Baseline Knowledge
What do you want people to know? Come to think of
it, what do you know right now? The next part of the
Intellectual element of the Purple Monster PIE model
centres around baseline knowledge.
It’s easy to make assumptions on what people
know, or what you think they know, because, try
as you might, you can’t forget the knowledge you
already hold. By the same token, there is no quicker
way to lose your audience than by pitching your
communication at a level that patronises them, and
tells them what they already know. By the time you
get to the new information, people will have
tuned out.
Top tips:
• Try to get a good understanding of what your
audience knows before the event, whether by
getting out in person or conducting surveys.
• Make sure everyone is brought up to speed in
your pre-event communications.
• At the event itself, ensure that all content is
pitched at the right level, enhancing those
with existing knowledge and informing those
without.
• Create a suite of breakout sessions, so people
can choose where they need to expand their
knowledge.
