Upcoming game a
must win for Cashmere
• By Andrew King
ATTACKING FLAIR and
solid defence is what will help
Cashmere High finish strongly
in the Connetics first XI football
competition and qualify for the
boys’ lotto premier tournament
in Napier, coach says.
Cashmere showed that last
Wednesday with a 6-0 win
over Christ’s College at the
Christchurch Football Centre
moving them into third position
on the table.
Coach Craig Squire said it was
exactly the type of play needed
to get them to nationals which
runs from September 4-8.
Eddie Wilkinson scored a hattrick,
captain Lyle Matthysen
netted two and Henry Mabin
scored one. Now they turn their
attention to fourth-placed St
Thomas tomorrow night.
“The plan now is to build
on this and be a very difficult
team to break down, while still
maintaining the attacking flair
and talent that the boys have,”
he said.
St Thomas coach Richard
Washington said the recent
loss 3-1 to Lincoln was tough,
particularly when they had to
hand the Connetics Shield over,
but he expects them to bounce
back.
“I know the boys’ attitude
will be completely different for
Cashmere and hopefully we can
put up a good fight,” he said.
Squire said it will be another
must-win to keep national hope
alive.
“It is vital that we keep winning
as all the teams are wanting
one of the top four places for
qualification to nationals.”
Nationals will feature 32 of
the best teams from across the
country split into eight pools of
four.
Four of the 32 will be
GOOD WIN: Lyle
Matthysen scored
a brace in the 6-0
win over Christ’s.
Now they look to
take points from
fourth-placed St
Thomas tomorrow
night.
selected from the Christchurch
competition.
The top two from each pool
will progress into the top 16,
while the rest will play for
positions 17-32.
Points table
TOMO SHIBATA’S seven-year
wait to attend the tae kwon do
world championships is finally
over – he has been selected to
compete in October.
The Halswell instructor,
alongside 58 others, will head to
Dublin, Ireland to fight for his
country.
He said when the email
appeared in his inbox, he was
nervous to open it, previously
the emails had contained
disappointing news.
“When I read it my hands
were shaking and my heart was
pounding. I was like finally, I’ve
made it,” he said.
He hones his craft every day
of the week balancing running
Long wait over for
tae kwon do instructor
“I have put in a lot of hard
work to get here and I am very
excited to have the opportunity
to head to the world champs,”
he said.
Shibata will compete in
the individual male pattern
category.
Pattern is a showcase of
techniques and skills – some say
it is like fighting an imaginary
opponent.
“I don’t like that comparison,”
Shibata laughed.
Shibata started doing tae
kwon do in 2006 and gained his
4th Dan Black Belt in December
2016.
He has competed in
numerous regional and
national competitions as well as
representing New Zealand at the
2012 and 2014 world cups.
