Lake Forest Academy seeks to develop global minds
LFA students come from
near and far — from Chicago’s
suburbs and across
the United States, to
many different countries
around the globe. No matter
where they call home,
students at the Academy
are committed to excellence,
possess a curiosity
about the world, and are
excited to learn in a diverse
school community.
This year’s student body
includes students from
16 states and 40 countries
and territories. Students
of color comprise 30% of
our community, and international
students make up
26 percent.
The Academy’s focus
on globalism stretches
far beyond the make-up
of the student body. The
school places the utmost
importance on helping
its students become better
global citizens. Cultivating
a deeper sense
of global awareness and
understanding is rooted
throughout the curriculum.
Whether in the classroom,
on service trips,
traveling with a class, or
spending a year abroad,
LFA students are encouraged
to widen their horizons
both figuratively and
literally.
Head of School, Dr.
John Strudwick, points
out, “LFA is committed to
the education of character,
ethics, and a value system
based in community, empathy,
and support. The
term ‘Midwestern Heart’
embodies cooperation,
diligence, and an authentic
approach to life. LFA
is also committed to being
a global educational community
that embraces a
diverse group of students
and faculty from around
the world, and, through its
curricular and extra-curricular
programs, encourages
the development of a
‘Global Mind.’
The Stuart Center for
Global Leadership, which
opened in the fall of 2016,
offers co-curricular transformative
global programs
that inspire members of
the LFA community to
apply classroom concepts
to problems in the
real world. The Academy
offers ample opportunities
for students to travel
abroad. This year students
have the opportunity to
travel to Eastern Europe,
Greece, Taiwan, Singapore,
Guatemala, Nicaragua
and Tanzania, as part
of the Spring Break trip
offerings.
Recent graduate, Erin
Snoddy ’17, recalls, “I really
enjoyed all of the opportunities
to succeed and
try new things. Because
of the immense diversity
at LFA, I have become a
lot more culturally aware
and knowledgeable about
the outside world.”
Gow is a college preparatory boarding and day
school, grades 6-12, for students with dyslexia
and related language-based learning disabilities.
Gow provides the right environment and the right
tools for dyslexic students to rethink the learning
process and reinvent themselves.
By combining a structured program and
environment with flexibility, individualization,
and room for fun, Gow provides a rich school
experience. This is precisely what dyslexic
students need to learn.
