2 get in touch Tuesday February 13 2018 from the editor’s desk YOU HAVE to applaud the community-minded people in New Brighton and their fight to save the Roy Stokes Hall (page 1). The hall has been a hub for Brighton over the decades but, if it falls into the hands of private developers, it could literally fall. So its fate lies with the people trying to save it and the community itself – it needs people and groups using it. Over the years, the hall has been used for 21sts to those under the radar crown and anchor nights (or was that the old RSA hall on New Brighton Rd? The years have faded my memory on that one). A meeting was organised between community members and business owners recently to discuss issues including overgrown gardens, properties not being maintained, litter and the general upkeep of the suburb. Hayley Guglietta Richmond resident and business owner Hayley Guglietta is planning a wide-scale clean-up of the area and is hoping local businesses will help with donations. Mrs Guglietta is unhappy that some landlords were not looking after their properties, she said. “They should be made to take responsibility for the maintenance of their sites.” “I live and work in the area, I’ve invested in the area and it’s frustrating to see absent landlords not realising how leaving their sites impacts on MAINTENANCE NEEDED: A Richmond business owner has called properties like this unoccupied building on Stanmore Rd “an abomination”. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER everyone else.” Central Ward city councillor Deon Swiggs attended the community meeting and said there will be a bigger focus on improving the Richmond commercial area. “It’s a good time to start looking at that (Richmond) village area and have some focus on some of those issues that (the community) have been raising.” Cr Swiggs is pushing to form a business and landowners’ association for the area. “One of the things that was quite clear is that there seems to be a potential disconnect with some businesses in the area and talking to the community about their expectations and potentially how they can both work together to improve the village area to get it up to its potential,” said Cr Swiggs. He said he has been in contact with the team managing the city council’s Enliven Place Project Fund about getting funding to boost the area. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk HOT POOL LAND LEASE Development Christchurch Ltd has been granted a lease for a portion of New Brighton beach to enable the development of the hot water pools. The Coastal- Burwood Community Board approved the lease last week for a period of 18 months, with a six-month right of renewal if required. MUKA PARK PLAYGROUNDS Two former St Andrew’s College playgrounds will not go to Muka Park, Marshland. The Coastal- Burwood Community Board decided not to adopt a proposal to buy the playgrounds. The board said there are already numerous play and exercise equipment items available to replace the removed flying fox. LEAGUE AWARDS Linwood Keas’ Jasmine Tuli missed out on being named female volunteer for the year at the New Zealand Rugby League Awards on Saturday night in Auckland. Mrs Tuli, wife of the late Teni Tuli, who died just before his 300th game for the club, was nominated in the most contested category of the night with nine others. Volunteer Chantez Connor, of the Otaika Eagles in Northland, took home the award.
