Following the EFMC-ASMC’17, the 4 th edition
of the EFMC Young Medicinal Chemist
Symposium (EFMC-YMCS 2017) took place
at the University of Vienna on Thursday
August 31 and Friday September 1, 2017.
The 4 th edition was an immense success, with
a record participation, confirming the interest
of Young Medicinal Chemists for this series
launched in 2014 in Lisbon, and followed
by Antwerp and Manchester. The Symposium
kept its duration of one and a half day, and
was filled with excellent talks from keynote
lectures given by inspiring leaders, and oral
communications given by young Medicinal
Chemists.
More than 160 attendees stayed in Vienna
to enjoy the inspiring talks of both Christoph
Boss (Idorsia, CH) who lectured on “The
Fascinating World of Medicinal Chemistry
and Drug Discovery”, and Peter Nussbaumer
(Lead Discovery Center, Germany) who talked
about “Challenging Medicinal Chemistry!”
Public’s Choice Prize sponsored by Roche for
his presentation on “Building-up Molecular
Complexity with Carbenoids: New Vistas in
Homologation Chemistry”.
The networking reception, coffee breaks
and poster sessions offered the participants
the opportunity to discuss the posters and
the lectures, and to share their science with
peers – in a young and dynamic way. Many
of them acknowledged the high quality of the
meeting, built by and for young Medicinal
Chemists with the help of a motivated committee,
and the kind support of the EFMC, the
University of Vienna and Industrial Sponsors.
The EFMC-YMCS series will celebrate its 5 th
anniversary in 2018, taking place in Ljubljana
(Slovenia) on September 6-7, 2018 as satellite
event of the XXV EFMC International
Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC-
ISMC 2018). More information will be available

The rest of the programme was split between
14 oral communications by invited prize winners
from National Young Medicinal Chemists
meetings in Europe, 4 oral communications
from submitted abstracts, 20 flash poster presentations
and more than 100 posters!
At the end of the event, the traditional award
ceremony was held, and the three prizes
were conferred to promising young scientists.
Daniel Merk (ETH Zürich, CH) received the
EFMC-YMCS Presentation Prize sponsored
by the EFMC and Idorsia for his presentation
on the “Facing Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis
with Multitarget Compounds”. Matthieu
Place (ICOA CNRS, FR) received the EFMC-
YMCS Poster Prize sponsored by RSC &
Molecules for his presentation on “Design of
Novel Imidazopyridazines as Strong Haspin
Inhibitors”. Finally, Vittorio Pace (University of
Vienna, AU) was awarded the EFMC-YMCS
