Awards recognise<br />

volunteers’ work<br />

in community<br />

A FUNCTION held at the<br />

Waitakiri Golf Club recently<br />

honoured the work of<br />

community volunteers.<br />

Eighteen people were presented<br />

with certificates in recognition<br />

of a significant voluntary<br />

contribution to the Coastal-<br />

Burwood community.<br />

A waiata was performed by<br />

one of the recipients, Floyd Rudolph,<br />

followed by a light supper<br />

where award-winners and their<br />

families had a chance to mix<br />

with each other and members<br />

of the Coastal-Burwood Community<br />

Board.<br />

Chairwoman Kim Money said<br />

it was a wonderful evening and<br />

a valuable opportunity to recognise<br />

the often unseen work that<br />

went on in the community.<br />

Mall garden gifted to school<br />

A TEAM of 15 mothers,<br />

fathers, grandparents and staff<br />

have installed a new garden<br />

at Rawhiti School, along with<br />

members of Greening the<br />

Rubble.<br />

The Pod Oasis garden was<br />

originally constructed in the<br />

Re:Start Mall. But with the mall<br />

closing down this year, Greening<br />

the Rubble – a charitable trust<br />

that creates and maintains temporary<br />

public parks on cleared<br />

sites around Christchurch – held<br />

a competition to find a new<br />

home for the garden.<br />

The Pod Oasis, made in 2014,<br />

was designed by Johnathan<br />

Hall and Gina Payne, and was<br />

awarded a silver distinction in<br />

the Ellerslie Flower Show the<br />

same year.<br />

The competition entry, organised<br />

by Rawhiti School Parent<br />

Teacher Association chairwoman<br />

Stephanie Haskell, said: “Our<br />

children in this earthquakeaffected<br />

suburb need beauty in<br />

their lives and the chance to feel<br />

special.<br />

“We believe our school is a<br />

symbol of the regeneration in<br />

the eastern suburbs.”<br />

The school was created<br />

through a three-way merger of<br />

North New Brighton, Freeville<br />

and Central New Brighton<br />

primary schools after the earthquakes.<br />

Rawhiti School deputy principal<br />

Helen Parata said they were<br />

“absolutely delighted” with winning<br />

the garden.<br />

Mrs Parata had nothing but<br />

praise for the Pod Oasis. “It’s<br />

completely transformed the<br />

area,” she said.<br />

With how big the garden is,<br />

Mrs Parata said it looks like it<br />

has always been there.<br />

“The Pod Oasis garden has<br />

become a popular place for the<br />

children to visit.’’<br />

members with some of the community service award<br />

recipients.<br />

Chisnallwood Intermediate School band<br />

Class Disruption (above) not only made the<br />

Canterbury regional finals of Smokefree<br />

Rockquest, they placed third. Director of<br />

music at Chisnallwood Judith Bell said it<br />

was “a massive achievement for a band so<br />

young. They are just in years 7 and 8 – the<br />

youngest band to play in the regional finals.” Class Disruption performed two original songs<br />

written by Dylan Jonkers, who is also plays bass and sings. Sho Woodhouse plays drums,<br />

Hiromu Crosado, keyboards and Jacob Carey plays guitar. Runners-up, last year’s regional<br />

winners Fuzhun (right) from Shirley Boys’ High School, also won the Smokefree vocals<br />

award. The winner, Christ’s College band Runn77 will represent Canterbury at the national<br />

finals in September.<br />
