CASHMERE HIGH School face<br />

their toughest task of the season to<br />

date when they play Christchurch<br />

Boys’ High School tonight.<br />

It’s been the perfect start for last<br />

year’s beaten finalists in the Thompson<br />

Trophy.<br />

They are currently undefeated<br />

through seven games and find<br />

themselves at the top of the competition.<br />

Year 12 point guard Connor<br />

McLaughlin has been the stand-out<br />

performer for Cashmere this year.<br />

He has 37 assists, second in the<br />

league. The point guard is also not<br />

afraid to score, he had a game-high<br />

32 points in his teams win over<br />

Christ’s College last week.<br />

Sharp-shooter Ruben Stanley has<br />

also been instrumental in the team’s<br />

success.<br />

The senior is among the competition’s<br />

top three-point shooters with<br />

15 to date.<br />

Cashmere lost a number of players<br />

following last year’s grand-final<br />

campaign.<br />

They now have one of the youngest<br />

line-ups in the league, with the<br />

majority of their team all year 12<br />

boys and younger.<br />

“We have quite a lot of young guys<br />

in the team this year, we even have<br />

a couple of year 10 players getting<br />

some good game time,” Cashmere<br />

coach Ben Sheat said.<br />

It gets tough for Cashmere now,<br />

though, with a visit to third placed<br />

Boys’ High tonight.<br />

They then play second placed<br />

Burnside in seven days time.<br />

“They’re two massive games, the<br />

next two weeks will show us where<br />

we are at,” Sheat said.<br />

A good crowd is expected at Boys’<br />

High, with 100-200 students usually<br />

turning out for games.<br />

It won’t just be the boisterous<br />

home support Cashmere will have<br />

to be wary of either. Boys’ High<br />

boast the likes of Canterbury Rams<br />

guard Quinn Clinton who has<br />

recently returned from a trip to<br />

China.<br />

off at 6pm.<br />
