NOR’WEST NEWS Tuesday June 21 2016 3 News Mall parks needed • By Tania Green and Andrew King CARPARKING ISSUES at Northlands Shopping Centre are forcing vehicles out to suburbans streets, creating a nuisance for residents. Residents say that malls are not providing enough car parks for their employees and shoppers, with nearby streets taking the load. That means narrower streets, and not enough room for visitors to park. Papanui resident Kathleen Crisley (left) said it was particularly bad around peak time, such as holidays, with mall staff trying to find a spare space. “Easter and Christmas are times when our whole street will be full with cars. Some of them are more considerate than others when it comes to parking near driveways,” she said. But Northlands marketing manager Rebecca Sheppard said she was not aware of parking being an issue, nor has it received any complaints from surrounding residents. PARKING PROBLEMS: Residents say that malls are not providing enough car parks for their employees and shoppers meaning nearby streets are taking the load. “Northlands provides over 1700 car parks for our customers and designated parking for our retail staff and the city council have ‘time limit’ parking in most of the residential areas in close proximity to the mall,” she said. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said the problem stems from the consenting process. “Pressure needs to be put on developers to consider the employees that will need to get to their place of employment and the surrounding residents who are living nearby,” he said. He said getting people into these commercial areas without the use of a car is key. “We need to be looking at better public transportation,” he said. City councillor Paul Lonsdale said malls are not supplying enough car parks for their employees. “We are seeing the spill over into residential areas,” he said. Email andrew.king@ starmedia.kiwi In Brief MAN REUNITED WITH BAG A man has been reunited with a bag he left at a Papanui bus stop on May 30. It was taken to the Papanui Police Station. They asked the Nor’West News if it could run a picture of the man to get his possessions back to him. WHOOPING COUGH OUTBREAK A warning has gone out to parents at Paparoa Street School after an outbreak of whooping cough. Six cases were reported last week, prompting an email from principal Philip Harding to parents urging them to ensure children were up to date with their immunisations, and teach children to cover coughs and wash and dry their hands. To date, no other schools have been affected. WHEELIE BIN STOCKTAKE Kerbside wheelie bins throughout the city will be fitted with radio frequency tags as part of a stocktake starting next month. The stocktake is designed to save $9.3m on the cost of the bin collection service over the next 13 years by removing lost, damaged and stolen bins from circulation. Radio frequency tag’s will be installed to ensure bins that are damaged, stolen or found on other properties can be easily identified. The short range radio frequency chips will communicate with the collection truck as it goes past to ensure that the bin is located near the correct property. It will take approximately three years to complete.
