CHILDREN ACROSS Canterbury
received a Christmas surprise in the mail
– a personalised letter from the big man
in the red suit.
The letters from Santa Claus travelled all
the way from the North Pole to children
in Canterbury.
The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and
Nursery in West Melton was one of
thousands of pre-schools and primary
schools in New Zealand to receive the
letters.
Children from the pre-school’s
inventors, adventure and navigator
classrooms had their letters handed out at
its Christmas concert.
With a bit of help from New Zealand
Post, Santa sent about 73,000 letters to
children from 1102 schools and early
childhood education centres across the
country.
The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and
Nursery owner Tracy Summerfield said
the children were “blown away” and
appreciated the nice gesture from New

deputy head, will bring a varied
background to her new position

She trained at Exeter University
School of Education after finishing a
law degree at the iconic Oxford University
in the United Kingdom.

racing cars and rugby-themed toys
were popular requests made to Santa by
children at the pre-school.

were common requests from children
nationwide.
But as Santa reminded them in his
letter: “Christmas is more than just about
presents. Its about celebrating with your
friends and family.”
New Zealand Post has been helping
letters get to and from Santa for the past
19 years.
A New Zealand Post spokeswoman
said it wanted to bring joy to people at
Christmas and help keep the magic of
Santa alive.
“Receiving a letter from Santa is a
magical moment for a child and being
a postal business we can play a role in
facilitating that moment,” she said.

She then began her 25-year teaching
career in the independent schools’
sectors across the UK and New
Zealand.
“It is a privilege to be entrusted
by parents with the task of providing
their child with the essential
foundation for their education, their
foundation for life,” Ms Tattershaw
said.
She is also a keen sportswoman,
having played hockey and water
polo up to international level in her youth.
She is now kept busy as senior coach with
the Harewood Hockey Club.
