National Glass Centre shortlisted for
the biggest museum award in Britain
National Glass Centre is delighted to have
been shortlisted for the national Family
Friendly Museum Award organised by Kids in
Museums. This award gives families just like
yours the chance to say which museum,
gallery, heritage site, science centre or historic
home in Britain gives the warmest welcome.
The Award is the biggest museum award in
Britain – and the only one where families pick
the winner!
The popular attraction, which is part of the
University of Sunderland, aims to inspire
people to find out about both traditional and
contemporary glass making and its heritage
links with our city. The iconic glass building,
overlooking the River Wear, invites more than
200,000 visitors each year to explore its
exhibitions, glass blowing demonstrations,
creative experiences and family activities for
all ages.
Keith Merrin, Director, National Glass Centre
said; “It is very important to us as a visitor
attraction to be fun and welcoming for all
families. We want all of our visitors to feel at
home in the centre and feel inspired to learn
about and participate in our hands on activities
to make beautiful art. Therefore this is brilliant
recognition for everything we do here at the
centre, especially for local families. We’re very
proud to have been shortlisted for this award
from so many fantastic entries.”
The centre really does have something for
everyone offering everything from arts and
crafts workshops to unique hot glass
sandcasting experiences your whole family can
enjoy. There’s always loads’ going on at the
centre and all of the events for this season can
be found in the ‘If it’s on it’s in’ section.
National Glass Centre will be in the running
with a number of other hopeful entrants from
across Britain, the winner will be announced at
an award ceremony at the Wallace Collection in
London on Monday October 17. Fingers
crossed for this unique local attraction.
