Rowley school may move

NEWS THAT Rowley Avenue 

School may move to another site 

has sent shock waves through the 

community. 

The Ministry of Education 

held a public meeting last week 

where it outlined six options for 

the future of the decile 1 school, 

including shifting sites. 

Wigram MP Megan Woods, 

who was at the meeting, said 

the community sent a “loud and 

clear” message that shifting was 

not a preferred option. 

Principal Anthony Faitaua said 

he did not want to say what all 

six options were in case it created 

a “community uproar”. 

But he did confirm to the 

Southern View that moving the 

school is an option. 

He said the options had been 

presented in light of a new school 

being proposed in the area. 

Last week, the Southern View 

reported that Halswell would 

be getting a new $15 million 

primary school. 

In 2013, media reported that 

Rowley Avenue School was concerned 

about its future because 

Spreydon School was being 

rebuilt nearby on the former 

Manning Intermediate site. 

“I understand how much 

school communities mean and 

the last thing I want to create 

is an uproar without all the 

concrete facts in front of me,” Mr 

Faitaua said. 

He said there would be 

more information presented 

to the community on September 

14. 

Dr Woods said: “I can’t work 

it out, Rowley School is a pivotal 

part of the community. It is more 

than just a school.”

Supermarket ready for shoppers 

WOOLSTON residents will have 

a new place to get the groceries 

when the New World Ferry Rd 

opens its doors tomorrow. 

The supermarket has been 

built next to the existing site and 

will be officially opened by Ruth 

Dyson in the morning. 

The supermarket has been a 

year in the making and owneroperator 

Greg Boock (below) 

said it was in “fantastic shape.” 

“There is triple the retail space 

that we had before, meaning 

wider and longer aisles,” Mr 

Boock said. 

Foodstuffs South Island’s 

general manager of property and 

retail development Roger Davidson 

also said the supermarket was 

looking good for the opening. 

“I’ve had a walk-through already 

and it really is a wonderful 

store – modern, bright and ecofriendly, 

with energy-efficient 

lighting, ozone-friendly refrigeration, 

and facilities for waste 

minimisation, which is a strong 

focus for Foodstuffs right now,” 

Mr Davidson said. 

There is a total of 11 checkouts, 

with five of them being self 

-service and since the original 

store was demolished this has 

left space for 114 car parks, triple 

what was previously there.

EDMONDS GATE 

The Sure to Rise gate which 

was stolen from the Edmonds 

Factory Garden in Waltham 

in March last year and later 

found on Takaka Hill, near 

Nelson, has finally been 

returned to Christchurch. 

The gate was stolen by Nelson 

woman Melanie Diana 

Edmonds and after being 

found was held by police until 

its return could be arranged. It 

is now in storage at Mona Vale 

awaiting a decision on where 

in the Edmonds Factory 

Garden it should be installed. 

It’s former position has been 

taken by a new replica gate 

which was made due to fears 

the original would not be 

recovered. 

NEW SOCIAL HOUSING 

Eight new social housing 

units in Waltham have been 

opened. The units are part of 

the city council’s Osborne St 

housing complex. They replace 

four earthquake-damaged 

units demolished last year. 

The four one-bedroom and 

four two-bedroom homes 

have been insulated beyond 

Building Code requirements 

and feature double glazing. 

Tenants are expected to begin 

moving in this month.

on a new primary school 

proposed for western 

Halswell 

I think a new primary school is 

essential because of the growing 

population. 

There is no need for a high 

school in the Halswell area as we 

are zoned for Hillmorton High 

School and this school is not at 

capacity. 

A high percentage of Halswell 

parents think they are better than 

people living in the Hillmorton- 

Hoon Hay area and refuse to 

send their “precious” children 

there. 

A huge pack mentality of anti- 

Hillmorton High School parents 

live in Halswell. They would 

rather sell their house and 

move into another school area 

such as Lincoln or Riccarton 

than send their child to our local 

school. 

I am very ashamed of living 

in the area with people so judgemental. 

The high school does not 

deserve the reputation it has 

acquired – historical gossip by 

people not even willing to give it 

a go. The parents pass their judgements 

onto their child and now 

we have this young generation 

mirroring their parents attitudes. 

One child I can think of 

made fun of children going to 

Hillmorton High School, saying 

they would not get a job because 

they had Hillmorton High School 

written on their CV. 

I wonder where she got this 

attitude from. Halswell is a community 

divided.

Check the heat lamp 

in your bathroom

NOT EVERYONE will be 

aware that the Fire Service are 

responding with St John to 

serious illness incidents. 

Apparently some people have 

been quite upset to see a great 

big fire truck arrive in their time 

of need, possibly thinking their 

call has been misunderstood 

and the wrong service has arrived. 

That’s not the case. Both 

services will be sent. Sometimes 

that means our crew will arrive 

first. 

We’re not paramedics but we 

are all first-aid trained and there 

are times our crews’ input is 

utterly invaluable to our ambulance 

colleagues. 

Every bit of help might just 

make the difference. 

Twenty-one calls this week 

were in this category, one fifth 

of all our call-outs. 

A bit of a blast from the past 

in Halswell this week, where 

a three-way light/heat-lamp/ 

extractor in a bathroom ceiling 

caught on fire. 

Some years ago this problem

was more prevalent. 

New installations require the 

fan to automatically operate 

when the heat-lamp is turned 

on, but previously, and obviously 

in the unit in Halswell, the 

heat-lamps could be turned on 

alone. 

They tended to overheat the 

surrounding plastic and sometimes 

ignite. 

If you have one of these, check 

it. If both functions don’t operate 

together, make sure they are 

both on every time you use the 

heat-lamp and consider getting 

your electrician to make the 

alteration. 

Might save some tears. 

Spring is here. 

That’s a reason to feel good. 

Keep fire safe as we head 

toward another summer. 

Major changes to the general rules include: 

• All dog owners must carry plastic bags to clean up dog 

poo when in public places. 

• When dog owners have their dog off-leash in a 

public place, they must have it “under effective 

control”, which means being aware of where their 

dog is and what it is doing, and ensuring it is 

responsive to commands and not creating a nuisance.

Reducing flood risk

A WETLANDS area designed 

to reduce flood risk from the 

Heathcote River is also expected 

to provide a future recreational 

destination in the south-west. 

The Eastman Wetlands, between 

Sparks Rd, Cashmere Rd, 

Hendersons Rd and Sutherlands 

Rd, is expected to be opened to 

walkers and cyclists in 2019. 

The area is important to 

migratory birds flying between 

Te Waihora and the Avon- 

Heathcote Estuary. It is currently 

fenced off to the public 

and stock is being grazed on 

part of the site. 

At the end of last year, the city 

council bought two properties, 

totalling nearly 37ha, for $6.48 

million, adjacent to land it already 

owned in the area known 

as Hendersons Basin. 

The new properties were 

bought for flood mitigation 

purposes but may also be incorporated 

into the wetlands which 

had been planned for the land it 

already owned. 

The land is being engineered 

to reduce flood risk in the middle 

and upper reaches of the 

Heathcote River back to preearthquake 

levels by absorbing 

more floodwater.

the lower Heathcote, due to tidal 

influence in the lower reaches. 

City council manager land 

drainage Keith Davison said 

work on developing the wetlands 

would take place over 

the summers of 2017-18 and 

2018-19. 

The wetlands are named after 

the late city council civil engineer 

Roy Eastman. 

Mr Davison said the network 

of large stormwater basins and 

wetlands that were a feature of 

south-west Christchurch and 

Heathcote Valley were a significant 

legacy of Mr Eastman who 

served as drainage team leader 

from 1995 to 2007 and as team 

leader capital investigations 

until 2011.

SERIOUS INJURIES 

A man was taken to 

Christchurch Hospital in a 

serious condition after a three 

vehicle crash in Westmorland 

on Sunday. St John sent an 

ambulance to the scene on 

the corner of Cashmere Rd 

and Penruddock Rise at about 

10.30am. A man, in his 50s, was 

assessed at the scene and then 

taken to hospital for further 

treatment. 

TREE REMOVALS 

The removal of six trees in 

Edmonds Park, Linwood, and 

the transplanting of another on 

Ryan St will be up for approval 

at today’s Hagley-Ferrymead 

Community Board meeting. This 

would enable flood mitigation 

projects in Bells Creek to be 

completed. The work will include 

pipe upgrades, two detention 

basins and a pump station with 

a screen upstream. Three of the 

trees have been evaluated as 

being in ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ 

condition with the other four in 

‘fair’ condition. 

CAR PARK MAY GO 

Four car parks around the 

intersection of Shortland St and 

Tahuna St, Woolston, may be 

removed and no stopping restrictions 

introduced to improve 

visibility for drivers. The Hagley- 

Ferrymead Community Board 

will vote on whether to approve 

the changes at today’s meeting. 

A resident had raised concerns 

that vehicles approaching the 

intersection from Tahuna St 

had limited visibility due to cars 

parked on Shortland St. 

BIKER IN HOSPITAL 

A man, in his teens, was taken 

to Christchurch Hospital 

with moderate injuries after 

a mountain bike incident in 

Cashmere on Sunday. St John 

sent an ambulance to the 

scene in Victoria Park at about 

12.45pm and took him 

to hospital for further treatment. 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 

CanTeen is seeking help from 

the community this month for 

its annual street fundraising 

drive. The CanTeen Street Appeal 

on September 16 forms a 

key part of the cancer charity’s 

fundraising each year and requires 

significant people power.

FIRSTLY I have to ask what 

your roller derby name is? 

It’s Evilknevil, I picked it 

because it just worked really well 

with the fact my name is Kay. 

Can you tell me why you decided 

to get into roller derbies? 

There was myself and a couple 

of others talking about it one day 

and we decided to go to watch 

a practice and see what was 

involved and it just seemed really 

fun so we thought we would 

do it. 

Can you explain to me what 

is involved in a roller derby? 

Well, it’s played on an oval 

track and you have 14 people 

from each team on the side lines. 

But there are only five people on 

the track at any one time. But 

players rotate throughout the 

game so that’s why there is so 

many. There is a jammer who 

is the one designated to score 

points by lapping people on the 

opposite team and then the other 

four are blockers. Most people 

can be blockers, you can have 

any body type really, but jammers 

are usually a bit slighter 

built and have good stamina. 

Jams, which are the sessions, 

have a time limit of two minutes

There are a lot of referees involved 

in the game and, if they 

catch you doing something intentional 

towards another player 

that can hurt them, you’ll be 

given a penalty or possibly taken 

off. There is only a certain area 

on the body where you can hit 

people and that’s not above the 

shoulders and it’s not below the 

knees. You can’t elbow people or 

punch people, or anything like 

that. It’s like any contact sport, 

you can get hurt. But I have had 

worse injuries from soccer than 

from roller derbies believe it or 

not. 

Really? I always thought it 

was very violent? 

A lot of people do, but we have 

a lot of protective gear as well. 

Have you had any bad hits? 

None that have made me want 

to stop playing. I have had a few 

where I’ve thought, oh, that’s a 

goodie or that’s going to hurt 

later, but I’ve always got back 

into it.

Yeah, I have been roller skating 

ever since I was a kid, so I had 

the skills before getting involved. 

I thought it would be a fun 

chance to do something I really 

enjoyed as a kid. 

How long have you been

Since September of 2009. I 

have played for the same team 

the whole time as well. There 

were quite a few of us just discovering 

what roller derby was. 

Where you nervous before 

your first game? 

It was so long ago now I can’t 

really remember, but yeah, I 

think I would have been. I mean 

who wouldn’t be? I think it’s the 

same feeling before playing in 

any sport. I was nervous and 

anxious, but I was excited too. 

It’s basically the same feeling 

before any game I think. But you 

practice and train before, so you 

are prepared for the game. 

How do you train? 

I don’t want to give too many 

secrets away about our training. 

We practice layouts and tactics 

and things like that, making sure 

the team works well and everyone 

is on the same page. But we 

have a really strong core team, 

so we already work really well 

together. 

Do you balance work with 

training? 

I work for Vivace Espresso. I 

drive around the city teaching 

people how to make coffee so 

they can keep Christchurch caffeinated 

basically. 

Has much changed in the 

game over the years? 

The rules have changed a bit 

over the years. Our rules come 

from the American roller derby 

league. So when they make 

changes or alter the rules of the 

game or safety rules or something, 

we do the same. So there 

have been small changes over the 

years. 

Have you noticed roller derby 

change in popularity? 

I can’t really say if the sport 

has gained or lost popularity, but 

our team has always done well. 

We have had members come and 

go for various reasons; they don’t 

want to do this anymore, or they 

want to pursue different things, 

or they decide to have a family, 

so they come and go throughout 

the sport, but we always have a 

great team. 

What are some of your 

highlights from roller derby? 

There have been a couple. 

I don’t want to blow my own 

trumpet, but I represented New 

Zealand at the 2011 World Cup 

in Toronto and the 2014 World 

Cup in Dallas. That required a 

lot of fundraising because it’s 

not a cheap event to take part 

in. I was really shocked actually 

because my team presented me 

with a cheque to help me out. I 

cried when they did that. I was 

really surprised and couldn’t 

believe they had given me that 

support. They are some of my 

really close friends. 

You’ve got a big roller derby 

meet coming up as well, right? 

Yeah, this weekend actually. 

We’re facing off against Wellington, 

which will be a really good 

game. We are currently ranked 

third in New Zealand and they 

are number one. We played them 

previously and they beat us by 

150 points, so we really want 

to redeem that. Really looking 

forward to facing off.

council meetings

YANI JOHANSON has finished 

top of the class for attendance 

at city council meetings this 

term. 

Data just released by the city 

council shows that Cr Johanson, 

who represents the Hagley Ferrymead 

ward, has attended all 

83 meetings. 

Fellow ward representative 

Cr Paul Lonsdale missed just 

three meetings, while Spreydon- 

Heathcote city councillors Phil 

Clearwater and Tim Scandrett 

missed three and four respectively. 

Crs Johanson, Lonsdale and 

Clearwater are all seeking reelection 

in October while Cr 

Scandrett has been automatically 

reappointed unopposed. 

Cr Johanson also did not 

miss a meeting of the Strategy 

and Finance Committee while 

Cr Clearwater missed just one 

meeting. 

At the Communities, Housing 

and Economic Development 

Committee, Cr Johanson and Cr 

Lonsdale have both attended 22 

out of 23 meetings. Cr Scandrett 

has a record of 14 out of 17, he 

was not a member of the committee 

until May 2015. 

Cr Clearwater had the best 

attendance at Infrastructure, 

Transport and Environment 

Committee from October 2014 

to the present. He is the current 

chairman. 

At the Regulation and Consents 

Committee Cr Lonsdale 

had the worst attendance. He 

attend nine meetings out of a 

possible 14. 

RESTORATION: Strengthening and repair work is set to begin on a 

historic stone building at Halswell Quarry Park. 

Iconic quarry buildings 

get earthquake repairs 

AN OLD stone building is one 

of several historic structures at 

Halswell Quarry Park about to 

have earthquake repairs and 

strengthening work done. 

A well-known landmark, 

the stone structure marks the 

entrance to Halswell Quarry Park 

and dates back to 1927, when it 

was built as the Halswell Quarry 

manager’s residence. 

The stone-built house had stabilisation 

work carried out after the 

earthquake, but requires strengthening 

and repairing, which will 

be done by contractor’s Dominion 

Constructors Ltd. 

The company, appointed by the 

city council, will also be working 

to restore the quarry’s Singleman’s 

Quarters. 

The quarters were built to house 

both families and temporary 

workers at the quarry. The building 

dates back to 1922. 

Dominion will carry out 

structural repairs to the quarry’s 

crusher plant buildings, which 

date back to 1912. 

Work on all the buildings is 

expected to be completed at the 

end of the year.

Girls’ High chefs award 

winning crispy chicken

TWO Christchurch Girls’ 

High School students have 

taken gold in a national 

culinary competition. 

Emily Perkins and Bridget 

James competed in the National 

Secondary Schools Culinary 

Challenge in Auckland last 

week. 

The girls took third place 

and received a gold medal, 

with a score of 92/100. 

The pair qualified for the 

national competition after 

winning the Christchurch 

regional final. 

The competition involved 

creating four portions of an 

entree and a main dish in 90 

minutes. 

Hospitality teacher Holy 

Caird helped them prepare for 

the competition. 

Miss Caird said she was 

proud of how the girls performed 

under pressure in the 

busy kitchen. 

“Myself and the school are 

immensely proud of the girls, 

they have done really well.” 

Miss Caird said. 

The girls faced off against 

eight teams.

As an entree, they made 

herbed silverbeet and feta 

galette rested on carved 

venison loin, with beetroot, 

pinot noir and balsamic 

reduction, crispy salad of 

rainbow chard stems, finished 

with silverbeet flakes. 

For a main, they made crispy 

skin chicken breast stuffed 

with mozzarella, semi-dried 

tomatoes and basil served with 

potato gnocchi, grilled baby 

bell peppers and pancetta, and 

caramelised brussels sprouts 

on corn cream sauce. 

Miss Caird said the competition 

was like an episode out of 

a cooking programme, with 

the judges questioning the girls 

as they cooked and the tasting 

took place in a different room. 

Emily plans to take a hospitality 

course once she leaves 

school. Bridget is currently 

unsure what she plans to study, 

but will definitely looking at 

hospitality as an option. 

STRENGTHENING: South Library and Beckenham Service Centre 

has been temporarily strengthened is awaiting a decision on the 

extent of repair works. 

Centre repairs in discussion 

A DECISION on how much will be 

spent to repair South Library and 

Beckenham Community Centre 

will be decided on Thursday. 

The city council will have three 

options to consider but the preferred 

and deemed the best value 

for money will cost $8.6 million. 

The library was badly 

damaged in the February 

22, 2011 earthquake. 

It was closed in 2012, due 

to safety concerns but was 

reopened in the December 

after some work was done to 

strengthen the building. 

The $8.6 million option 

comes under the $15.5m 

budgeted for the work. 

Spreydon Heathcote community 

board member Melanie Coker 

(above) said the preferred option 

covered what was needed. 

“If it fixes the safety standard 

and if it is still usable then that’s all 

that matters,” Ms Coker said. 

The second option includes 

repairing and strengthening the 

building and replacing the buildings 

foundations. This is expected to cost 

$14m. 

The third option is currently over 

the budget which includes 

repairing, strengthening, 

replacing the building foundations 

and also re-levelling 

the building. This option is 

expected to cost $16.2m. 

The preferred option 

would strengthen the 

building to 100 per cent of 

the new building standard 

and the work is expected to take 

between 10-12 months to complete. 

The repair works are not expected 

to begin until August next 

year, after the city’s central library 

has been completed.

Talent on show at Cultural Festival 

SCHOOLS 

Twelve schools in the southern area of the city took part in the 

Christchurch Schools’ Cultural Festival. It provided pupils with a citywide 

multicultural experience. Thorrington School, Spreydon School, 

West Spreydon School, Opawa School, St Martins School, Hillmorton 

School, Linwood North School, St Anne’s Catholic School, Linwood 

Avenue School, Opawa School, Waltham School and Beckenham 

School all entered teams. The festival featured multicultural 

performances, as well as a visual art exhibition and wearable art 

pageants.

Students find

SCALING WALLS and 

navigating tricky rock formations 

was no problem for Cashmere 

High School students last week. 

Two teams from the school 

won sections of the South Island 

Secondary Schools Climbing 

Competition. The boys and girls 

teams both took out the top spot. 

The competition was held at the 

YMCA. There were 150 students 

from high schools around the 

South Island involved in the competition. 

Cashmere High School entered 

a boys, girls and mixed team in 

the competition. 

The goal of the competition was 

to get as many team members to 

climb as high as possible in the 

allotted 5 minutes. 

Individuals times were also 

recorded, Cashmere students Jacob 

O’Carroll and Tess Steel both 

placed third in the individual sections 

for the boys and girls competition. 

The event was created 

by YMCA to validate climbing as 

a sport and to encourage young 

people to get involved. 

YMCA Adventure Centre manager 

Mike Barber said this year 

more schools and more places 

have taken part than in the previous 

years. 

Big future for Lopas 

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ 

High School’s Jack Lopas is a 

rower with “tonnes of promise” 

following his world junior 

rowing gold medal. 

Canterbury Rowing regional 

manger John Wylie praised 

the 17-year-old’s performance, 

saying he is one to look out for 

in the future. 

“He has tonnes of power. He’s 

got good technique and he is 

somebody who we believe is 

going to continue to improve,” 

he said.

got bronze in the men’s coxless 

four; former Christ’s College 

student Cameron Smith placed 

fourth in the junior men’s eight;

Hugo Elworthy got bronze in 

the men’s coxless four and Sam 

Bosworth won gold in the men’s 

coxed four. 

Tough weather conditions in 

the final race was no match for 

Lopas and Jenkins who earned 

the world championship title 

after fighting hard to come back 

from third place. 

The Kiwis were behind 

Belarus and Germany. But by 

the halfway point, Belarus had 

dropped off, giving Lopas and 

Jenkins the chance to surge past. 

They went on to overtake 

Germany and clinch the 

gold medal with a time of 6m, 

26.19s.

confidence & safety 

Driving instructor Jeff Macey set up 

his business at the beginning of this 

year, and is glad he finally made the 

decision. 

“I thought about the AA Driving 

Instructor role for some time and 

I was attracted to the lifestyle and 

opportunity of building up my own 

business, so I decided it was time 

to leave my job as an employment 

consultant to invest and help drivers 

to become empowered to be the best 

drivers they can be,” Jeff says. 

He had spent a number of years 

working directly with people from 

many ethnicities, including young 

adults, helping them to set achievable 

goals and to encourage people to 

believe that “all things are possible”. 

“I’m passionate to see people become 

confident, considerate, safe drivers 

to reduce accidents and deaths on 

New Zealand roads. My wife’s mother 

was tragically killed in a motor 

vehicle accident so there is some deep 

empathy and passion to help teach 

people to drive confidently, safely and 

take ownership of their driving.” 

Jeff says he is an encourager, who 

likes to see the best in others. 

“I really enjoy building up people 

to believe that they can reach their 

goals and aspirations in a positive and 

realistic way. I’m easy to work with 

and I get results by good planning and 

staying focused. 

“I chose AA because the name 

is trusted and reliable and the 

organisation is well known in New 

Zealand as being reputable, which 

is really important for me to be 

associated with. However, I also trade 

as JM Driver Training Ltd to offer 

clients the choice of service.” 

Whether his clients are just entering 

their driving careers or are seasoned 

seniors just wanting to refresh, Jeff 

says the challenge is great, especially 

knowing he has helped to contribute 

to a safer driving culture by helping 

people to become defensive and safe 

drivers. 

“Anyone can drive a car, but not 

everyone has the skills to control 

the car, and in today’s fast-paced life 

drivers need to be well trained in 

applying the Golden Rule to driving, 

which is ‘to do to others as they would 

like to be treated themselves’. This is 

about courtesy, self-control and good 

road knowledge. 

“I try to pass on a positive message 

to parents and assure them that I will 

teach their kids well and help them to 

pass their driving licence.” 

Outside work, Jeff enjoys growing 

scented lilies, travel, most sports, 

music and “a good red wine”. He is 

married with a grown-up family and 

has three grandchildren.

lifeguards have put their 

hands up for help. 

The North Beach Surf 

Lifesaving Club will celebrate 

100 years of service 

to the community later 

this year and is looking 

for former members and 

memorabilia for its centennial 

celebrations at Labour 

weekend.

contacted former members 

but many could not be 

found. 

“We are extraordinarily

never having had a drowning 

in the patrolled area of 

our beach since we began 

patrols in 1916,” he said. 

“The North Beach community 

has been incredibly 

supportive of the club over 

the years and we are asking 

locals to help us track 

down former members.”

during the summer and

rescues and preventive
