Vision Statement
Temple Emanuel will be a leader in South Jersey and Reform Judaism as a vibrant, thriving
and engaging congregation. We will continue to honor our heritage by providing a place that
nurtures a cohesive community and fosters our relationship with God, Torah and Israel. Our
collective commitment will ensure that we pass along a Temple Emanuel home, relevant to
our future generations, with the same love, devotion and faith that our past generations did
for all of us.
We will continue to strengthen our congregation by providing an ongoing invitation to those
seeking a home for their Jewish journey and help them to express their Jewish identity.
Each person entering our space is an integral part of the Temple Emanuel fabric. We are
proud to say that however someone defines family they will find a Jewish connection at
Temple Emanuel.
I’m fascinated by the way life seems to fit the pieces together. Now that
my youngest has graduated from high school, I am completely immersed
in all things “college life”. It had me thinking about my own high school
and college experiences.
What does that have to do with Temple Emanuel, you ask?
Well, think back to your own high school or college experiences and all the
clichés that came with it. Harken back to the mantra of “you get out what
you put in”.
I’ve been a member of Temple Emanuel for twenty-five years and I have
been involved for twenty-five of them. We have always had so much to
offer all of our congregants, I’ve found it hard to believe that someone
would approach me to say they are not making a connection at TE.
#feelslikehome
There is always something happening at Temple Emanuel, and this program
book is filled with all the excitement. Whatever you are seeking: spirituality, knowledge, friendships,
inner peace, people you have something in common with, or if you prefer to expand your horizons,
people you have nothing in common with, ways to repair the community or ways to repair the world,
I encourage you to read through this entire book and find it at Temple Emanuel.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Jessica Manelis, President
jessica@templeemanuel.org
There is a Midrash that teaches: When all is said and done, you will not be
compared to Abraham, or Moses, or Esther; you will be compared to the
you that you might have been. As Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself
...everyone else is already taken.” It is an important message for all of us,
every single one of us, in every season, but particularly at this time, as the
year starts up and the school year gets going. There is just so much to do
and so little time.
Welcome to Temple Emanuel!
Are you courageously making space for the priorities that are real?
Is there prayer, or art, or music, or Torah?
The class you’ve been meaning to take. The project you’ve been meaning
to start. Is there Tzedakah, or laughing with your son, or reading with your
granddaughter?
To put it in another way: In a world that can be relentlessly hard, are you
making space for your Neshamah, your soul?
What makes Temple Emanuel great is that we value every person and cherish every soul.
Let it be known that Temple Emanuel, a No Place For Hate Synagogue, celebrates you for who you are,
your unique voice and style, your doubts and uncertainties, the distinct and sacred spark that is yours
and yours alone.
Temple Emanuel is a special place, where your precious soul matters, is respected and safe. More than
ever, we need one another for strength and connection.
As you peruse this guide to Temple Emanuel, describing a myriad of available opportunities, vow to
claim the possibility of a greater synagogue connection in your own life.
Temple Emanuel’s Just for You Worship Services in
Support of Special Needs were the first of their kind
in this area. “Just for You” is a musical, interactive,
inclusive experience, created for children and adults
with various needs and abilities. This ‘No Shush!’
service invites our community to embrace the values
of tolerance and acceptance. Expression of spirits will
not be ‘shushed’ in this caring, inviting atmosphere.
Several times a year, our clergy and extended Temple Emanuel family share prayer,
celebration, traditions, snacks, and crafts. Prayers and activities mostly follow an established
format that becomes familiar and easy to anticipate.
“Just for You” services are sign-language interpreted, ear-plugs are available, and a quiet,
‘safe room’ is always accessible. Healthy, gluten-free, nut-free snacks are always included.
Just for You Worship Services in Support of Special Needs celebrate Jewish traditions and
values in an inclusive, heart-warming environment.
We invite you to join us! Find out if this service is Just for You!
These events are free and open to the entire community (members and non-members).
Our primary goal is to meet the diverse needs of each child by paying close attention to his/
her developmental level, interests and strengths. Children are given numerous opportunities
to gain mastery in many areas at their own pace. Our school environment is rich, varied,
dynamic and fluid, in order to support the ever changing and developing needs of each child.
Another important goal of the Pre-School is to assist each child in developing a sense of self,
love of learning and a strong Jewish identity. Our Judaic program focuses on ritual, values,
customs and holiday celebrations. We are committed to respecting and validating the
cultural and religious background of all children and families.
Parents are our partners in the education of our students. Ongoing channels of
communication are provided and encouraged. Our school recognizes the importance of
building strong relationships among parents, staff and children. Staff development and
parent involvement contribute to the overall success of our program.
Our spacious classrooms lend themselves to the attainment of our goals. Our school,
classrooms and minds are always focused on what is best for our children.
The Pre-School at Temple Emanuel
The Pre-School at Temple Emanuel welcomes all to attend and does not
discriminate regarding race, creed or religion. We cherish all children.
Our strength as well as the main goal of our Religious School Program here at Temple
Emanuel is to foster a lifelong love of learning. We strive to instill respect of our Jewish
heritage and to prepare our students to carry on the traditions of our ancestors. L’Dor V’Dor
– from generation to generation- is the most wonderful gift that we can give our children.
We pride ourselves on providing our students with a strong foundation of Jewish values and
identity in addition to an exciting variety of programs to help them learn and grow within
our faith. Our curriculum has a variety of components – Hebrew, Torah, Israel and Jewish
life. We appreciate that one of our major responsibilities is to raise our children to respect the
significance of important rituals and lifecycle events. We begin with an age appropriate
overview of the basics and build upon that foundation from year to year.
The Religious School at Temple Emanuel
Within our program, we have created an environment where all are welcome, all are safe and
all are encouraged to learn together in a supportive environment where they can develop
relationships and participate in creating their own Jewish identity.
We believe in encouraging…
• A commitment and connection to our Jewish community in Israel
• The traditions of a Jewish home
• A strong connection to synagogue life
• The active participation in mitzvot and tikun olam throughout the year
Youth Engagement: Club Noar, Club Chaverim, EJY & TEFTY
Club Noar (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade)
Club Noar serves as an introduction to youth groups for
our students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. In Club
Noar, participants build relationships with other Jewish
children in a fun, social and supportive environment. Club
Noar encourages our youngest members to be involved in
their congregation by connecting them with friends. Club
Noar is a wonderful first step in forming a lifelong Jewish
identity and making lifelong friends.
Club Noar offers varied programs throughout the year, including occasional joint programing
with Club Chaverim, our 3rd- to 5th-grade youth group. Through these structured interactions
with Club Chaverim, youth in Club Noar have the opportunity to expand their social circle and
meet the youths who will be with them throughout their time at Temple Emanuel.
Club Chaverim (3rd - 5th Grade)
Building on the foundation of Club Noar, Club Chaverim offers a youth-group experience for
3rd to 5th Graders. This group offers age-appropriate events and activities for participants to
grow their Jewish identity and strengthen their connection to friends and the Temple Emanuel
community in a fun, social and supportive environment. Club Chaverim meets our kids where
they are in terms of their social, emotional, psychological and academic development. We provide
a safe Jewish setting for identity formation and exploration.
In addition to our Sunday programs at Temple Emanuel and trips outside of the building, Club
Chaverim offers four Parent’s Night Out programs on Saturday nights where children enjoy a fun
series of programs at Temple Emanuel while parents are able to have an evening to themselves.
Through offering diverse programs, Club Chaverim reaches a varied group of children and helps
to expand the social circles of our youth.
Fifth graders from Club Chaverim are given the opportunity to attend programs at EJY (our 6th
to 8th Grade youth group) in May to preview their new youth group and make new friends in
advance of becoming full EJY members in August.
EJY (6th - 8th Grade)
Emanuel Junior Youth, or EJY (pronounced “edgy”), offers an opportunity for 6th to 8th Graders
to have fun and explore their Judaism in a thoughtful environment. EJY focuses on providing
a safe and connected atmosphere during the middle-school years when our children deal with
many social, physical, psychological and academic changes. EJY allows our youths to work
through these challenges in a supportive and safe Jewish
setting.
Youth empowerment and cultivating the next generation
of leaders is a key component to our youth programs.
Leaders of TEFTY (our 9th to 12th Grade youth group)
are always present at EJY programs to assist in running
the event, building connections between the groups, and
serving as positive Jewish role models. EJY members
also have the opportunity to directly give feedback on
programs and shape the calendar for the upcoming year
by serving on the EJY Steering Committee.
TEFTY (9th - 12th Grade)
TEFTY (Temple Emanuel Federation of Temple
Youth) is our award-winning youth group for
grades 9 through 12. TEFTY is a strong, active
branch of the Temple Emanuel community.
Our teens support the synagogue, their
community, their world, and Israel.
TEFTY offers wide-ranging programs that
include social, social justice, and spiritual
opportunities. TEFTY enriches the lives of all
teens who participate in the myriad of events,
projects, services and programs. Awareness
and commitment form the foundation for
our future leaders. Through TEFTY, teens are
connected to an international network of other
Jewish teens affiliated with NFTY, the North
American Federation of Temple Youth. Our
local NFTY region, NFTY-PAR, (Pennsylvania
Area Region) offers annual conventions where
teens from across Pennsylvania, South Jersey
and North Delaware come together for social,
social justice, and leadership development
programs.
Comers and Seniors groups. Not only do they plan group-wide events such as monthly
lunches, but members can suggest and organize outings for whoever is interested.
Prime Timers activities are open to all TE members. Besides the lunches on the third Thursday
of each month, the group plans outings for area performances, and exhibits – often with
Contributing to Temple Emanuel
Our Temple funds provide a beautiful way in which you may remember someone special and,
at the same time, help to maintain several worthwhile synagogue projects. Acknowledgment of
your contribution is made in our monthly newsletter, The Light. The family of the deceased, or the
individual being honored, is notified by the Temple of your generosity. So many of our families find
that in times of joy, as in times of sorrow, this is an appropriate means of sharing with others.
