The trucks are taking a short cut through this residential street and the authorities don’t seem to care. Residents went to Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods for help in April. But Galloway says a city-wide bylaw probably won’t work in Lodestar Ave. She’s got to be joking! City council head of recreation, sports and events John Filsell said staff were looking at the old nursery site on Smith St, the old Linwood Service Centre site over the road, Woolston Park, Bromley Park and the northwest parcel of Linwood Park. “On initial assessment, 141 Smith St, the old nursery, had notable advan- John Filsell tages over other sites – however it is yet to be determined if a preferred status will be given to a particular site.” Mr Filsell said until a site was chosen, it was not yet known whether any buildings, including Linwood Service Centre, would need to be demolished. “Council will consider all the advantages and implications of any identified site before making a decision.” The community board room is still operating out of the Linwood Service Centre building PREFERRED: The old nursery site on Smith St is one of five locations being looked at for the Linwood Woolston pool. on Smith St, but the centre and library is now based at Eastgate Shopping Centre. A report is being prepared for the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board seeking recommendations on what sites should be put forward for public consultation, Mr Filsell said. “The decision around site selection can only be made once consultation and engagement has been undertaken and an options report generated. This is expected early in 2018.” Construction is meant to begin at the end of 2019, with $21,789,309 budgeted for the project, Mr Filsell said. He said the budget provided for funding from 2017/18 to 2020/21. But Linwood Ward city councillor Yani Johanson said the construction was originally meant to begin next year, and he could not understand why that had changed. “There’s an overwhelming desire for it and the council just needs to get on and get it done.” He said everyone agreed the nursery site was the best option. The former Woolston Outdoor Pool, which sat next to the old Woolston School, was removed in 2006. New Brighton was one of only of a handful of beaches in New Zealand used for organised racing during the early 1900s. But on Saturday they won’t be racing – the bikes will travel along the beach in a parade. The fith annual Smash Palace Bike Show will focus on the late Geoff Hockley, a former bike enthusiast and author. Mr Hockley was a New Brighton identity and a founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club. In the 1960s, Mr Hockley wrote A Tribute to A Gentleman about the history of the club. The event will be linked to the book and Mr Hockley’s son Tony will attend the event. Tony, 82, will be the judge of the ‘Gentleman’s Tribute’ on the day, an award for who he believes is the standout bike and rider on the day. Event organiser Anna May said previous motorcycle shows in New Brighton have been a success. However, this is the first year the bikes will travel on the beach.
