

MATURE pohutukawa, 

cabbage and lacebark trees 

were chopped up and have 

been left lying on the ground 

at a property on Sumner’s 

Esplanade. 

Nikki and Ron Twine’s 

110-year-old earthquakedamaged 

house was demolished 

more than two years ago, but 

contractors were careful to leave 

some of the mature trees on 

the section, including the three 

growing next to a boundary 

fence. 

The couple – who are living 

in Redcliffs while waiting to rebuild 

on the site – were shocked 

last week to discover someone 

had trespassed onto the property 

and cut down the three 

trees, as well as an established 

potato vine. 

The Twines had lived at the 

address for 21 years and the 

trees were 5-6m high and at 

least 20 years old. 

Trunks and branches were left 

lying on the ground. 

It was not until neighbours 

complained to the city council 

about the fire risk that they discovered 

what had happened.

gut-wrenching” to see the damage 

as trees like that took a long 

time to grow. 

They have notified the police 

and the city council. 

Police have said they can issue

But Mrs Twine said she didn’t 

have any evidence and didn’t 

want to prosecute. 

“I just want people to have a 

conscience and think about how 

this might feel for us.” 

She said she didn’t know why 

people would want to cut the 

trees down, as they didn’t block 

views.

council is investigating the

practice and its use in other

determine if it is viable in this

A hui was held with Ngai 

Tahu to discuss the idea last 

month and the city council is 

currently awaiting feedback 

from that. 

A final decision on which 

option to implement will be 

made in November after further 

consultation midway through 

next year.

Heathcote tunnel portal to the 

pump station in Woolston, is not

Collins. 

He was unsure if there would 

be any extra cost to the project as 

a result of the delay in getting the 

wastewater pipe. 

The rest of the project was 

proceeding “largely as planned”, 

he said.

CHRISTMAS started early for 

Ferrymead Rotary – during 

August shoe boxes were filled 

with clothing, school equipment, 

toys, special things to love and 

personal hygiene items. 

These were given to Samaritan’s 

Purse which distributes the 

boxes to children in six countries 

– Fiji, Papua New Guinea, 

Vanuatu, Samoa, Vietnam, 

Thailand and Cambodia. 

Ferrymead Rotary’s boxes 

went to Fiji in time for Christmas. 

Last year, 8000 boxes were 

sent from the South Island, contributing 

to the 11 million boxes 

donated worldwide. 

Selling Christmas trees is 

also a long-standing tradition 

for Ferrymead Rotary – it has 

sold them every year since 1993. 

Members set up bright and early 

with trees freshly cut on the 

morning of the sale. 

After much looking, measuring,

HEATHCOTE WILL head 

into the Christmas break in 

fine spirits after winning the 

metro A one-day cricket title 

on Sunday. 

They defeated Lancaster 

Park Addington by 38 runs 

at Heathcote Domain in an 

exciting final which saw a 

number of momentum shifts 

throughout the day. 

After winning the toss and 

electing to bat first, Heathcote 

found themselves in trouble 

early after openers Matt House 

and James Knight were both 

removed within four overs at 

5/2. 

LP Addington continued 

to take early wickets with 

Heathcote at 44/4 before three 

crucial partnerships helped 

steady the ship. 

Charles Grey (29) and 

Tommy Sturgess (45) combined 

for a 54-run fifth wicket 

partnership before Grey was 

dismissed in the 24th over. 

That bought wicket-keeper/ 

batsman Jesse Ruwhiu to the 

crease who added a crucial 43 

runs. 

With the score at 179/8 

in the 40th over, Heathcote 

looked destined to be defending 

a total under 200. 

However, Craig Davenport 

provided a late flurry. The No 

10 smashed 32 – including 

three fours and a six – from 

21 deliveries to help the hosts 

post a respectable 223. 

LP Addington got away 

to a strong start in their run 

chase and were 40/0 in the 

seventh over. Heathcote then 

took three wickets for 28 runs 

to have LP Addington 68/3 

in the 18th over. A 41-run 

stand from Joseph Taylor and 

Ben Cochrane for the fourth 

wicket gave LP Addington a 

glimmer of hope. However, 

Heathcote’s ability to take 

wickets at a regular rate kept 

them in charge. 

They eventually dismissed 

the visitors for 185 in the 44th 

over. Shane McConnell (4/32) 

and Sturgess (3/46) were the 

best of the bowlers for Heathcote. 

Oliver Borrie also played 

a crucial role in restricting LP 

Addington, going for just 2.5 

runs per over to finish with 

1/20 from eight overs.

to the delight 

of Heathcote

I HAVE fond memories of the 

Scarborough Park playground. 

Not only did I take my children 

there when they were younger, 

but my parents took me to play 

there when I was a child too. In 

fact, some of the equipment is so 

old that I actually swung on it 

40-plus years ago. 

Scarborough has always been 

a destination for the city and this 

small playground is in the top 

10 most used for Christchurch. 

Most of the equipment is at the 

end of its life, though, so I’m 

really pleased to see the upgrade 

finally get under way. 

The engagement with the community 

started in late 2016 and 

while funding was briefly pushed 

out in the draft Annual Plan 

earlier this year, a very generous 

donation saw the project get back 

on track and it will be recognised 

with a plaque on site at the opening. 

Christchurch has signed up 

to become a Child and Youth 

Friendly City – part of an 

international network. As new 

facilities are developed and old 

ones renewed we are engaging 

much better with those who will 

be using them and, in this case, 

it involved working closely with 

children from Sumner to design 

a playground that they will love 

using. 

It has a mix of new equipment, 

such as the ‘eagles nest’, and natural 

play elements using sections 

of a tree that needs to be felled 

for health and safety reasons. It 

also has accessible equipment 

and a track designed for the kids’ 

mode of choice for transport 

these days – scooters. 

One of the most loved pieces 

of play equipment in the current 

playground is the old rocking 

horse. There was a desire from 

the community to keep it and so 

it will be. It will be taken out and 

tidied up before being reinstalled 

as a static piece for play. 

It’s hard to visualise a new play 

area from a plan on paper, but 

I know it’s going to be fabulous 

and I can’t wait to see the faces 

of the children when it opens in 

time for next summer.

pedestrians on the Coastal 

Pathway.

will just be ignored like the ones 

in Hagley Park. If everyone 

keeps left and is considerate of 

others (that includes adjusting 

speed and maybe moving over 

a little when someone is trying 

to get past), there won’t be a 

problem.

Keep left when walking or 

biking, cyclists warn walkers 

on approach, and pass like you 

would in a car. I walk here often 

and have noticed both 

walkers and cyclists 

seem to have forgotten 

to keep left. If people 

used commonsense 

and courtesy then 

signs are not needed, 

but many seem to lack 

that in this “all about 

me” world.

change as much as anything.

hills. Currently there is a speed 

limit of 100km/h between Rapaki 

and Governors Bay and it’s super 

dangerous with many sharp 

bends. There are so many boy 

racers around the hills at night – 

it’s just asking for trouble – how 

can you pull them up on speed 

when it says 100km/h?

Festive Season Survival Tips 

Healthy snacks are always popular 

Christmas is a time for celebration, 

spending time with friends and 

family and enjoying festive foods 

and drinks. Nutrition-wise, this 

festive fare can be a challenge. 

Here are some simple tips to help you 

survive the festivities: 

• Don’t try to lose weight over the festive 

season. With parties, families and all the 

special foods that go with Christmas, it’s 

going to be just about impossible! Your 

main aim should be to maintain your weight 

(using some of the tips below!) 

• Eat regular meals. If you skip meals you 

are more likely to fill up on high fat snacks. 

It only takes a few of these snacks to add 

up to more calories than your usual meal. 

• Avoid going to a function hungry, you 

can easily eat a lot of party food in a short 

time. Have a small snack beforehand like a 

bowl of cereal, yoghurt or a sandwich are 

quick and will help fill you up. It will also 

help if you are well hydrated, so try drinking 

a few glasses of water before you arrive. 

• Deep fried foods, crumbed and battered 

foods, cheese platter and nuts are all high in 

fat. Choose fruit, vegetable or bread based 

snacks. 

• If you are hosting the party, offer your 

guests a range of healthy snacks. Always 

popular are hummus or salsa dips with 

vegetable sticks. 

• If you are taking a plate, make yours a 

healthy option. How about a platter of fruit 

currently in season? 

• Listen to your body and stop eating 

when you feel full. 

• Just say ‘No” to food – mentally 

Be aware of how much you are actually drinking 

practice strategies to decline food offers. For 

example: “It looks amazing but I am full” or 

“I tried it and it was great”. 

• Chat and mingle. If you are bored at a 

party you’re more likely to hover around the 

food table or seek out the serving platter. A 

good conversation can distract you from the 

food. Avoid standing right beside the food 

table or bar while you’re talking. 

• Consider your drinks, they can add to 

the calorie count very quickly. Try diluting 

your alcoholic drinks, such as a spritzer 

(½ wine, ½ soda). If you prefer spirits, 

try a diet mixer. Lite beers are lower in 

calories and alcohol. Remember soft drinks, 

juices, punches, tonic water and flavoured 

mineral water can all have similar calories 

to alcoholic drinks. 

•Be aware of how much you are actually 

drinking. Alternate alcoholic drinks with 

glasses of water and non-alcoholic choices. 

• Keep active. Join in the Christmas 

backyard cricket game or go for a walk 

with friends or relatives. Remember you’re 

aiming for 30 minutes of physical activity 

each day. 

• If your regular exercise class stops over 

the Christmas break, plan other types of 

exercise - organise your friends and put a 

date in your diary. 

If you do really overdo the festive foods 

or drinks, take a deep breath and start the 

next day afresh with healthy foods and some 

exercise. No fasting - just sensible eating. 

Remember, a few parties don’t make you 

overweight, it’s what you do all the other 

days of the year which count.
