Facebook us onfacebook.com/riseupchristchurch/ neighbourhood NEWS Air pollution drops Dust levels still high TOM DOUDNEY The number of high air pollution nights in the Woolston area have dropped to the lowest level in the last 10 years, monitoring shows. However, dust levels are still higher than before the earthquakes. Quantities of PM10 (particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometres) measured at the Environment Canterbury monitoring station in Woolston exceeded national health standards on four nights last year and only once so far this year. That was down from a high of 23 in 2011, when the city was hit by the February 22 earthquake. The next lowest number of exceedances for the last 10 years from 2006 was 11 in 2010. High PM10 levels are associated with a number of health conditions such as difficulty breathing, irritation of the airways, reduced lung function IN THE AIR: A commercial development on Ferry Rd. Woolston is one of two Christchurch locations, along with St Albans, where ECan has monitoring stations. They were chosen because they were historically the worst suburbs in the city for air pollution. Woolston Community Association co-ordinator Carol Brown said dust was still more noticeable than before the earthquakes, although for most residents it was just “a minor nuisance.” “We have had a few members mention that at their home they have a lot of dust around still,” she said. “I think a lot of us have just put it down to ‘that’s life now’ and because there are so many roadworks and things happening that sort of stirs it all up again.” ECan director for air Katherine Trought (left) said air pollution in the Woolston area from home heating had fallen. However, dust levels were still high throughout the year – although not high enough to raise PM10 concentrations above national health standards. PM10 concentrations in the Woolston area came from a number of sources and activities. These included home heating, industrial operations and activities such as land development, transport and movement occurring over large areas of loose or bare earth. “We have been working with homeowners and industry postearthquakes to ensure a balance is maintained between supporting recovery and improving air quality,” Ms Trought said. As of September, under national guidelines Christchurch will be required to have no more than three exceedances recorded in total for its Woolston and St Albans monitoring stations. From September 2020, that will drop to one exceedance. PM10 exceedances per year Year and number of days standards exceeded 2006 - 21 2007 - 13 2008 - 19 2009 - 12 2010 - 11 2011 - 23 2012 - 18 2013 - 21 2014 - 14 2015 - 4 MAKEOVER FOR WOOLSTON Woolston is set to get a makeover on Saturday, thanks to the Student Volunteer Army. A river clean-up, tree planting, gardening, art and bird habitat restoration projects are planned as part of the City Care Connect the Community initiative. About 150 students are expected to volunteer on the day, with a community barbecue to be held at Bamford School, 12-2pm, after the projects have been completed. WASTEWATER REPAIRS Repairs to earthquake damaged wastewater pipes starting this week in Bowenvale Ave, Cashmere, will take about a month to complete. Temporary traffic lights are in place. The work is part of the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team’s repair programme. BID TO INSTALL TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES Addington Neighbourhood Association chairwoman Sarah McKenzie plans to ask the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board about the possibility of painting pictures or patterns on the side of the road as a traffic calming measure. Ms McKenzie said the street had a high traffic volume and many people drove too fast. The tactic has been used at the intersection of Shand Cres and Tara St in Riccarton and is more common in the United States.
