I’m now 54 and have not let the condition hold me back, in fact I’ve used it as a springboard to set goals and achieve them. Leading up to the diagnosis, I could not work out why I was having uncontrollable twitches when falling asleep. At a 1983 Youth Easter Camp I had a seizure, where I blacked out and was taken to hospital with concussion and a suspected broken nose. My worried parents waited while an electroencephalogram revealed the spikes of the ‘extra’ electricity in my brain. Following this, I was diagnosed with myoclonic epilepsy. I was put on medication, which I’ve remained on since, in order to keep the epilepsy under control. One of the consequences of this newly-acquired condition was not being able to drive for two years. It also meant cycling with a helmet. Cycling wearing a yellow helmet in Palmerston North in 1983 was a novel experience for everyone, both me and the locals. “Hey skid-lid”, or “moon-head” were all part of the experience of passing motorists in Palmy. Shortly after I was diagnosed and told someone about it, they said: “Oh, you’re an epileptic.” It was that labelling that was to become the impetus for me to set goals and pursue them. In February, I will be taking part in my seventh Coast to Coast event with MP Poto Williams. If you see someone having a seizure and lying on the ground, ensure that they do not come into contact with any furniture if inside and that they can’t hurt themselves. Once the seizure is finished, depending on the severity of it, check that they’re able to breathe without any obstructions in their mouth. They will probably be able to talk to you but may be a bit groggy. In some cases they may need medical attention but every person and every case is different. Those of us with epilepsy, our family and friends, want to be accepted. We should all work to put an end to the stigma around it. Those of us with epilepsy have extra electricity in our brains! So employ us, be cool with us and above all, give us a chance. Everyone has their own data and headphones to listen to whatever they want, and if noise is so loud that it’s annoying, it will annoy all patrons too. The thefts have angered Surf Life Saving New Zealand, which says it won’t be able to replace them for the summer. Said SLSNZ sports manager Scotty Roberts: “For the last 15 years, we’ve never had any problems, but in the last two weeks, we’ve been hit by two breakins and case of vandalism.” “All the stuff that we have in there we have to fund for, so even as a national body, we still fund for gear and, yes, it’s all insured . . . it’s just more the inconvenience and the fact that they are stealing from a voluntary organisation whose job is to help and save people,” said Mr Roberts. Two SLSNZ trailers were stolen from the Owles Tce compound on October 29. Following this, security was increased and new locks were added. Then, on November 6, another break-in occurred, this time the GONE: Surf club members with specialised trailers that have been stolen from a storage shed in New Brighton. thieves bypassed the locks and took the gate off by its hinges. An IRB trailer belonging to North Beach Surf Club was taken, along with a canoe trailer owned by the South New Brighton Surf Club. The thieves attempted to steal a third trailer which had a wheel lock, so they let the tyres down. Paddles and a laptop were also taken from a Waka Ama storage facility next door on the same night. Police are asking for anyone who may know anything about the thefts or the whereabouts of the trailers to come forward. THE SOUTHSHORE Residents Association is looking for funding for an automated external defibrillator. Currently in the Southshore and South New Brighton communities, there is only one AED available at South New Brighton School which can be used during school hours. The residents’ association has identified the need for another one which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The next closest option for an AED is in New Brighton, where there are six. Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk RESPONSE: The Southshore Residents Association has requested funding for an external defibrillator. Defibrillator funding needed South Brighton Holiday Park is willing to host the AED, if funding is granted. The residents’ association has submitted an application to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board’s Discretionary Response Fund, however, the city council is recommending the community board decline the application for $2900. There are around 500 houses in Southshore and 1700 in South New Brighton. The 2017/2018 Discretionary Response Fund has a total budget of $93,838 and $20,750 has been granted to date.
