had 10 points
For girls and boys
basketball, the
months of January
and February are ones that
are to prepare teams for
the grueling end of the
season and hopeful run to
a state title. Many teams
participate in shootouts to
get an opportunity to play
teams they may normally
not get a chance to.
The North Shore’s
shootout, the War on the
Shore, however, means a
little more to the participants.
This Saturday, Jan.
27, will mark the eighth
annual War on the Shore
featuring the boys basketball
teams from Loyola
Academy, New Trier and
Evanston against three
teams from the Chicagoland
area and Midwest.
“When we started this
event, we just wanted to
shine a spotlight on the
North Shore and some historically
good basketball
programs in New Trier,
Evanston and Loyola
and bring in really good
teams,” Loyola coach
Tom Livatino said after
last year’s win over St.
Patrick.
What makes this
shootout different from
others is that it helps a
local charity that means a
lot to the North Shore, the
Danny Did Foundation, a
foundation whose mission
is to prevent deaths caused
by seizures.
Mike and Mariann Stanton
founded the foundation
after their 4-year-old son
Danny died suddenly on
Dec. 12, 2009 in his sleep
after suffering a seizure.
Soon after, his uncle
Tommy, then an assistant
coach with the Loyola
basketball team, joined
Mike, a Loyola grad, and
Mariann and now serves
as the executive director of
the foundation.
In the seven years of
the shootout, the event has
raised nearly $17,000 and
has become a staple for
one Saturday afternoon
of boys basketball on the
North Shore.
Covering last year’s
event, my first War on the
Shore experience, was a
lot of fun because it was
great to see that people of
all different backgrounds
could come together for
a great cause, while also
being able to watch great
basketball.
“Partnering with Danny
Did makes it special,”
Livatino added last year.
New Trier and Loyola will both take part in the eighth annual War on the Shore this
weekend at Loyola. 22nd century media file photo
“Our thing at Loyola is
‘Men for others’ and this
is something that’s more
than basketball and an
organization and a family
that’s special to us.”
This year’s event
features non-North Shore
teams from Geneva, St.
Viator and Detroit Jesuit
from Michigan. New Trier
and Loyola’s opponents,
St. Viator and Detroit Jesuit,
have a combined 25-6
record on the season, so
it should be a good group
