So when one fires a broadside it pays to take notice (see page 1). Akaroa Yacht Club commodore Howard Wilson wants freedom campers banned from the village. I suspect he has many supporters. It’s similar to what Queenstown has implemented; banning freedom campers from some areas in the tourist haven. Wilson has had enough of what freedom campers leave behind. He will make a deputation to the Banks Peninsula Community Board later this month. He had originally planned to speak about the need for better enforcement. On the basis of that we’ve canvassed the board members for their views. Some have answered; others haven’t responded. Wednesday February 7 2018 News Rubbish bin clearing • By Sarla Donovan RUBBISH BINS will be emptied twice a day in the Sumner area after the city council was criticised for failing to keep up with clearing rubbish bins. The bins were previously scheduled for one collection per day, Sunday-Friday, and two on Saturday. However, scorching temperatures drawing people to the beach put pressure on the bins – leading residents to speak out. Now an evening collection has been added to the daily schedule, which includes Taylors Mistake. City council acting head of parks Brent Smith said there had been an increase in rubbish volumes. Its contractor had collected 20 per cent more rubbish when compared to the same period last year. As well as the extra collections, the city council was investigating other changes. “We’re looking at the number and style of bins we provide and we are also looking at improved signage to inform and encourage appropriate behaviour,’’ Mr Smith said. The money will go to the Allandale Reserve Management Committee to be spent on the reserve. SKATE PARK OPENING SOON The upgraded Lyttelton skate park is on track for a February 26 opening. The $375,000 site upgrade has been funded primarily by the city council – with some financial support from South Port in Bluff. Work began in November and when complete, the park will feature a new bowl, a quarter pipe, ramps, rails and edges, and a fresh “side-to-side flow.” HIGH FIRE RISK The fire risk remains high after Christchurch sweltered through the hottest January on record. NIWA’s monthly climate summary showed the city recorded a mean temperature 2.7 deg C more than the normal. Dry conditions and a further month of summer heat are keeping fire authorities on high alert.
