Thinking of cooking up a storm this
Valentine’s Day? Try this special recipe,
an easy, creamy and delicious Indian
curry made with prawns... you can even
Method
1. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan or wok,
a lowish heat for 5 minutes, and add the chilli
powder, turmeric and coriander. Cook the
spices for a minute or two.
3. Add the tomatoes, coconut cream and
milk. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15
minutes.
4. Add the lemon juice and palm sugar and
a pinch of salt. Add the prawns just before
serving, as they only take a few minutes to
cook. Garnish with fresh coriander sprigs and
serve.
Tickets to see Freak Power...
Freak Power was originally formed in
the early nineties by Norman Cook, aka
Fatboy Slim, Ashley Slater and vocalist
Jesse Graham.
As the love child of Cook’s Beats International
(‘Dub Be Good To Me’) and Slater’s seminal
cult band Microgroove, their music was a
mix of acid jazz, funk, soul and trip hop. They
recorded their first studio album in Brighton
in 1993, using a combination of tunes adapted
from what was originally intended to be two
albums - the Beats International follow up to
Excursion on The Version and the Microgroove
follow up to The Human Groove.
Freak Power went on to have a massive hit in
the UK with ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’ (used
in a TV advert for Levi’s jeans) and released
two albums, Drive-Thru Booty and More of
Everything for Everybody.
As Cook’s Fatboy career took off, Slater went
his own way and released music under the
alias Dr. Bone. He also produced the Oscar
nominated soundtrack for the Dave McKean/
Neil Gaiman movie Mirrormask (2005) and
won DJ Magazine’s award for Best Dance Track
2006 – ‘Bass Phenomenon’ with Krafty Kuts
and Tim Deluxe.
Fast forward 20 something years, and Ashley is
back with a Freak Power band which features
some of the great original players from early
Freak Power and Microgroove days. At their
powerful, energetic live show on 14 March,
they will play some of their older tunes, along
with material from their new EP release ‘Peace
Through War’.
All you need to do to be in with a chance of
winning this fab competition is to answer the
following question…
WHAT WAS NORMAN COOKS DJ
STAGENAME FROM 1996 TO 2008?
You should email your answer to
hello@bouncemagazine.co.uk before
28-02-18, making sure that you state
your full name and address in the email. You
must also be available to attend on this date.
Check out my new
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 44, a mother and a grandmother.
We all know January can feel like the
longest month ever after Christmas.
People are shopped out,
and are low on inspiration
and feel good factors!
my name on it! Times have changed and
personalisation has become
more available, I now have
loads of bags, jewellery and
clothing with my initials or
name on them.
So when you get to
February things almost
seem back to normal.
Whilst it may still not be
time to have a wardrobe
overhaul, it is always
good to add some colour,
and wow, do I have some
inspiration for you!
I still really love anything personalised.
through.
One site I follow on
instagram ‘SAYWHATYOUC’
make some greatmonogramed
bags.
These are my favourites
along with this
amazingly vibrant clutch
bag. Their make up bags
are fabulous too. Get
on over and have a look
As I have grown up with an unusual
name, I could never find anything with
As well as these I found some amazing
jumpers from GANNI online, which add a
bit of luxury. Wear them with jeans
or smart trousers.
I’ve also recently become a lover
of turbans. Yes that’s right. Think
1940’s movie starlets like Lana
Turner and Laurel Bacall. Look up
‘SARASDOWOPDOS’ she has so
many beautiful designs.
They may not be your bag but
you can’t help admire the beauty
of them. They would definitely
inject some colour and drama to
any outfit. The lovely Zsa Zsa on
instagram is modelling some here.
A great shoe company called
MATILDA ROUGE are new to me
and I fell in love with their style and
boy are they snazzy! Unfortunately
they’d sold out of my size in the
Silver Star Brogues, but they
would have been perfect for
dancing to a bit of Northern Soul!
I love turbans at
the moment and
my new dress
from Javlin
Finally, my favourite new item
of clothing is this leopard print
shirt-dress from JAVLIN in Bury
St Edmunds. It’s a perfect dress
up or down item. I’m looking at
pairing it with these pink ankle
boots from ZARA!
So remember it’s so easy to treat
yourself to something small and
change a whole outfit by doing
so. So go forth and be bold!
Stay stylish - Love Zee x
Valentine’s Day...
Love is in the air this month
and even us ‘non-romantics’
are more likely to make
more of an effort for their
partners on 14 th February.
So, V-Day falls on a Wednesday
this year, what to do?
not take much to boost our partner’s day with little things,
so why don’t we do this more regularly, and not just on
Valentine’s?
Maybe we should do something about this! Remember that
time they brought you back your favourite pack of sweets
for no reason? Or defrosted your car because you were
running late that morning?
Schedule a romantic evening
meal for after work, leave a
present on the kitchen
table?
How about getting in from work to be greeted with ‘I’ve
booked a table for 8 o’clock!’. These are bound to get a
smile. Little things can make a big difference to the daily
routine.
Something to show our
appreciation for our significant
other is necessary on this day.
Even the smallest gestures
(such as remembering a card!)
create a loving mood. It does
When we take a step back its easy to see that we could be
taking our special person for granted. These are the ones
we rely on constantly, for good company, support and
venting to after a long day! After all they are our rocks, and
what would we do without them? Go and make someone
feel extra special!
Hen Party Advice
for a First Time Bridesmaid...
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
So, you been asked to
be a bridesmaid for the
first time and you’re
over the moon!
make sure to keep an eye on the last minute finances in the
days leading up to the hen, as well as on the day.
LIMIT YOUR MONEY WORRIES
Ask your guests to have all their money paid up in advance
rather than fixing you up with the remainder of cash on the day
of the hen.
You can’t wait to watch your bestie
or sister walk up the aisle to marry
the person of her dreams. But first,
you have the not-so-small task of
planning her perfect send-off before
she becomes a Mrs.
So, what do you do now?
TIMING IS KEY
When it comes to organising 15-20 gals all looking at you for
direction, you will be happy to have a schedule down on paper -
just something simple outlining key times and locations.
SORT THE TRANSPORT
A really simple thing to do (but one that often gets forgotten) is
organising transport from A to B - and making sure it’s factored
into the original cost you sent the hens.
Here are some of my top tips for a
Hen party to remember...
KEEP AN EYE ON THE BUDGET
After you’ve sorted out the initial
budget and pricing for the group,
BREAK THE ICE
Get everyone talking with an ice-breaker. This will give everyone
the heads up on who’s who, and get people mixing.
LOOK AFTER EVERYONE
The bride is the lady of the hour, but don’t forget to make a
20
WEDDING
FEBRUARY FEBRUARY 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #64 | #64 WEDDING
fuss of the guests too - you’re the host
after all!
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
We hope that while planning the
party you kept your bride in mind. So
when it comes to the actual hen do,
don’t produce any rude or tasteless
memorabilia unless you know she’s up
for it!
WORK TOGETHER
Most brides have at least two
bridesmaids, so work as a team and
delegate jobs on the day or for the
weekend so that everyone has a role to
play.
What about a party pack?...
First of all find a set of party bags which
go with your selected theme, then you
could add to it...
• Headwear
• A Miniature Bottle of Alcohol
• Badges
• Sweets
• Eyelashes
• Beauty Products
• Sashes
• Mugs
• Dares and Forfeits
• Lip Balm
• Naughty Novelty Items
• Novelty Sunglasses
• Disposable Camera
• Friendship Bracelets
• ‘Survival’ Kits
Now you’re all set to throw your first
(epic!) hen, so enjoy!
Happy Planning...
| COMPETITION
#64
Win a house party at
Maison Talbooth
The prize is worth in the region of £8,000 (depending on the chosen date)
and will be drawn on Tuesday 1st January 2019 at Maison Talbooth.
With the all-important 50th anniversary of Maison
Talbooth on the horizon in 2019, Milsom Hotels
have decided to do something really memorable
to mark the occasion. General Manager Evan
Marshall has always wanted to run a competition
for a house party at Maison Talbooth and
managed to persuade us that it was a great
idea and a perfect birthday present from Maison
Talbooth to one lucky recipient.
The prize includes exclusive use of the hotel and
the 12 bedrooms and all the facilities (outdoor
pool, hot tub, pool house and tennis court) plus
the Treatment Rooms for three hours with four
therapists. On top of this the lucky winner will
also receive the full house party package of
afternoon tea on arrival, Champagne Taittinger
and canapé reception, three course dinner, post
dinner bar and overnight accommodation with
full breakfast.
Any guest who stays at Maison Talbooth during
2018 will automatically be entered into the draw –
so the perfect excuse to stay at the hotel several
times during the year. The prize must be taken
in 2019 so a great way to celebrate a special
anniversary, occasion or birthday or just as an
JEAN-JACQUES BURNEL
Bounce Magazine’s Rachel Ducker speaks to JJ about his time in
The Stranglers and what is in store for 2018...
The Stranglers will be hitting the road again in
March 2018, this time with The Definitive Tour.
With the vast catalogue of material that the
Stranglers have in their recorded arsenal, it is
never easy to decide exactly which songs to
bring together on record or perform live on
tour but, in March 2018, the band will present
their “Definitive” collection. The Definitive
Tour is set to coincide with the planned rerelease
of their first seven albums (six studio
and one live) originally issued on the UA and
EMI/Liberty labels.
As always, audiences can expect to be
swept up high on the wave of the Stranglers’
powerful sound during what is always
an exhilarating live
experience; pounding
rhythms, soaring
melodies, quirky humour
and thrillingly daring
musicianship will come
together again this
March.
One of the UK’s most
exciting, credible and influential British
groups, the Stranglers are riding high on the
crest of a resurgent wave of popularity. They
continue to thrive on the live circuit and their
existing large and loyal fan base has swelled
in recent years as new converts join the ranks.
With record-breaking, sell-out shows and
festival appearances throughout the UK and
the rest of the world, public demand to hear
and see the group has never been so high;
true testament to their considerable musical
talent and the enduring quality of their songs.
Rachel Ducker caught up with JJ Burnel, to
find out about more about the band and their
upcoming performance in Norwich.
R: Hi there JJ... so I’m entering this interview
very carefully as I once read that you used to
strap journalists the Eiffel Tower… am I safe
today?
[laughs] Well, not on a regular basis!
That’s good to hear!
We did do that once though, yes!
At the time it was a bit of a prank
as we were getting hassled by a
certain journalist, so we took him
up to the first floor of the Eiffel
Tower, took his trousers off and
taped him to one of the girders!
R: To be fair, if I was being
hassled I think I would do much
the same, so well done!
Thank you!
R: Going back to the start, how did you get
into the music scene?
I think that’s two questions really… the music...
and music scene.
27

#64
Music – I think anyone growing up in the
UK in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s would have a love
for music, we listen to music, we are a very
knowledgeable country on music, we’ve
created some great bands, musicians and
artists, so I think everyone’s been involved in
music in the UK.
accident, because like all kids, I wanted to
be in a band and make music, but it wasn’t
a life ambition or a career. It just happened
and suddenly I was involved in a bunch of
desperados who could get arrested for
anything. Eventually, ‘The Stranglers,’ after
three years of struggling, hit jackpot.
I started in classical music; I played the
classical guitar at the age of 11. At this time,
I was growing up, becoming a teenager and
listening to everything that was happening,
whether it was the British pop scene, or the
Blues boom or whatever. Of course, at one
time the whole nation listened to ‘Top of the
Pops’ and there was one platform for music,
so I grew up with that.
Getting into the music scene was a complete
R: Where did the band name ‘The Stranglers’
come from?
Oh it’s just a terrible name! At the time, I have
to explain, that when we started out, the only
places we could play were either youth clubs
or pubs, although we where desperately trying
to play support on the university circuit, but
no one would have us.
We often got the plug pulled on us in pubs,
28

we’d then put it back in, they’d call the police
and then there would be a stand off.
So after another one of these debacles, one
night, we got booed off stage and people
wanted to lynch us, and it was a coincidence
that there was a movie about the ‘Boston
Strangler’ by Tony Gurges, this was in the mid
seventies, and one night, I came up with the
name and said “the stranglers have done it
again…” and it just stuck and we thought ok
that’s a name, I mean who had names like that
in those days! [laughs]
R: It sounds like a memorable time?
Well, it was a struggle, but I think I reflect on
it with pleasure, at the time it didn’t seem like
pleasure, but I think of it fondly now.
R: You’re seen by many as an inspirational
and iconic bass player, who were your
influences growing up?
Rachel, I’ve sort of absorbed everything I have
grown up with you know? There was one band
I did like when I was a student, ‘The Doors’, I
really liked ‘The Doors,’ there were loads of
bands I really liked, Peter Green’s ‘Fleetwood
Mac’, but yeah, loads of stuff, no one big
influence really.
R: What was the earliest successful milestone
you remember with the band?
Oh well first of all, having been rejected by
24 record companies, meeting a guy called
Andrew Lauder, who was head of ‘United
Artist Records’. He saw something in us and
persisted, despite coming to a few gigs and
seeing us having pitched battles with the
audience or being shouted off stage, but he
signed us up so that was the first positive…
and the second positive was having our first
top ten single and our album, which stayed in
the top five for a whole year.
favourite song.
Aww, well thanks to your mum for having such
good taste! Do you know Rachel, we really had
to fight to get it released?
R: Really?
R: During your time in the band you have
had 23 UK Top 40 hit singles and 17 UK Top
40 albums, what is the key to your success,
that’s a long time?
[laughs] Well… I would like to think its talent,
it’s certainly not the good press we had in
the early days! We had terrible press. I think
it coloured people’s view of us musically and
I think people judged us on our image more
than on our musical output. I think that’s
changed now as we’ve got a few pieces of
music which come back all of the time. I think
over time people have changed their opinion
of us.
The record company heard it and said, “look
its not punky, its not what people expect from
you, you cant dance to it, its got a unusual
chord and we don’t want to release it”, so
we had to actually enforce a clause in our
contract to make them release it.
So they released it just before Christmas,
thinking it would get drowned in the Tsunami
of Christmas releases and also they wouldn’t
have to invest any money in it, unfortunately
for the record company it developed legs and
grew a life of its own and became a world
wide hit. So then after that the same record
company said, “Can we have another one”?
R: This may be a tough question to ask…
What is your favourite album out of the
seventeen so far?
That is a tough question, because I am fond
of quite a few, some more than others. I have
three really, but its very subjective Rachel.
One is ‘The Raven’ another one is ‘The Gospel
According to the Men in Black’ which is for
most people unlistenable, and another one is
‘Giants’.
R: I guess you’ve recorded these at different
points in your life so it must take you back to
moments in time?
Well, you’ve hit the nail on the head, that’s it,
because that what music does, doesn’t it?
R: Funnily enough, one of your songs ‘Golden
Brown’ reminds me of my mum, it’s her
R: It’s a song that’s stood the test of time.
Yeah, and also it’s a lesson for anyone who is
struggling to go with your instinct, you know,
don’t get swayed by other people, just go with
what you feel.
R: The band has been around for a long time,
but coming into 2018 do you think your
demographic changed?
It has, the demographic has changed
noticeably within the last 12 years since we
released the ‘Norfolk Coast’ album. Up until
then it was people who had grown up with us
from teenagers into adulthood.
When this album came out it fitted in with a
certain Zeitgeist, which also coincided with
people being able to access the past through
YouTube links and with things like the
X Factor. Teenagers started thinking all the
bad press we’ve had and the bad things were
actually badges of honour as now everything
is so sterile and polished.
So a combination of all of those things, there’s
still an awful lot of ‘old bastards’ but yes, also
a new wave of younger people.
Now, I hear we have a mutual interest in
Martial Arts.
I am a 7th dahn, yeah; I trained in Japan three
or four years ago.
R: I expect like myself you have found this
skill useful at times?
R: How do you choose which songs to
perform between the old and the new?
We have so much material to choose from its
always a bit subjective. We try to combine old
with new, and it seems to work.
R: Now that Jet isn’t touring with the band,
do you miss his company?
I miss him! I miss him as a person, yeah,
how could you not? You get on so well with
someone for so many years, and suddenly
they are not there.
He has been less frequent over the last six
years. Three years ago we tried him on one
song and he needed to go to hospital after
that, he’s just not physically able to do it
anymore.
R: Speaking of tours, you are back on the
road in March for a month-long tour that
celebrates their four decades in music and
your playing near us in Norwich on 19th
March…
That’s right at the UEA yeah.
R: What can we expect from the show can
you give away any secrets?
[laughs] Expect the unexpected!
R: Good answer!
Its useful in everyday life, it gives you an
openness… you don’t hide behind anything,
you can be honest with people and it gives
you the confidence to be yourself.
Plus it keeps you fitter, healthier and focused.
Do you know, I don’t get a chance to go to the
dojo or anything but I can still train by myself
which is motivating when your on tour.
R: Do you think it’s helped your career?
It must have yeah, when we’ve had downs
in The Stranglers its put everything into
perspective, it’s given me strength and also
with the physical side of what we do, it’s
helped me.
R: My very last question is do you think there
will be an 18th album?
Well there definitely will be unless I keel over
tomorrow as we are working on one at the
moment, we are hoping to release this in 2019.
R: Well thanks so much for your time JJ and
best of luck with everything to come.
Well thank you for wanted to talk to an ‘old
bastard’.
R: You’re not an old bastard it was my
pleasure.
Very sweet of you – all the best Rachel!
Why don’t diets work?
One of the most popular New
Year’s resolutions is weight loss.
Are you one of many that started
to diet in January? How’s it going?
If it’s not going all that well, you
certainly wouldn’t be the only one!
According to Psychology Today, about 95% of
people who lose weight by means of dieting,
will regain it in 1-5 yeas. So I think it’s safe to
say that if you want to lose weight, dieting
may not be the best way. So why don’t diets
work?
SHORT TERM FIX
Diets are a short term fix. Weight gain and
lose purely boils down to the calories you eat
and use. Eat more calories than you use, you
gain weight, eat less calories than you use,
you lose weight. Over time, most of us will fall
back into old eating patterns and regain the
weight because we still have the same habits
that contributed to the weight gain originally.
ARE YOU AN EMOTIONAL EATER?
Another reason diets have a poor success
rate is because most of us eat for many more
reasons than just hunger. Have you ever
found yourself reaching for the high sugar
or carb food when feeling in a certain kind
of mood? If you have, you’ve experienced
emotional eating. Emotional eating is eating
to fill emotional needs i.e to make yourself
feel better, rather than physical needs i.e to fill
your stomach.
So if you want to lose weight and keep the
weight off, change the relationship you have
with food. All our behaviour has a purpose
and that includes our eating habits, so a good
place to start could be to determine if you are
an emotional eater or not i.e do you turn to
food for comfort, relief, reward or if stressed.
Try keeping a food and emotions diary to help
determine if you do turn to food for emotional
comfort.
your goal.
Express
Yourself!
WHILE YOU PUSH YOURSELF : FUN WAYS TO KEEP FIT!
Getting fit can seem like a bit of a
drag and a chore for many people.
That’s what you want to avoid because when you’re
not enjoying something, you become more likely
to give up at it. As everyone who has tried to get fit
before will know, anything that makes you want to
quit is incredibly damaging. That’s why you need to
find ways to get fit in a way that allows you to express
yourself and push yourself at the same time.
START DANCING...
Dancing is another fun way of expressing yourself and
having a good time. On top of that, it’s incredibly hard
work and your body will be pushed to the max each
time you dance.
COOK UP YOUR OWN CREATIONS IN THE
KITCHEN...
People often don’t realise, but cooking is one of
those things that’s actually really good for yourself.
When you’re able to get into the kitchen and express
yourself when your ideas and culinary creativity, you
will work up a sweat. Just make sure that you have
something healthy to eat at the end of it.
TRAVEL AND EXPLORE...
You’ll have your eyes opened to new and interesting
things. It’s also great for getting fit because when
you’re exploring a new location, you will be doing a lot
of walking as you get about and see what’s on offer.
There is no reason why you can’t express yourself and
have a good time when you’re getting fit and healthy.
BOW
POSE
(don -your-AHS-anna)
Benefits
Stretches the entire front of the body, ankles,
thighs and groins, abdomen and chest, and
throat, and deep hip flexors (psoas)
Strengthens the back muscles
Improves posture
Stimulates the organs of the abdomen and
neck.
Cautions:
High or low blood pressure, Migraine
Insomnia, Serious lower-back or neck injury.
How to try the pose:
1. Lie on your belly with your hands alongside
your torso, palms up. (You can lie on a folded
blanket to pad the front of your torso and
legs.) Exhale and bend your knees, bringing
your heels as close as you can to your
buttocks. Reach back with your hands and
take hold of your ankles (but not the tops of
the feet). Make sure your knees aren’t wider
than the width of your hips, and keep your
knees hip width for the duration of the pose.
2. Inhale and strongly lift your heels away from
your buttocks and, at the same time, lift your
thighs away from the floor. This will have the
effect of pulling your upper torso and head
off the floor. Burrow the tailbone down toward
the floor, and keep your back muscles soft.
As you continue lifting the heels and thighs
higher, press your shoulder blades firmly
against your back to open your heart. Draw
the tops of the shoulders away from your ears.
Gaze forward.
3. With the belly pressed against the floor,
breathing will be difficult. Breathe more into
the back of your torso, and be sure not to
stop breathing.
4. Stay in this pose anywhere from 20 to 30
seconds. Release as you exhale, and lie quietly
for a few breaths. You can repeat the pose
once or twice more.
Deepen the Pose:
You can increase the challenge of
Dhanurasana by performing the pose with
your thighs, calves, and inner feet touching.
Beginner’s Tip:
Sometimes beginners find it difficult to lift
their thighs away from the floor. You can give
your legs a little upward boost by lying with
your thighs supported on a rolled-up blanket.
A partner can help you work on a preparation
for Dhanurasana.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
The Vegan
LOW DOWN
Is it me, or is it the year of the
Vegan? I don’t know about you,
but I’ve lost count of the amount
of vegan related posts
during BY RUBY January. REED
It seems ‘Veganuary’
was definitely a thing!
However, the trend
still seems to be going
strong. So what’s it all
about?
WHAT IS A VEGAN?
Veganism is a type of vegetarian
diet that excludes meat, eggs,
dairy products plus all other
animal-derived ingredients. Many
vegans also do not eat foods
that are processed using animal
products, such as refined white
sugar and some wines. ‘Vegan’
refers to a person who follows
this way of eating.
Sounding impossible? Well hold that thought…
IS IT HEALTHY?
A vegan diet includes all grains, beans, legumes,
vegetables and fruits. Vegans can still eat highly nutritional
and yummy meals! For example, most popular meals can
be converted easily to a vegan version. Take a vegetarian
Thai curry- when this is made with coconut milk it’s vegan
- no meat, no dairy. It’s safe to say that many of our go-to
foods are still on the menu including chips, bread, green
salad, pasta and baked beans!
In addition, many substitutes are available such as; soy
milk, dairy free yoghurts, veggie burgers even vegan free
mayonnaise to help pave the way to the vegan lifestyle.
Like any diet or lifestyle choice it is important not to
exclude a needed food group completely. So as long as you
are sourcing your needed nutrients from a substitute you
can remain healthy.
Well-planned plant-based diets are rich in protein, iron,
48

calcium and other essential
vitamins and minerals. The
plant-based sources of these
nutrients tend to be low in
saturated fat, high in fibre
and packed with antioxidants,
helping fight some of the
modern world’s biggest health
issues like obesity, heart
disease, diabetes and cancer.
BUT IT’S NOT JUST YOU
THAT YOU’RE HELPING…
OTHER REASONS FOR
VEGANISM...
The benefits are for all,
starting with the most
obvious, animal welfare.
Preventing the exploitation of
animals is not the only reason
for becoming vegan, but for
many it remains a key factor
in their decision to go vegan
and stay vegan. Specifics
aside, avoiding animal products is one of
the most obvious ways you can take a stand
against animal cruelty and animal exploitation
everywhere.
AND ANOTHER THING…
Why is meat and dairy so bad for the
environment? The production of meat
and other animal products places a heavy
burden on the environment - from crops and
water required to feed the animals, to the
transport and other processes involved in
getting the product to our plate. A plantbased
diet requires only one third of the land
needed to support a meat and dairy diet as
considerably lower quantities of crops and
water are required to sustain a vegan diet.
Switching to veganism could be one of the
most effective ways to reduce our impact on
the environment.
Food for thought I guess! But are you
persuaded?
Maybe it’s not a lifestyle change you’re
completely ready to commit to. After all it
would take some serious dedication. But if
you fancy making the change just a few times
a week, it all makes a difference.
Chardonnay versus
Sauvignon Blanc
The Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
grape varieties are without doubt two of
the most prominent white grape varieties
in the world.
Indeed they are grown around the world where the climate
plays an important part in dictating the style and flavours
and aromas each have. Chardonnay takes its name from a
village in Maconnais in France.
CHARDONNAY
This is probably the most famous white wine grape and
was the most widely planted, although highly regarded in
Burgundy and California, it produces high quality examples
in areas such as Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Chile and many
other countries.
Chardonnay often adopts malolactic fermentation, to give
it that buttery aroma, as well as the use of oak barrels to
add vanilla and hints of spices. Lees contact in the barrel
contribute biscuity, doughy flavours.
The characteristics include tropical
flavours in the warmer climates
like California, Chile and Australia.
Burgundy, particularly Chablis and
Champagne are much cooler and
lead to green apple aromas. Chablis
was famously unoaked but there
is a trend to using more oak. This
is not necessarily a good thing as
they tend to be like the Cote D’Or
wines which use oak, and lose their
previous style which was so popular.
A good rule of thumb is that
warm climates produce less acidic
wine. To have more acidity if it is
needed, early picking is advised
or acid added. In cooler climates
the challenge is that Chardonnay
buds and flowers early, thus making
it susceptible to frost. In Chablis
particularly they have to employ
braziers in the vineyards to warm the
area and prevent frost forming.
SAUVIGNON BLANC
Originally from the Loire Valley and Bordeaux
in France it is not clear whether there is any
connection with the Savagnin or the Carmenere,
other grape varieties thought to be related.
It is often blended with Semillon to produce a dry
wine with more Sauvignon Blanc, or a sweet wine
with more Semillon.
Sauterne is the most famous sweet wine using
approximately one third Sauvignon Blanc and two
thirds Semillon.
One oddity is that in the 18th Century
it was paired with the Cabernet
Franc (a black Grape) to form
the Cabernet Sauvignon grape,
now the world’s most planted
variety.
The vine arrived in California
in the 1880’s where it is now
known as the Fume Blanc after
the sometimes termed smokiness of
its bouquet. In New Zealand it arrived
in the 1970’s and has been so successful it has
achieved cult status.
Sauvignon Blanc is found in mostly maritime
climates or near to rivers. For example Sauternes
and Entre-Deux- Mers in Bordeaux and the long
Loire River.
Sauvignon Blanc is grown around the world,
with Australia being riper than its New
Zealand counterpart.
Chile also figures highly although
originally confused with
Sauvignonasse a far less important
grape. In Brazil the Seyval Blanc,
grown in England was thought to be
the Sauvignon Blanc, many parts of the
USA have the Sauvignon Blanc as well as
some Canadian plantings.
WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?
How do you choose between these two delightful
grapes when made into wine?
The climates in these parts allows the grape to
develop a balance between acidity and sugar
levels.
A vineyard worker in Australia stated that when he
had finished a hard day’s work in the vineyard, he
preferred a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.
The characteristics of the soils can impart more
factors, for example, the chalk and Kimmeridgeon
clay marl of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume produce
wine of the richest complexity. The wines here as
a result of the flinty soil, have a smoky, gun flint
flavour.
This he said, was due to its refreshing and
herbaceous flavours and bouquet.
However, with a meal, the Chardonnay would be
sometimes better with food, particularly shellfish,
fish and white meats.
Conclusions...
Of course when you have the better quality ones of both varieties then it is more difficult to choose
which one you prefer in either context. Try them both and see which you prefer.
of the project’s volunteers. We can’t wait to revisit
later on in the year to see the progress.
In the cafe, you will find the perfect stop for a
light lunch in a vibrant, Bohemian surrounding.
As we made ourselves comfortable in the cosy
seating area, totally embraced by exuberant
leafy plants, we ordered a ‘Dark and Stormy’
from the cocktail menu… Yes, it was a Sunday
lunchtime, but when your are in the relaxed
surroundings of the jungle it didn’t seem to
matter! They arrived in long glasses decorated
with a bright edible flower… a sign of things to
come!
From the menu we selected the ‘Vegetable
Mezze Platter’ with homemade flat-bread and
the ‘Vegan Jungle Curry’ with sweet potato,
cavolo nero, white beans, ground almonds in a
tandoori spice, served with mango chutney and
popadoms. Both dishes were fresh, flavourful
and the quality of the ingredients shone
through.
We dropped in to sample the lunch menu,
and fear not, if you are conscious about how
many miles your food has travelled you will be
surprised to hear at Urban Jungle its not very
far at all!
New to the site is The Edible Jungle, and the
aim is to provide daily harvests all year round.
We caught up with propagation manager
Niamh, who gave us a tour and an insight into
her vision for the project. Her hope is that The
Edible Jungle can provide the majority of the
cafes ingredients, providing great tasting dishes;
delicious and visually appealing using chemicalfree
vegetables.
There is also a month watering brunch menu
which you can enjoy from 10am everyday. The
full lunch and sharing menu is available from
Midday everyday. Cocktails, wines, beers and
Method
• Put the potatoes in a pan of cold water.
Bring to the boil and simmer for 15-20
minutes, until tender. Drain, then mash.
Vibrant, Tuck into these meat-free
scotch eggs for a light lunch or
pack them into your hamper for a
vegetarian picnic snack.
Packed with potatoes, vibrant
turmeric, black mustard seeds, fiery
chilli and perfectly runny eggs, these
tasty veggie bites are surprisingly
simple to master with this easy
recipe.
Ingredients
• 750g (1 1/2lb) floury potatoes, thick cut
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 shallot, finely sliced
• 1 tsp black mustard seeds
• 1 tsp ground turmeric
• 1 tsp fennel seeds
• pinch chilli flakes
• handful fresh coriander, finely chopped
• 10 eggs, 6 whole and 4 beaten
• plain flour, for dusting
• 1 1/2 x 175g packs golden breadcrumbs
• sunflower oil, for deep frying
• mixed salad, to serve (optional)
• Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying
pan. Add the shallot and gently fry for
5 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the
dried spices and cook for 1 minute more.
Add to the mashed potato with the
coriander and some seasoning; mix well.
Set aside to cool.
• Boil the whole eggs in a pan of boiling
water for 3 minutes for soft yolks. Drain
and cool under the cold tap. Carefully
peel. Divide the mash into 6 and flatten
into discs.
• Mould around each boiled egg until
completely covered. Dust with flour,
then dip in beaten egg and coat in
breadcrumbs.
• Heat the oil in a deep pan. Once it has
reached 170°C on a thermometer (or a
cube of bread browns in 40 seconds),
add the eggs, two at a time, and cook
until golden.
• Remove with a slotted spoon and
drain on kitchen paper. Repeat with the
remaining eggs. Serve warm with salad.
TOP TIP:
Make a meal of the Scotch eggs by serving
with a leafy radish and cucumber salad –
delicious with a mustard dressing.
ALL SAINTS
HOTEL...
By Rachel Ducker
Situated just two miles from the centre of
the historic town of Bury St Edmunds, All
Saints Hotel is perfectly located whatever
the occasion.
Bounce Magazine were kindly invited
along to review a meal at The View
Restaurant and Café. Here’s what we
thought...
“I wasn’t sure what I
was expecting from
All Saints, I once
knew it as ‘the old
golf club’, but not
anymore.
From the moment we stepped into the
modern, newly refurbished restaurant, I
knew we were in for a treat!
Warmly greeted by our waitress for the
evening Lily, we were shown to our table,
which overlooked stunning panoramic
views across the 18 hole golf course.
The innovative layout of the room,
combined with open kitchen and
impressive bar station, all work together to
present a warm and comfortable place to
socialise in.
Not forgetting a large outdoor terrace,
perfect for during the summer months!
As Lily tentatively delivered us our drinks
whilst we browsed the menu, designed by
Head Chef, Steve Windser, we were thrilled
to see plenty of options for all, especially
vegetarians!
The team at All Saints strive to use the
very best locally sourced and seasonal
produce to create culinary delights to
appease diners. With that it mind it was
time for us to order.
“On this particular evening it
was a little chilly, so I wanted
something heart-warming.”
I decided upon the Homemade ‘Mushroom
and Tarragon Soup’ to start, which was
unusual for me, but it jumped out, I think
made the right choice.
The flavours of the Mushroom and
Tarragon were perfectly balanced and it
was served with a large, warm piece of
Homemade Granary bread, notably light.
Whilst I warmed up, my partner Sam
opted for the ‘Beetroot Gnocchi’ served
65

with beetroot puree, roasted beetroot,
Boccocini and basil.
It looked fantastic. The sweet kick of
the beetroot complemented the basil
and none of the flavours were too
overpowering.
To follow, I enjoyed the ‘Porcini Mushroom
Ravioli’ with a cheeky portion of handcut
chips.
I have to say, these were some of the
finest chips I’d hand in a while! (Note: New
Year diet out of the window)!
Sam enjoyed the chefs special Risotto
with all of the best seasonal ingredients
included in it. The rice within the dish
was cooked well. For the non-veggies out
there, you can also have this dish with Pan
Fried Scallops and Crevettes.
We were slightly spoilt for choice when
it came to desert, however, my chocolate
loving fiancé couldn’t resist the ‘Dark
Chocolate Fondant’ with marshmallow and
malted milk Biscuit. Gone in seconds!
I like to round off my meal with a bit of
a palate cleanser so the ‘Warm Lemon
Sponge’ served with lemon curd and a
local raspberry sorbet, was just idea for
me.
When it arrived it a de-constructed lemon
Overall we really enjoyed our evening at
There was a good selection of drinks at
the bar and by the end of our meal every
table around us was full.
NORFOLK...
DID YOU KNOW?
Usually it smells lovely, especially during the
rapeseed growing season but occasionally it won’t
smell quite that luxurious.
There’s a smell in the fields that we all know and are all used
to. It’s called manure but it’s just one of those things that you
expect from living in the countryside. The smell of rain on a
warm summer day is well known throughout the world but in
Norfolk its exquisite.
If the Norfolk dialect is part of your daily speech, you’ll know
what a bishy barnabee is. This is one of those things that
Norfolk folk always use to confuse outsiders and show off just
how different the Norfolk ‘language’ really is. For those of you
not from Norfolk, bishy barnabee is a ladybird.
The Norfolk dialect is very distinct with words that aren’t
widely used elsewhere in the UK. A standard Norfolk accent
is usually fine but you’ll come across someone, usually a
good old boy who is a little more difficult to understand. It’s
very much like Hot Fuzz, where the locals translate the West
Country wordings of local farmers to outsiders.
You will even come across Norfolk dialect in villages
throughout Norfolk used on road signs, with a favourite of
mine being ‘Slow You Down’.
As there is no motorway serving the county, things do slow
down. You’re stuck on 40-60 mph roads with very few dual
carriageways to be seen. Once you’re on a trunk road out of
the county, it can be a lot easy. But you will get stuck behind
a tractor on a road where you just can’t overtake.
Why would you want to leave? Unlike other parts of the
country where people move away for work or university,
people stay in Norfolk. I like to
be of the opinion that it’s far too
beautiful and historic to leave.
Costessey, Deopham,
Fulmodeston, Haddiscoe,
Happisburgh, Mundesley,
Postwick, Reepham, Stiffkey,
Tasburgh and Wymondham
are village names that people
constantly pronounce incorrectly
and this will alert the locals to
say, ‘you’re not from these parts’.
Norfolk isn’t 100% flat. West
Norfolk is relatively flat, and
much of the county is actually
rolling hills and sharp cliff faces.
It’s very easy to get out of
sorts during a walk, more so in
the North Norfolk area. Try to
climb to the top of the gazebo
in Sheringham Park to take a
look upon the rolling landscape,
which was carved by an ancient
glacier. Living in Norfolk you will
at some time became acquainted
with these hills as the young who
explore around the countryside.
Valentine’s
Whatever you have planned for
February 14 th this year, be sure to
make it memorable. It doesn’t have
to cost a fortune or be especially
elaborate, here’s our top five ‘nonlame’
ideas for fun things to do...
1. Exchange mix CDs
This used to be cliche, but nobody uses CDs
anymore, so this is now uncliche. Weird how
the times have changed, right? Create your
own Valentine’s Day love list!
2. Make a simple dinner
Grilled cheese. Spaghetti. Pasta. Restaurants
are incredibly busy (& cliche) on Valentine’s
Day. You know how hectic it can get. Who
wants to wait 60 minutes for a table?
3. Host a Palentine’s Day party
The day to show how much you love your
pals. Ask the girls (or guys) to come over and
bask in the glory of friendship. Eat, drink, and
be merry. Together.
4. Heart shaped pizza
A heart shaped pizza is every girl or boy’s
dream. Do it. They will not be let down.
5. Rent a horror film
Just don’t watch a chick flick. Don’t do it. How
cliche is that? A horror movie is even more of
an excuse to cuddle. Hehe. You clever minx
you.
So go on, make an effort this Valentine’s Day
and show the one you love, just how much
you care.
is that we have launched a new stand at Tesco in
Beccles, in addition to our one in Bury St Edmunds
of the coolest cafés around, Urban jungle. Read all
about their new ‘Edible Jungle’ in the F&D section.
Here too you can also read our food review this
month at All Saints Hotel. We would also like to say
a big thank you to Terry, who took the time to send us a photo of his
Love your
Skin...
Are your skin and body in safe
hands? Are you sure that the
beauty therapist you visit is the
best one for you and are they
actually qualified?
When you visit a beauty salon are you aware
that you are actually putting your body, and
especially your SKIN, the largest and the most
important organ of the body, in the hands
of your therapist. I am sure that when you
want to visit a doctor you make sure that he
is the best in his/her profession? Then surely
you should feel the same way about your
therapist?
Your skin is like the gift-wrap of your body.
Besides that, any problem with your body
or your health, it first reflects on your face.
It is said that, the first impression is the last
impression.
Here are some tips on how to choose the right
salon for you and making sure your therapist
has experienced more than just a day course:
Experience
Always ask for the therapist’s previous
experience.
Good quality products
Check that the products used are of quality; you
have all the rights to which brand products they
use on your skin or what ingredients they contain
and what will they exactly do to your skin. A
good therapist will always be able to explain
the benefits of products with all the active
ingredients of the products.
Price
Shop around. I do not mean to say, go to salon
which offer cheaper services or go to costly
salons. I mean to say where ever you go always
check the reason behind the prices.
Qualifications
Ask your therapist for a list of their qualifications,
if they have done the work they wont be
offended!
Go Natural
THIS VALENTINE’S
CARLA MIREILLE JONES
We associate Valentine’s Day with red…
Red lips are still very in, as well as burnt
orange eye shadows, but how about going
natural this Valentine’s Day?
The one place you don’t want redness is
your skin. I am someone who suffers from
redness, so I know how annoying it can be.
There is good news though; Dior has come
to our rescue! Their brand new
moisturiser helps to fight the first
signs of ageing.
You can now choose from six
different serums, which mix in
with the moisturiser to make it a
quick one step.
The anti-redness serum helps calm down
any imperfections you may have on your
skin leaving your skin flawless! Perfect for
that Valentine’s date!
For a nice natural looking blush, Clinique
Chubby Cream Sticks are great to put
on over a liquid foundation, but before
powder. Giving the perfect blush.
For those who love natural products,
look no further than Rosina’s Lotions and
Potions, this is my friends company so I
know just how natural and amazing these
products are!
As it’s Valentine’s try their ‘Natural
Rose Lip Balm’ not only does it
smell delicious, the ingredients
include honey, beeswax and
healing rose oil with Vitamin E
to smooth those lips ready for
them to be kissed.
Bounce Magazine speaks to Sarah Gare about her extensive line of
natural skin care products…
Shopping for skincare is overwhelming enough as
it is with so many products we buy with our hardearned
cash, but when you want to ensure that the
cleanser you are buying is cruelty-free and maybe
even vegan, you are even more likely to leave the
store with a headache.
If you’re a newbie to vegan skincare, fear not, we
have just the thing for those seeking a ‘clean’ way
of life.
We speak to Sarah Gare about her natural skincare
brand, ‘Funky Skincare’ and the extensive line of
products she has to offer, available to buy online,
from the comfort of your home.
Hi Sarah, thank you for speaking to us. How long
has Funky Skincare been running?
Funky Skincare was launched in 2014. We held a
Health and Beauty Show at the Forum.
How did you come up with the idea for the
business, was there a “light bulb” moment?
One of the reasons for starting Funky Skincare was
that I suffer with Psoriasis, a skin condition that
means I am often prone to flaky patches of skin
that for me appear on my scalp or elbows.
Having suffered with this Psoriasis from an
early age I had worked through all the options
the Doctors could offer with still no solution to
manage the problem.
I was determined to find a natural solution.
After extensive research we discovered a number
of independent brands that produced fantastic
natural products and Funky Skincare was born.
92
FEBRUARY 2018 | ISSUE #64
Does natural and organic mean expensive?
The terms natural and organic are often associated with a
higher price tag.
At Funky Skincare we believe that natural skincare should
be accessible to everyone and as such ensure our products
are always at an affordable price.
How are your products different?
We set a core criteria for our products and we are very
strict, our focus has stayed the same from the beginning,
we won’t deviate from our ethics for a fad product.
This means our products are all natural or organic, never
tested on animals, free from SLS and Parabens with no
nasty chemicals, no microbeas and most important of all -
they must actually work!
How do you operate?
We prefer to work with independent companies rather than
larger corporates as we like to support smaller business
like ourselves as well as bring wonderful unique products
to the wider market. With our name being ‘Funky’ Skincare
our products all have a ‘Funky’ edge to them in one way or
another.
What’s new for 2018?
While chatting to our customers there has been an
increasing demand for Vegan friendly products over the
last two years.
For more information call
01603 322551 or visit
www.funkyskincare.com
Although all our products are never tested on animals we
recognise that there is more that we could do to protect
our planet and animals and are on a mission this year to
ensure our entire range is Vegan friendly. At the moment
around 80% of our range is vegan and in the remaining
products we only have ingredients such as honey and
beeswax.
Veganism isn’t all about the food we eat (as you know)
it’s not a fad diet, it’s a conscious choice of what you
will or will not eat or use. This carries through into our
skincare too so for the ethically conscious we are able to
provide a wide range of options and ways to shop on our
website so that our customers do not feel like they have to
continually check the labels to know if our products fit their
requirements.
As for the ‘Manarola’ the look comes from the Italian Riveria and villages on the North
Just like it used to be…
BUT BETTER!
excitement when you collected the keys
to your first home together? The freedom,
the privacy to do what you wanted when
and where you wanted? The romance and
thoughtful gestures?
We’re already well into 2018 so you
won’t need reminding that time
flies!
A thought occurred to Steve and I recently
about the excitement and adventure of
getting a first home together. About how
life has a habit of taking over, we’re stuck in
‘doing mode’ and the initial novelty quickly
recedes into the dim and distant past.
The future was filled with endless
possibilities, it was you two against the
world.
And then life happened. Careers, the start
of a growing family and extremely long
days which only stopped when you gave in
Whether it’s children, work or both, we
often succumb to the daily grind without a
second thought.
But do you remember that whirlwind of
to (often interrupted) sleep.
Increasingly, today’s ‘middle-aged’ parents
are becoming caught in an unintended
situation between the older and younger
generations.
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY THIS?
In the UK, the majority have increasingly
long, and for the most part, healthy lives.
This has resulted in a ‘aging population
crisis’ where almost a fifth of the
population is 65 or over.
With the scarcity and cost of reputable
Care Homes for the elderly, more and more
families are looking at options to care for
parents in their own homes.
Just when you thought you were an empty
nester!
When it comes to our children, property
prices, coupled with stagnant wage levels
have meant that more and more of our
offspring are staying at home, or returning
to the family home.
Are you working from home and finding
your professional paraphernalia is
conquering room after room? A garden
office could be a perfect solution!
Caring for an elderly relative who wants to
retain independence? Why not consider a
granny annexe? Likewise, this space could
be used as a self-contained space for your
stay-at-home son or daughter (and their
‘stuff’!).
High quality, flexible and long lasting, when
you’re done with those particular needs,
you’ll have a space to do with as you wish.
Meanwhile, there’s a chance to return your
home to, well, your own home! It certainly
worked for us!
Debbie Lamond and Steve Parker are coowners
of Parker Home and have recently
moved their own business headquarters into
a self-designed and built garden office.
You can find out more or get advice on
how to create your own unique space by
calling Bury St Edmunds: 01284 386899
/ Cambridge: 01223 789786 or visit www.
phihome.co.uk.
It’s not uncommon to have children at
home until they’re well into their late
twenties these days, while they save for a
deposit, for example.
This is not the future that most of us will
have envisaged!
SO, WHAT ARE WE TO DO?
For those of us experiencing one, or both
of the examples described above, a great
option is the creation of a new space in
your garden.
SPRING IS IN SIGHT
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Don’t leave houseplants on
windowsills behind the curtains on frosty nights,
especially if your windows are not double-glazed.
This month there are signs of the
approaching spring, with bulbs
appearing and wildlife waking up
as light levels and temperatures
increase.
General
There’s plenty to do indoors this month to prepare
for the season ahead.
Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it’s time
to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as
well as evergreen hedges.
Sowing and planting
Lily bulbs can be planted in pots, for flowers this
summer. After growing on indoors or in a cool
greenhouse, they can be moved onto the patio when
in flower, so that you can enjoy the blooms.
Bulbs coming up in the rock garden or in containers
may benefit from overhead protection from the
rain and snow. A sheet of glass or Perspex placed
on piles of bricks will do the job. Sweet peas can
be sown under cloches, in a cold frame, or in a cool
room in the house.
Any sweet peas that were sown earlier in the autumn
can now be potted.
Top jobs this month:
1. Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some
vegetables under cover
6. Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those
that need planting ‘in the green’
2. Chit potato tubers
7. Prune Wisteria
3. Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and
peaches
4. Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds
off
5. Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished
flowering
109
8. Prune conservatory climbers
9. Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate
overgrown deciduous hedges
10. Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the
winter

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
So it’s February and you’re probably
kicking yourself having already let
the New Year resolution slip?
Well fret not because Action Man is here to
give you another dose of inspiration, this
month it’s in the form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ is a Martial Art that focuses on
grappling and ground fighting that was
developed by the Gracie family in the early
1900’s, which promotes the concept that
a smaller, weaker person can successfully
defend themselves against a bigger,
stronger, heavier assailant by using proper
technique, leverage, and most notably,
taking the fight to the ground, and then
applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat
the opponent.
Now, we all know by now that I’m not
particularly large in stature, so I was keen
to give it a go when and I visited Dynamo
FightSports BJJ team, who train at the Grange
Fitness & Performance Centre in Martlesham.
The group boasts an impressive wealth of
championship winners but are very keen on
introducing beginners to the sport and I was
welcomed with open arms, quite literally...
(more on that later)!
The session started with the important
warm up, particularly for a man who looks
like he swapped his sporting endeavours for
competitive eating over the festive period!
(Note for editor: need a bigger Uniform).
This was followed by a series of drills, basic
112
FEBRUARY 2018 | ISSUE #64
SPORT
movements and sequences that formulate
the foundation of BJJ. The instructors and
experienced members were excellent and very
patient in helping me learn and understand
the actions.
It was time to put all that into practice with
some sparring, as a beginner you’d spend
more time on the drills but Action Man
puts his body on the line for your reading
pleasure! Now it’s fair to say the step by step
in slow-motion is much easier than trying to
remember everything I’ve just learnt whilst
someone is on top of me trying to do to me
what I’m trying to do to them. Here you fully
understand the BJJ methodology, whilst I
tried with all my Might, I could not budge an
inch of the smaller chap who had me pinned.
However, when I faced a larger opponent and
focused on my technique... bingo! Landed the
submission I was looking for. Precision over
power, function over force that’s the BJJ way
and what a great experience it was.
Now, I’ve been Action Manning for almost 5
years and this was one of my most physically
demanding reviews ever, so if you’re looking
for something new in 2018 then Brazilian Jiu-
Jitsu is certainly for you, I know I’ll be back,
not only will it be great for fitness but you’re
joining a family.
Search for Dynamo FightSports BJJ Team on
Facebook and Instagram, then get yourself
down to Grange Fitness & performance
centre, 23 Betts Avenue, Martlesham IP5 3RH
on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 6.30 to
8.30pm and Sunday mornings from 10, tell
them Action Man sent you.
Action Man says: you’ll want to give
BJJ a go, at Dynamo.
I AM GOING TO BE THE RING BEARER...
Is there anything more crowdpleasing
at a wedding than a dog
ring bearer?
Uff… I thought not and it just so happens that
yours truly has been blessed with the honour of
this special task in June.
This made me think, what does it take to be a
doggie ring bearer?
Well, here are my helpful hints and tips if you
are considering giving your little pooch a very
important role during your big day!
MAKE SURE YOUR DOG WON’T CRACK
UNDER PRESSURE...
They would have to not be afraid of crowds, and
at the same time they can’t be bark-y. You don’t
want them whining to get your attention in the
middle of the ceremony! I am perfect of course!
PUT THOSE RINGS WHERE YOUR DOG CAN’T
EAT THEM...
It could happen! A small jewellery bag behind
the bow tie or a ring-bearing cushion tied to your
dog would be useful.
PLAY FETCH BEFORE THE WEDDING...
Make sure you get your dog lots of exercise so
they’re not all wound up.
DON’T LET YOUR DOG GO ROGUE...
Have someone walk them down the aisle on a
lead.
Check out how my custom made wedding
outfit is going on Instagram... follow me
@official_archies_adventures. You can also
keep up to date with my antics on Twitter
@bouncearchie.
PRACTICE WALKING YOU PUP IN LARGE
CROWDS...
Start taking your dog for walks on crowded
streets before the wedding.
GET THAT DOG A BOW TIE…
My mum is making a whole suit just for me! I will
look the part! Cue cute picture (right) >
