Young leaders recognised<br />

A MEMBER of the United<br />

Nations Youth NZ and<br />

advocate for Pasifika youth<br />

has been recognised for their<br />

exceptional contribution to<br />

the community.<br />

Ilam residents Ashley Stuart,<br />

19, and Josiah Tualamali’l,<br />

21, were among 13 people<br />

recognised at the Canterbury<br />

Youth Awards last Friday.<br />

Miss Stuart received the<br />

Wayne Francis Charitable<br />

Trust Leadership Award and<br />

Mr Tualamali’l received the<br />

CHILDREN AT EduKids<br />

Halswell have proven to become<br />

some of the best book readers<br />

in the city after being one of 12<br />

pre-schools to win a Crusaders<br />

themed bookcase.<br />

And the bookcase was<br />

delivered by three Crusaders.<br />

Ged Robinson, Leon Fukofuka​<br />

and Scott Barrett visited the<br />

pre-school last Wednesday for<br />

some chill-out time with the<br />

children.<br />

In February, pre-schools<br />

around the city and areas including<br />

the West Coast, Nelson and<br />

Marlborough entered in Jennian<br />

Homes The Great Crusade.<br />

The children spent an hour<br />

with the three Crusaders outside<br />

Supreme Youth Award for<br />

Christchurch sponsored by<br />

the city council.<br />

ACHIEVERS<br />

The criteria to win the leadership<br />

award was demonstrating<br />

outstanding leadership in<br />

the community, and showing<br />

the ability to successfully lead<br />

others.<br />

Miss Stuart is actively<br />

involved in the UNYouth NZ<br />

SPORTS<br />

playing ball sports, cycling,<br />

building in the sandpit, climbing<br />

and reading stories.<br />

Pre-schools were required to<br />

send in a dress-up photo and say<br />

why books at school are cool.<br />

The public was then required<br />

to vote online with EduKids<br />

Halswell finishing first in the<br />

region.<br />

For its entry, the school shared<br />

fairy-tale stories and dressed up<br />

as their favourite characters.<br />

“It feels pretty awesome. We<br />

are really excited our parents<br />

took the time to vote and shared<br />

it online.”<br />

Educare and Redwood<br />

Playcentre.<br />

She was recognised for<br />

taking action to get youth<br />

involved in activities that<br />

address real-life issues internationally<br />

and locally.<br />

Mr Tualamali’l is an advocate<br />

for the voices of the<br />

Pasifika youth to be heard in<br />

decision making.<br />

chairman, is on the US<br />

Embassy Youth Council and<br />

is on the board of the Pasifika<br />

mental health organisation<br />

Mr Tualamali’l met the<br />

criteria for someone who has<br />

made a significant contribution<br />

to young people in the<br />

community, addressing their<br />

needs and giving them a voice.<br />

The award recognised young<br />

people aged between 12-24.<br />
