Paul Wicks, chairman of Showlite,<br />

the contracting company that<br />

has helped put together and<br />

stage the PPMA Show since its<br />

inception in 1987, tragically passed<br />

away before Christmas.<br />

Paul accompanied the<br />

PPMA on the journey to flagship<br />

UK event over the last 30 years<br />

from its humble beginnings in<br />

Telford. He worked on every<br />

single edition of the show, firstly<br />

as an electrician and for the last<br />

25 years with the company<br />

he founded, Showlite. “We can<br />

certainly attribute the continued<br />

growth of PPMA down in part<br />

to the smooth and seamless<br />

build up on the show each year,”<br />

says PPMA exhibition director<br />

David Harrison who has worked<br />

closely with Paul for all of this<br />

time. “We have shared the same<br />

business values – integrity,<br />

honesty, service and trust – over<br />

the years and we have been able<br />

to completely rely on Paul and his<br />

team to deliver,” he continues.<br />

said Paul was one of the true<br />

gentlemen of the industry and<br />

proof that a successful business<br />

is about the people working<br />

in it. “He inspired loyalty from<br />

everyone he met, his team and<br />

so many people over the years.<br />

“Our thoughts are with his<br />

wife Julie, his children, family<br />

and friends,” he said.<br />

Conference and Exhibition<br />

which takes place on<br />

Wednesday 16 May at Arena<br />

MK, Milton Keynes.<br />

The day will follow a similar<br />

format to the inaugural event<br />

held last year with over 40<br />

exhibitors demonstrating<br />

the latest vision technology<br />

products and services signed<br />

up for a stand so far, and more<br />

than 50 seminars across seven<br />

different presentation theatres<br />

planned. Many of these<br />

exhibitors are new to the event.<br />

“We are putting together<br />

an educational conference<br />

programme which includes<br />

a wide cross-section of<br />

topics with plenty to interest<br />

newcomers to vision as well<br />

as highly experienced vision<br />

engineers and everyone in<br />

between,” says conference<br />

event organiser, Christine<br />

Valdes. In 2017, presentations<br />

involving 3D imaging proved<br />

to be the most popular but one<br />

of the new themes for the <strong>2018</strong><br />

conference is ‘Deep learning’.<br />

Deep learning is one of the<br />

‘hot topics’ in the world<br />

of machine vision just now.<br />

The themes for all seven<br />

presentation theatres are:<br />

Understanding vision<br />

technology, 3D Vision, Deep<br />

The first industry-led event last year proved very popular with the visitors<br />

learning and embedded vision,<br />

Optics and illumination,<br />

Vision innovation, Systems<br />

and applications, and Camera<br />

technology.<br />

Local MP Iain Stewart will<br />

open the event once again.<br />

“I was delighted to be able<br />

to open UKIVA’s inaugural<br />

event in 2017, which proved<br />

to be highly successful and<br />

am very pleased that the<br />

Association has once again<br />

chosen Milton Keynes as the<br />

venue for <strong>2018</strong>’s gathering.”<br />

His opening address will take<br />

place at 9.45am and will be<br />

followed by the first keynote<br />

presentation at 10am.<br />

at the annual Manufacturer<br />

MX Awards. Celebrating the<br />

following a detailed review<br />

of each entrant’s citation by<br />

groups of judges, who visit<br />

each factory in turn to inspect<br />

processes, and interview<br />

management and staff.<br />
