The training of pilots and the resulting high number of takeoff’s and<br />

landings are increasingly perceived as very disturbing by the neighbors<br />

of the airport. Several initiatives around the world try to solve<br />

the issue by using electric airplanes.<br />

Aurora Flight Sciences is an American aviation and aeronautics research<br />

company which primarily specializes in the design and construction<br />

of special-purpose unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).<br />

Founded in 1989, Aurora has a strong heritage of highly efficient aerodynamic<br />

designs and innovative projects including human-powered<br />

aircraft and solar airplanes.<br />

N<br />

An industry veteran in the VTOL arena, Aurora’s first vertical<br />

take-off UAV was known as GoldenEye, but the newly developed<br />

XV-24A LightningStrike is really what catches people’s<br />

attention. LightningStrike was created by Aurora along<br />

with partners Rolls-Royce and Honeywell, and was given the<br />

official designation XV-24A earlier this year. It is funded by<br />

the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)<br />

and is developed for the Vertical Take-Off and Landing<br />

Experimental Aircraft (VTOL X-Plane) program. The first aircraft<br />

designed to demonstrate distributed hybrid-electric<br />

propulsion ducted fans, LightningStrike features an innovative<br />

synchronous electric drive system, tilt wing and canard<br />

Aurora trumpeted the fact that its Aircrew Labor In-cockpit<br />

Automation System (ALIAS) had successfully landed a simulated<br />

Boeing 737. The robotic automated flight control system<br />

uses “in-cockpit machine vision, robotic components to<br />

actuate the flight controls, an advanced tablet- based user<br />

interface, speech recognition and synthesis” to operate the<br />

aircraft. This accomplishment makes readers wonder if an<br />

auto robot arm could land a passenger jet, how easily would<br />

it be able to land a small aircraft?<br />

Aurora’s advantages are obvious: they have experience in<br />

airframe design, autonomous flight control and VTOL. These<br />

three elements are a perfect combo when designing an au-<br />

for vertical take-off and landing, and can achieve high effi-<br />

tonomous eVTOL aircraft. This is perhaps the reason why<br />

ciency in both hover and highspeed forward flight.<br />

A new approach from Switzerland now wants to take the<br />

based on the fully electric Alpha Electro airplane of Pipistrel,<br />
