The parade will leave
the Civic Centre at
Burdon Road at noon
and everyone is
being asked to turn
up and join in the fun
– and dress up.
“Because we’re having a
Hairspray theme it would be
fantastic if people dress as
characters from the show”
Sunderland does
it with Pride….
Big, bouffant and backcombed- this year’s Sunderland Pride is taking
its theme from one of the most fabulous musicals ever written.
The event is returning to the city on Sunday 25
September for the sixth time, with the hope that
it will beat last year’s record-breaking 6000
strong turnout.
And organisers have taken the show Hairspray
as their inspiration, which includes a
performance by Leanne Jones, who won an
Olivier Award for portraying the musical’s
leading lady, Tracy Turnblad, in the West End
production.
Leanne is just one of a whole host of singers
who will ensure that Sunderland Pride is a
star-studded event.
Tribute acts Beeyonce, Boy Geordie and
In the Mix will take to the stage along with
Kelly Wilde and former X Factor star, Kitty
Brucknell, plus the Leeds Starlets.
The event runs in and around Park Lane,
with performances running from 1pm until
7pm along with the Pride parade where
once again, the hope is for record numbers.
The parade will leave the Civic Centre at Burdon
Road at noon and everyone is being asked to
turn up and join in the fun – and dress up.
“Because we’re having a
Hairspray theme it would
be fantastic if people
dress as characters from the
show,” said Chris Ramsay, chairman
of Sunderland Pride.
The parade is expected to take about an hour
and once at Park Lane the Pride flag will be
raised and the music will start!
“This year we are also having a number of floats
as part of the parade and one dedicated
completely to Hairspray,” said Chris.
“We’ll also be playing music from it
throughout the day. We had a
fantastic Pride last year but by
the support and response
we’ve had so far, we really
think this one is going to
be the best Sunderland
has ever had.”
It will be the culmination of a
year of successes for
Sunderland Pride – which relies
totally on sponsorship and donations – with
the team moving into their own office at Bridge
House in the city.
This means that they can now run more
extensive services to meet the needs of people
across Sunderland.
