From the Rabbi’s Study
by Jerome P. David, D. D.
November 2017 Heshvan/Kislev 5778
A true story. A touching story about a bus that was bumping along a back road in the
South.
In one seat, a wispy old man sat holding a bunch of fresh flowers.
Across the aisle was a young girl whose eyes came back again and
again to the man’s flowers. The time came for the old man to get off.
Impulsively he thrust the flowers into the girl’s lap. “I can see you
love the flowers,” he explained, “and I think my wife would like for
you to have them. I’ll tell her I gave them to you.” The girl
accepted the flowers, then watched the old man get off the bus and
walk through the gate of a small cemetery.
When I shared this story with our 10th grade students and asked
them what the story meant to them; they offered the following insights.
One student felt it speaks to random acts of kindness that she and her family also
try to carry out.
Another felt that the essay is an affirmation of life, that it emphasizes the living, the now
and how we best remember the deceased by serving and loving the living. Still another
10th grader felt that Judaism is all about our acts and deeds and the opportunity to
perform Mitzvot surrounding us daily.
Overall, these are inspiring messages as we begin the New Year 5778. Wishing you and
your family health, fulfillment, success and joy in the coming year.
Professional Letter from Staff, Temple Board Emanuel’s & Group President, Contacts Jessica Manelis
As a huge social media nut, I am all about what is trending.
So, I was thrilled (and honored) to be able to bring Dr. Ron
Wolfson, author of the book, Relational Judaism: Using the
Power of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community,
to speak in a private session with myself, members of the
executive and general boards and the TE staff.
Now you might be saying to yourself, “six months in as
president and she’s lost her mind”. Because really, what’s
so trendy about that? Well, I am sure you have heard the
expression, “everything old is new again”. The concept of
relational Judaism isn’t new. It was the culture of
synagogue life for our parents, grandparents and
great-grandparents. Shuls were smaller and Jews tended
to live near them. Everyone knew everything about
everyone. But progress and growth took small and personalized and turned it in to super
sized and generic and our culture shifted to “I want more, I want it all and I want it now.”
I’m bringing it back, and I am turning the paradigm on its head. I am envisioning a new
approach that begins with engaging you in a personal relationship with other congregants and
Judaism. The current model of belonging to a synagogue isn’t working. How do I know?
Because, you’ve told me. I’ve heard you. You’re not connecting.
Let’s fix that.
Experiences are the trend through which I hope to successfully engage our congregants. But
we need to do it together. So, throw on your 70’s plaid jumpsuit and velvet jacket and let me
know what speaks to you.
Professional Our B’nai Mitzvah Staff, Board & Group Contacts
Our B’nai Mitzah
Matthew Bernard, son of Cynthia & Mark- October 7, 2017 Bar Mitzvah
I’m Matthew Bernard. I am a Carusi Middle School honor roll student. I have been
playing basketball since I was 6 years old. When I’m not on the court I enjoy
watching all the Philadelphia teams; especially the Sixers. I also play the drums and
I’m a part of the Carusi Concert Band. I live in Cherry Hill with my parents, my
older brother Aaron and our black lab Max, whom we adopted. I’m an animal lover
and committed to making a difference in the lives of animals in our community, that
is why as my Mitzvah project I chose to volunteer and hold a donation for the VAO
(Voorhees Animal Orphanage). They are an adoption shelter and operate to meet or
exceed a 90% live outcome rate (no-kill shelter). They also provide individual care
for animals and their families. Please remember to adopt and not shop for your pets.
You will save a life.
Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is very meaningful and inspiring to me. My Jewish identity has been
reinforced during this time and I am proud of my heritage. I would like to thank my parents, Aaron
and my grandmother Tutti for all their love, support and guidance. I also want to extend a huge thank
you to Morah Tsippi for all her caring ways as she helped me prepare for my Bar Mitzvah and Morah
Joe for his teachings and kindness. I would also like to thank Rabbi David and Cantor Neil, they have
always inspired me and have set an example with their kind words, patience and support. I am really
looking forward to my special day and celebrating with my family and friends.
Joseph Perlman, son of Beth Perlman - October 14, 2017 Bar Mitzvah
Hello, my name is Joseph Perlman. I am a 7th grader at Rosa International Middle
School. I live in Cherry Hill, with my Mom, Beth. I volunteer at the AWA in
Voorhees and love to play video games. One of the Mitzvah projects, I have taken
on is Ride Hard Breathe Easy. This organization is raising money for Lung Cancer
Research. A family friend, John Matthews, is riding his bike from Pennsylvania to
San Francisco, California. He will leave on August 24th and will arrive in San
Francisco on October 14, 2017. My Bar Mitzvah Day! Celebrating my Bar Mitzvah
means, I will now be considered as a Jewish adult. Thank you to everyone that helped
me with my special day!
Jacob Nickel, son of Wendy & William Nickel - October 14, 2017 Bar Mitzvah
Jacob Hudson Nickel is an 8th grader at Beck Middle School. He
enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and flag football. Jacob is excited
to become a bar mitzvah as it means he is becoming a Jewish adult.
His Torah portion, Noach, is teaching him how to be righteous or
to “do the right thing”. Jacob’s mitzvah project is collecting new
and gently used sports equipment for an organization, Let’s Play
it Forward. This organization distributes the equipment to poor
and underserved communities. Jacob lives in Cherry Hill with his
brother, Bennett, his sister, Harper, his gecko, Sheldon, and proud
parents, Wendy and Willie.
Our B’nai Mitzvah
Drew Greene, son of Jennifer & Robert Greene - October 21, 2017 Bar Mitzvah
Drew became a Bar Mitzvah on October 21st 2017. Drew is in the 8th grade at
Beck Middle School where he has been on the middle school basketball team
since the 6th grade. Drew also plays AAU and travel basketball in the spring
and winter seasons. Drew also enjoys cooking and spending time with his
family and friends.
“Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is an important milestone in my life. It signifies the
transition from a boy to a man in the Jewish religion. I know that becoming a
man also brings with it more responsibility and accountability which I will take
very seriously. I will do my best to honor this very important Jewish tradition.”
His mitzvah project is called “Dunk Your Kicks.” Which collects discarded sneakers and then sells
them to an international recycler of affordable clothing; each pair of sneakers receives up to $1.00.
That money is then used to provide financial support to low income and military families who have
children battling cancer.
Additionally, he donated a portion of my Bar Mitzvah money to the Stephen Mulderry Memorial
Fund, which donates 100% of its proceeds to inner city athletic leagues and educational scholarships.
Stephen was the best man in my parents wedding and died on September 11th in the terrorist attacks.
His name and his memory live on forever in our family. We love you Stephen!
Our B’nai Mitzvah
Ethan Levy, son of Jennifer & Scott Levy - October 28, 2017 Bar Mitzvah
Ethan is currently an 8th grader at Voorhees middle school where he enjoys
wrestling, track, scuba diving, traveling, playing with his dog George and hanging
out with friends. Becoming a bar mitzvah signifies that he is entering the adult
world. As his mitzvah project, Ethan spent time at an under privileged school in
Philadelphia. His time spent there made him appreciate how fortunate he is to
go to school in Voorhees. He felt good giving back to children who don’t have the
same privilege that he does.
Samantha Levy, daughter of Jennifer & Scott Levy - October 28, 2017 Bat Mitzvah
Sami is going into the 7th grade at Voorhees middle school this year. She enjoys
swimming, soccer, socializing with her friends and taking vacations and trips.
Sami also enjoys playing with her dog George. Sami’s mitzvah project was to help
underprivileged children in a school in Philadelphia, where she helped set up
classrooms for the upcoming school year. Sami is looking forward to becoming a
bat mitzvah as she worked hard to learn her torah portion.
Rachel Squire, daughter of Melissa & Derek Squire -October 28, 2017 Bat Mitzvah
My name is Rachel Lily Squire. I live in Voorhees, New Jersey, and I am a 7th
grade student at Voorhees Middle School. I live with my Mom, Dad, and
brother, Jacob. I enjoy participating in activities like theater, basketball, baking,
and lacrosse. I love my friends and family more than anything.
I am becoming a Bat Mitzvah on October 28, 2017. For my mitzvah project, I
volunteered at the Animal Welfare Association, which operates the oldest clinic,
adoption center, and no-kill animal shelter in South Jersey. I chose to do this
because I love animals and want to help them. I have been helping out at the
shelter by clearing the trails and doing laundry and dishes. I also participated in the Paws and Feet
5K Race with my team of supporters to raise money for the Animal Welfare Association.
Becoming a Bat Mitzvah is a great honor and celebrates everything I have learned and accomplished
to reach this day. I am excited to be accepted into the Jewish community as an adult, and I can’t wait
to share my Bat Mitzvah with my friends and family.
Volunteer of the Month: Shari Douglass
How long have you been members of TE? Where are
you from and where do you live now? We’ve been
coming to TE since Ruthie was two years old, so 14 years. I
grew up right here in Cherry Hill, and we live in Voorhees.
Who makes up your family? My husband, Kevin, our
16 year old daughter, Ruthie, our 8 month old puppy,
Emerson, two cats – Pandora and Hercules, and I live in our
house; but our family is so much bigger than that! We are
blessed to have my parents living nearby in Cherry Hill,
special friends that are truly family-by-choice in our lives,
my sister’s family is in Marlton, and Kevin’s family, although
much farther away, is always close in our hearts.
Volunteer of the Month: Shari Douglass
What do you do? I am a public elementary school teacher in
Deptford Township, and have been for over 20 years. I spent
about 17 years teaching 6th grade, and I have currently been
teaching 4th grade for several years.
I have taught here, at TE Hebrew High, grades 7 through 12
for the past 12 years or so, and counting.
What do you do for fun? I like to take photos and scrapbook; I like to read; I love to shop. Most of
these hobbies take extra hours in the day and extra money in the bank. Truthfully, I enjoy myself the
most when I am with my family and friends, laughing and making the most of our time together.
What is your favorite Thanksgiving recipe? It is absolutely a tie! My mother’s string bean
casserole. My grandmother’s sweet potato casserole. My mother-in-law’s pecan pie.
In what ways do you volunteer at TE? I serve on the Ritual Committee; through that I end up
volunteering for various events and festivities throughout each year. I have always helped at our Just
for You in Support of Special Needs Services, and as of the end of last year, I took over as Chairperson.
I am beginning to work with the Jewish Abilities Alliance on TE’s behalf. I plan and lead our Tween
Program for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur each year. I have served on various task forces
throughout my time at TE – Rabbi Searches. Educational Task Forces, and others; there’s always more
to do, and so often, you see the same people doing it over and over again. If only I could quit my day
job and spend more time at TE!!
What was your most memorable TE moment? I have literally watched my daughter grow up at
TE, since she was about 2 years old, so there are many memorable moments to choose from. But
truthfully, a very simple memory comes to mind. Ruthie was in Kindergarten, I think, and we were
driving to TE for one of many events. She was making up a song for herself in the backseat, as she
often did, and then she ended it with, “I love being Jewish!” I knew we were doing something right,
and that Temple Emanuel was part of it. I hoped that she would always feel that way. A decade later,
I know she does!
What are you looking forward to in the next 12 months? This year, we are beginning the
exploration of colleges for Ruthie – it is an exciting and bittersweet time. I look forward to sharing the
moments with Kevin as we guide her through her choices and decisions.
“Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making
a difference.” Kathy Calvin, CEO and President United Nations
Foundation
Temple Emanuel Sisterhood is an amazing group that provides much
support to Temple Emanuel itself and local, national and international
communities as well. We are a living example of Tikkun Olam—
repairing the world. Here are the highlights of our efforts for the
calendar year 2016-2017.
Of great importance is the support given to our own congregation.
Sisterhood backs many religious school programs through the Ahavat
Limud Fund, purchases the Consecration Torahs, provides religious
school treats throughout the year (apples and honey, etc), gives an 11th grade Confirmation
Scholarship, and helps fund the spring high school trip. Sisterhood has made a commitment
to the Emunah campaign and provides for the Rabbi Good Works Fund. In cooperation with
Men’s Club we also support the local Reform Mikveh. To address the needs of those affected
by Hurricane Harvey, Sisterhood made an immediate donation to Nechama, an organization
committed to the Jewish response to natural disasters in the US.
Temple Emanuel Sisterhood
Charitable organizations beyond TE are chosen to receive financial support in the fall of each
year. This year we carefully considered and chose seven organizations to receive a monetary
donation. These organizations are: HIAS, heart2heart, Anti-Defamation League, Women of
the Wall, Julia’s Grace Foundation, Heroes to Heroes, and Center for the Arts in Southern NJ.
By giving to a variety of foundations
Sisterhood helps in a small way to change
the world we live in. Tikkun Olam is alive
and well in the TE Sisterhood mind set.
When you join Sisterhood and support our
events and fundraisers you become a part
of this noble Jewish value.
The Henry Raich Social Club Mindful Matters
Let’s Have a Conversation About Starting a Conversation
By Stephanie Welder
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt anxious entering a room full of people you
don’t know, or, perhaps, meeting someone new for the first time? Has that feeling gotten in
your way of facing some new situation causing you to avoid it all together? It’s not very
uncommon to avoid situations when those feelings become too uncomfortable.
Here are some tools from experts on how to move beyond those feelings and start a
conversation with someone new.
Be Prepared: If you’re headed to a party or business function where small talk is called for,
think of 5 things you’d like to share with others and create lead-in lines.
“What sports do you follow?” No matter how they answer you can follow up with more
questions. If they don’t care for sports, you can always ask what they enjoy. In work
situations, “Tell me about your job”. “What service do you provide? “ What do you like
about it?”
Ask questions that require a detailed answer. Yes or no responses are conversation killers.
Here are few tried and true starters for networking, parties or introductions:
“Where did you grow up?” Refer to the refreshments. “What is your favorite pizza
topping?” “What’s the best thing that happened to you this week?” Take a look at
Celeste Headlee’s TED Talk on better conversations
The objective of conversation starters is to get the ball rolling. Being prepared can give you
the confidence to enter that room knowing you can walk up to anyone and begin a friendly
conversation, instead of facing uncomfortable silence and looking for a way to gracefully and
finally exit.
As always, the Mindful Matterz members are here for you if you need any assistance and
support. Contact us and we will get you pointed in the right direction! David at
rubenstein4@verizon.net and Judy at jaf214@comcast.net. Please join us at our next meeting,
Thursday, Nov 16, 7pm.
The Henry Raich Social Club
Wednesday, November 15 -- Kevin Riordan is our our guest speaker. Mr. Riordan has been the
South Jersey Columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer since 2010 and has had a nearly 40-year career
as a newspaperman. In these days of so many questions with and about the press, don’t miss this
presentation. Mr. Riordan will talk about how newspapers have changed, especially in South Jersey,
since he began his career. He continues to write stories of the South Jersey community, its people,
and its issues. Bring your lunch and come and enjoy a special afternoon.
10
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 20. Renee Robbins will introduce us to the
remarkable American Master blacksmith and metal designer Samuel Yellin. Watch for more
information to follow.

When your Amazon package arrives, you can’t wait to rip open the box and get to
the contents. In the developmental world of Early Childhood Education, boxes are
just as exciting when they are empty. One of the Pre-school’s annual programs is
Carton Day. It was instituted by Morah Audrey Litto when the Pre-school at
Temple Emanuel opened twenty-five years ago. It hasn’t changed one bit since it
was great then and continues to be one of the best events each year!
Another annual event that has taken different forms each year is the Thanksgiving
We look forward to sharing this special celebration of friendship and gratitude with our students and
What is Jewish gratitude all about? So many things! In Judaism hoda’ah means
gratitude or being thankful for what we have. There’s also a phrase, hakarat
hatov, which extends beyond simple gratitude to “recognizing the good” all
around us. Hakarat hatov is something kids often practice naturally when they’re
little. For babies, everything is new and everything is amazing! As kids grow
older, it’s hard to keep that sense of wonder. Modeling gratitude and practicing
hakarat hatov helps children (and us grownups) remember to be thankful for
things in our life beyond material possessions. Understanding that everything
really is amazing helps all of us stay grounded, thankful, and healthy.
Dr. Ron Wolfson’s Superpower #9 discusses how to give thanks. You can give thanks from the heart
which means giving with love. You can also give of yourself, meaning giving your time to help the sick
or making people feel good. Try using one of the following of God’s superpowers to give and be
thankful for your good deed...
techerryhill
*Give someone a book you love
*Give of your time and volunteer
*Give tzedakah when you can
*Give away your old clothes and toys
Always give from the heart and be thankful! Wishing you joy, happiness, and a love of learning
TEFTY has had an amazing year so far. Our new youth advisor, Yana, has helped TEFTY and our other
youth groups get off to a wonderful start with many fun programs and services. As the year continues
we have many more fun events planned. In the coming days, there is TEFTY movie night on
November 4th. This event is just a way to lay out, relax with your TEFTY (or non-TEFTY) friends and
watch a movie. There will be snacks, but the movie that we will be watching will be announced
eventually. So make sure to register for this relaxing, yet fun event. Additionally, TEFTY is looking
forward to NFTY-PAR Fall Kallah which will be held November 17-19. This event is held at Camp
Harlam and it is regional for jewish teens in grades 9-12 in the Pennsylvania area. It will be an amazing
opportunity to meet new friends, and see old ones, while also discussing hot topics during interactive
teen led programs. It is an amazing experience so do not miss out and make sure to register! Another
opportunistic event that is coming up is TON, formally known as NFTY-PAR’s JYK event. It is open to
6-8 graders and is held at Camp Harlam. It is an amazing event that allows middle-schoolers to get a
Taste Of NFTY (hence the new name). New friends are always made and it is a promise to participate
in fun and inspiring programs throughout the weekend. The event runs from December 1-3. You’ll
even see me (TEFTY’s very own Social Action VP, Shaina Kramer) there to help run the event! I
definitely recommend going, you will not regret it! The entire TEFTY board has been working
extremely hard and are ecstatic for future events. We try to make them fun, engaging and rewarding.
We are beyond excited for the month of November and future, and hope to see new faces at every
event.
Happy November!
I always associate November with GRATITUDE.
We have so much to be grateful for. Sometimes its for a big reason and sometimes its
just that I was lucky enough to wake up this morning. If you are reading this article, then
I see you were lucky today too. It is an honor to be the person you trust to keep our TE
tradition of healing the world and giving back, but I am most grateful for all that you do
to support all of our ideas and programs. We are nothing without you.
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE: We are collecting turkeys, side dishes and
desserts that go into creating Thanksgiving feasts for approximately 300 families. We
will be collecting all month. On November 19 at 4:00 pm we will sort and pack these items
at TE for the following organizations: JFCS, CAMCARE, DUDLEY SCHOOL, TE FAMILIES,
DUBIN HOUSE, NEW LIFE MINISTRIES CHURCH IN CAMDEN, and CHERRY HILL
FOOD PANTRY. Someone from each organization will pick them up on Monday and
distribute them to the families they are working with.
Here is how you can support this program: Send food to CRAM THE VAN day at
TE by purchasing an extra case of food at your convenience and drop it at the office.
This is a wonderful, meaningful, fun way for anyone at any age to get involved.
For youngsters and those who love to color - We also have Thanksgiving cards to color
for each meal we pack while we are sorting and packing food on November 19th.
HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE: Every year we provide holiday gifts to
JFCS, COVENANT HOUSE, BANCROFT, VOORHEES PEDIATRIC, TE MEMBERS
in need and ROBIN’S NEST. When we receive the wish lists from each of the following
organizations, we create a list at TE and invite everyone to adopt a person, a family, seniors,
or children for the Holiday Gift Drive. There are many people in need and we know that
everyone wants to get involved in some way. Please reach out to me so I can help match
you up with who you feel most comfortable to purchase for. A VERY special Thank you
to Beth Hurwitz and Sam Dutkin for ALL of the behind the scenes magic
they do to make this happen.
Thank you for making our
HIGH HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE a MAJOR SUCCESS.
Together, we have made a huge difference in supplying
food to the JFCS Food Pantry.
All of your DOLLARS went to:
1) Gift Cards sent to Areas that have been recently
devastated by hurricanes and other natural disasters.
2)Our Rabbis’ Good Works Funds for our
congregational families in need.
3) Lotem, an Outdoor Program in Israel for
children,with special needs.
Thank you to Steve Meller for his most appreciated
truck to hold and deliver all of our food donations.
