Daddy-daughter dance
Discover The New
a timeless NB tradition
Hilary Anderson
Freelance Reporter
No one was quite sure
who was having more
fun — Tim Mateja or his
daughters ZiZi and Vivienne.
They were among 400
people at the Northbrook
Park District’s annual daddy-daughter
dance, coined
“A Night in Hollywood”
and held Feb. 9, at the
Northbrook Allgauer’s on
the Riverfront.
They came dodging the
remnants of a snowstorm
that blanketed the area the
night before with roughly
eight inches of snow.
“Snow or not, we were
going to be at this event,”
Tim Mateja said. “We have
been attending the daddydaughter
dance for the past
five years and would not
miss it for anything. It is a
special together time for us
dads and daughters.”
The trio was standing in
line waiting for their turn
to play one of the games
awaiting those at the dance.
Movie trivia, bowling, —
which consisted of knocking
down pretend Oscar
statues — spin the wheel
and popcorn buckets were
all games guests could play.
“Everyone’s a winner
when they come for this
event,” Tim Mateja said. “I
came on a mission — to be
more efficient so we could
spend as much time as possible
taking advantage of
all the activities.”
The night also included
dancing to music with a DJ.
Some dads danced with
their daughters traditionally,
while others held their
princesses up in their arms
Dads and daughters gather on the dance floor while
dance on Feb. 9 at Allgauger’s on the River Front, in
Caitlynn Oertel, 6, of Northbrook, admires her special
corsage.
as a colorful disco light
danced among the crowd.
And, there was no mistaking
that everyone was
having a good time.
“I liked getting two photos
taken with my dad,
one serious and one fun
one,” said 11-year-old ZiZi
Mateja.
Each daughter at the
dance received a wrist corsage
and goodie bag that
included a T-shirt reminding
them of the evening,
while each dad received
boutonnieres.
The evening even reminded
many guests of a
Hollywood fashion show.
Abby Steinberg, 6, came
in a sparkly pink dress accompanied
by her proud
dad, Jeff Steinberg.
Tai Arnstein, 6, wore a
dress with beautiful red
roses on a white fluffy skirt
that blended perfectly with
a red bodice. Tai looked as
though she could have just
stepped out of a rose garden
in a movie set.
Ceci Lombardo, 7, came
escorted on the arm of her
dad, Joe Lombardo, to
the Hollywood props and
backdrop area to take more
photos.
“This is our third year,”
Joe Lombardo said. “It is
Northbrook/Glenview D30 Board of Education
New Maple School set following approval of construction bids
Daniel I. Dorfman
Freelance Reporter
With a round of applause,
the Northbrook/
Glenview District 30
school board officially
signed off on the construction
of a new Maple
School at its Feb. 8 meeting.
The last major step toward
the creation of the
new middle school occurred
when the school
board unanimously approved
four contracts tied
into the construction of
the new facility to begin
later this year.
“We are building a new
school guys,” Chuck Gitles,
school board president
announced at the end
of the last vote, drawing a
roar of approval from his
fellow board members.
The construction management
contract was
awarded to Mt. Prospectbased
Nicholas & Associates
after 70 bids were
opened last month, according
to District officials.
The new Maple School,
the home for District
30’s sixth through eighth
grades, is anticipated
to be approximately
111,000-square-feet,
replacing the existing
roughly 89,000-squarefeet
facility that was
built in 1949, according
to school officials. It will
be on the same Shermer
Road location, placed on
the athletic field of the
current building.
The currently estimated
price tag of the construction
project is approximately
$33.5 million,
according to Dale Falk,
District 30’s assistant superintendent
for finance
The Northbrook/Glenview District 30 Board of Education approved contracts to support the construction of the new Maple School at it’s Feb. 8
meeting. Construction is set to begin in mid-March of 2018. Graphics courtesy of Northbrook/Glenview School District 30.
“This Maple School is truly the
school of our community. It is a
building we are very proud of.”
Dr. Brian Wegley — Superintendent of Northbrook/Glenview
School District 30 on the impending
construction of a new Maple School.
and operations. He noted
that is within the $40.6
million budget for the
project, but added additional
costs for interior
furnishings are still forthcoming.
One feature of new
Maple will be a second
floor that will serve as
the District’s main office.
Superintendent Brian Wegley
believed that option
would create long-range
efficiencies in terms of
staffing as opposed to
moving the District staff
to another location.
“This will come in under
$2 million and give us
a long-term solution that
will be less than leasing
space,” Wegley said.
Starting next month,
the District’s office staff,
who now work out of
trailers adjacent to the
current Maple building,
are scheduled to
be temporarily located
at the Northview Bank
and Trust building on
Waukegan Road in Northfield,
noted Beth Preis,
the district’s publicity
coordinator.
To finance the construct,
District 30 will be using
the proceeds of a $36.3
million bond sale referendum
passed by voters last
years in addition to drawing
down over $5 million
from the District’s fund
balance.
Wegley said a groundbreaking
ceremony is
scheduled for April 5
promising the school’s
roughly 400 students will
District officials hope work on the new Maple School will be completed by the fall of
2019. The new building will include an area for student learning entitled the learning
staircase.
be donning orange hard
hats.
The building is expected
to open in the fall
of 2019, according to the
web site statement.
“Tonight is the culmination
of a lot of work of
what I would say is a marathon
project. It has been a
labor of love and certainly
something we have been
very passionate about,”
Wegley said at the meeting.
“This Maple School
is truly the school of our
community. It is a building
we are very proud of.”

THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
New Trier breaks world
records with 44 twin sets,
one triplet set
The Guinness Book
of World Records, now
known as Guinness World
Records, features more
than 40,000 records, ranging
from topics in sports to
human interest to celebrities
and food and drink.
Students in the sophomore
class at New Trier
High School found out
May 18, 2017, they’re
among those record-holders
after they earned not
one, but two records themselves,
including: Most
Twins and Most Multiples
in a Single Academic Year
at One School.
The sophomore class
features 44 sets of twins
and one set of triplets,
accounting for 91 of the
1,038 total kids in the
class. That number would
make the twin birth rate
about one in every 10,
compared to one in every
30, which is the national
average.
The previous record
of 24 sets of twins in one
class was held by Highcrest
Middle School in
Wilmette, one of New
Trier’s elementary feeder
schools.
The same set of twins
who discovered the initial
record, Luke and Ryan
Novosel, also led their
peers at New Trier in this
latest application, according
to a press release.
Last year, 23 of the 24
sets of twins at Highcrest
entered New Trier as
freshmen.
“We called the administration
saying, ‘Hey these
kids are entering, there’s
got to be some more,’”
said Nancy Fendley Novosel,
during a Feb. 7 press
conference at the school.
It took the staff at Guinness
World Records a total
of 17 months to get back
to the Novosels and verify
the record, a longer time
period than they had originally
expected, they said.
Gubernatorial candidate
Kennedy makes stop in
Glenview
Despite his deep and
distinguished roots on the
East Coast, Chris Kennedy
set out for Decatur,
Ill., after college. He said
he wanted to help feed
America, and getting a job
with food processing giant
Archer Daniels Midland
was the best way to learn
the industry.
Three decades later,
served as the president of
the Merchandise Mart, the
chairman of the board at
the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign and
the co-founder of local
nonprofit Top Box Foods.
Now, Kennedy is seeking
election to the state’s
highest office.
The eighth child of Robert
and Ethel Kennedy
made an appearance at the
Glenview Park Center on
Wednesday, Feb. 7, to talk
about his campaign as a
Democratic candidate for
governor.
After introducing himself
and recounting his
unusual path to the gubernatorial
race, the Kenilworth
resident fielded
several questions from the
nearly 50 people in attendance.
While he addressed
a variety of issues facing
Illinoisans, Kennedy
repeatedly circled back
to the main themes of his
campaign: education and
tax reform.
Hilton Chicago Northbrook earns Chamber’s
2018 Corporate Citizen of the Year honor
Submitted by the
Northbrook Chamber of
Commerce
While being part of one
of the most nationally recognized
names in the hotel
industry, the Hilton Chicago
Northbrook is also the
story of a family-owned
and -operated business that
cares about its neighbors,
quietly giving back to the
local community and helping
individuals who are
rarely in the spotlight.
The Allgauer family’s
involvement in the
hospitality industry in
Northbrook dates back
generations. General
Manager Holly Allgauer-
Cir’s grandfather founded
Allgauers, the original
building on the property,
which served as a restaurant
and banquet facility
from 1974 - 1984. Her father
Frank Allgauer built a
single hotel tower in 1984,
establishing Allgauers Hotel,
then a second tower in
1988, which later transitioned
to the Hilton flag.
But despite its growth
and brand name, the hotel
has always had a special
place in its heart and time
for those who are often the
most vulnerable and least
recognized in society —
youth of all ages and in
particular, children with
special needs.
The hotel also donates
brunches and overnight
stays to churches and synagogues
for their fundraisers,
as well as other organizations
that support youth
such as adoption agencies
and service groups. The
hotel estimates the value of
its nearly 150 annual donations
to community causes
to be around $30,000.
But the value of some of
the donations has no price
tag.
Allgauer-Cir said.
On any given day,
amidst busy travelers
checking into the hotel or
executives listening to a
presentation in one of its
banquet rooms, children
from the nearby Cove
School, which serves
youth with special needs,
might be enjoying a pizza
making session, or engaging
in an activity to learn
about the hotel industry.
Twice a year, the hotel
opens its doors and gives
Cove students a rare, firsthand
opportunity to shadow
the staff and learn more
about the inner workings
of the hotel, including explanations
about all of the
equipment, tours of the
restaurant and the kitchen,
and a chance to meet and
ask questions of the hotel
staff.
In addition, the hotel
also helps support the Cove
Family, customer service
front and center at la de da!
Submitted by the
Northbrook Chamber of
Commerce
Since it first opened its
doors almost 13 years ago
in downtown Northbrook,
la de da! has delighted customers
as a fun and stylish
place to shop — the kind of
store where you can grab a
quick gift, or lose yourself
while browsing amongst all
of the merchandise.
But make no mistake
about it, owner Jill Carlisle
has put her serious business
skills to work to create one
of Northbrook’s most successful
specialty shops,
developing an assortment
of selections of home decor,
baby gifts, and fashion
accessories that appeal to
women of all ages.
Over the years, the store
has survived and continued
growth despite economic
ups and downs. La de da!
now enjoys a loyal clientele
that has come to know
and appreciate its customer
service.
Carlisle opened the store
surrounded by her loving
friends and family. Her
decision was one of necessity
as she needed to support
herself and her young
children after the death of
her husband. In order to be
near her children, Carlisle
decided not to seek a “safe”
corporate job. Instead she
used the skills she knew
best — going all the way
back to when she worked
in retail as a high school
student at Young In Heart
in Hubbard Woods, to the
skills she honed during her
14-year career at Marshall
Field’s.
Over the years, the
900-square-foot store has
tripled its business and has
grown to a staff of eight.
She credits her site in
Downtown retailer la de da!, owned by Jill Carlisle, is
the Northbrook Chamber’s Northbrook Business of the
Year. Photo Submitted
downtown Northbrook for
much of her success with
neighboring retailers providing
daily foot traffic and
convenient parking.
“You have to be committed
to work hard in this
business,” Carlisle said.
“Part of the reason for my
success is that I am present
at the store almost every
single day.”
The store is deeply rooted
in family. It was her
father’s influence and his
signature expression — “la
de da!,” his personal seal
of approval — that is the
always present in the store.
Carlisle was driven by
a desire to be available for
her family while also providing
a source of income.
Her children were her daily
motivation. “I believe the
commitment to my kids in
those early days is what
drove my success,” she
said.
The store has earned the
reputation as a place to always
find something new,
but, Carlisle commitment
to personal service is arguable
her best-known quality
She offers a concierge
service that is door-to-door
— customers can call with
a request to purchase a gift,
identify a price point, explain
the occasion, and Jill
and her staff will pick it
out, wrap it , place it in the
iconic black and white bag.
“We have actually run
the gift out to someone
waiting in their car,” she
said. “This is what separates
us from the rest —
and it’s something not
available when shopping
on the Internet. I like to call
it the ‘hit and run’ because
it’s directly geared to helping
our customers right at
their moment of need.”
Having experienced success,
Carlisle believes in
the importance of giving
back. And, she learned the
impact she can have in her
community by providing a
way for her customers to
make a difference.
Several times a year,
Carlisle conducts charity
events to support others. In
2017, she planned an event
with her customers to raise
$1,500 for hurricane relief
efforts. Last Mother’s
Day, la de da! delivered
40 baskets with products
collected from her customers
to a women’s shelter in
Evanston.
Carlisle will donate the
store’s $500 honorarium
that accompanies the award
to Ann and Robert Lurie
Children’s Hospital.

Find the right spot for your kid at Camp Expo
22CM presents annual
event Feb. 24
Eric DeGrechie
Managing Editor
Northbrook Court is a popular
destination for local residents
looking for good deals. Naturally,
it’s also a nice fit for 22nd
Century Media’s annual Camp
Expo, where parents can shop
for the right spot to send their
kids this summer.
“We are really excited to
be holding this year’s expo at
Northbrook Court,” said Heather
Warthen, chief operating officer
for 22nd Century Media. “The
North Shore location is perfect
and the amount of space they
have really will lend itself to
continue growing this event in
the future.”
The fun runs from 10 a.m.-2
p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1515
Lake Shore Drive. This event
will offer camps — both day and
overnight from across the Midwest
region — a chance to meet
potential camp attendees and for
local businesses to connect with
camping families.
“We are also really pleased
with the variety of vendors and
hope that people will come to
learn more about them and what
they have to offer for their children,”
Warthen said. “The best
part is this expo is free to attend.”
In addition to 22nd Century
Media, the event is sponsored by
Banner Day Camp and Hi-Five
Sports Camp. The gift bag sponsor
is JCC Chicago — Big Idea
and Apachi J Camps.
There will also be vendor
booths and interactive activities
for children and teens. Free face
painting and balloon animals go
from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for
North Shore families to take advantage
of our one-stop shop and
discover not only the right camp
for their children, but also learn
more about local businesses in
the North Shore that they might
not know about,” Warthen said.
about it and not give up,”
said Westmoor student
David Kaminsky.
The students learned
other interesting facts
such as: Roz the robot got
her name from the first
robot story ever written,
“Rossum’s Universal Robots,”
Roz is powered by
solar energy, though most
of the technology used to
build Roz is not yet invented
and
It takes Brown an average
of three days to finalize
one illustration, from
concept to ready to print,
and there are 65 illustrations
in “Wild Robot.”
Brown visits about 20
schools a year, he said, and
enjoys seeing children’s
reactions to his work.
“There’s nothing like
seeing [kids’] reaction firsthand
with my own stories.
Meadowbrook student Emily Peterson (right) gets her birthday hat signed by author Peter Brown during a visit on Jan. 30 Photos Submitted
Brown presented to students at Meadowbrook,
Greenbriar and Westmoor schools Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
To see what jokes work,
what they react to, that
is great information for
my next project,” he said.
Brown lives in New York
and grew up in New Jersey,
inspired by his grandfather,
who was an artist.
Brown studied painting
and drawing in college with
the intent on becoming an
animator, until he took a
class in children’s books.
“The nice thing about
children’s books is, where
animation needs hundreds
of people to make
it come to life, you can do
it by yourself in a picture
book,” he said. “I think of
my picture books as short
films where I’m the director,
writer, producer, and
I design the lighting and
costumes and write all the
dialog. So its kind of the
best of both worlds.”
A Westmoor third-grader,
Sydney Rubin, summed
up the value of his visit.
Westmoor students enjoy hearing about the creative
process from the best-selling author Brown.
“He’s very inspiring
and I want to accomplish
what he accomplished one
day,” she said.
Brown’s second children’s
novel, “Wild Robot
Escapes,” will be released
March 13.

a series of issues as
discussed at the Lake Forest
on Monday, Feb. 5.
Catherine Lemmer, director
explained the many
issues the library is facing,
one of the biggest being
the dome of the library.
As winter started, residents
may have noticed the
library covered the outside
of the dome with a tarp,
“to buy [the library] some
Some of the issue facing
the dome are the leadedcopper
at $100,0000. That
price does not include advice
the library received
that the dome needs to be
modernized, insulated and
The work needed at the
library extends past the
dome structure. There
are five separate and aging
HVAC systems in
the 32,000-square-foot
library. Lemmer said the
separate systems do not
The library also has
Lemmer said the library’s
The Northbrook Tower
covers the second largest
community of any 22nd
Century Media paper on
the North Shore — behind
only The Glenview Lantern.
Although Glenview
has roughly 14,000 more
residents than Northbrook,
rumor has it The Tower is
still the top dog in terms
of total circulation.
At this point, you might
be wondering why we’re
discussing village populations
and circulations.
Over the past few issues
of The Tower, you may
have noticed an increase
in our Letters to the Editor
section. But, prior to these
last couple weeks, we
had gone awhile without
receiving one. Hopefully
that means we’re doing
our jobs here at The Tower
and covering all the issues
our readers care about.
But, if I may, I’d like to
briefly discuss the section
just in case it sometimes
get lost in the shuffle of
things.
Basically, this part of
the paper (nestled near the
back of the News section
with my weekly editorial)
gives Northbrook
residents an opportunity
to voice their opinions on
hyperlocal issues.
If you feel passionately
enough about an issue and
would like to explain your
reasoning, send a Letter
to the Editor to martin@
northbrooktower.com
In support of the nearperfect
space for public
discourse, the fun shouldn’t
stop there. We would love
to encourage public conversation
through The Tower,
which means Northbrook
residents writing letters in
response to other letters,
or at least on the same
subject — you might notice
something similar with residents
speaking in regards
to D225’s recently passed
transgender policy. Regardless
of the issue, please
keep discussions cordial.
Lastly, here are the rules
for submitting Letters to
the Editor:
• Letters should be
limited to 400 words
• Northbrook/District
residents can submit
entries
• Every letter must be
signed
With a bevy of hotly
contested approaching, I’m
looking forward to hearing
what everyone has to say.
Proud to be a Glenbrook
North mom
I am a mother of a GBN
freshman. I support D225
students using the bathroom
that corresponds to
their gender identity, and I
applaud the District for taking
up the important issue.
Unfortunately, the Trump
regime has withdrawn protections
for transgender
students, and it is up to local
and state government
to fill in the gaps to ensure
the safety and well-being
of this vulnerable population.
Transgender and
gender-nonconforming
individuals are frequent
targets of harassment and
abuse, rather than being
the abusers. For statistics
on this, please see the Office
of Victims of Crime
(www.ovc.gov/pubs/forge/
sexual_numbers.html) and
the National Transgender
Discrimination Survey
(www.transequality.org/issues/national-transgenderdiscrimination-survey).
I understand that some
unfortunately misguided
people are concerned that
students will exploit the
transgender policy to get
into a forbidden bathroom
or locker room. Although
that has never happened,
such situations should be
dealt with — and disciplined
— on an individual
basis. I am more concerned
with the safety and wellbeing
of trans and gendernonconforming
students.
This policy will not allow
boys to use the girls room
and vice-versa; Rather, it
will allow all girls to access
the girls room and all boys
to access the boys room.
I hope that the parents
expressing concern about
the safety of their kids decide
to turn their attention
to ways that actually will
prevent sexual assault.
Here are some ideas you
can teach your kids, especially
your boys:
1. Silence does not equal
consent.
2. Do not blame rape victims
for the violence perpetrated
against them.
3. Don’t use alcohol and/
or drugs to get someone to
have sex with you.
4. Do not participate in
sexist behavior by objectifying
or stereotyping women.
5. Interrupt rape jokes.
Sound Off Policy
6. Challenge images of
violence against women in
advertising, pornography
and other forms of media.
7. Support women and
men working to end sexual
violence by volunteering
your time, donating money
and/or lobbying legislators.
8. Recognize that sexual
violence will not end until
men become part of the solution.
600 students recite poetry readings
Martin Carlino, Editor
Glenbrook North freshman
Haley Sandlow
stepped up on stage, took a
deep breath, looked out to
a crowd of more than 100
students, faculty and parents
and began to recite the
first line of John McCrae’s
“In Flanders Fields.”
With Sandlow’s declaim
of the noted wartime
poem’s first stanza, Glenbrook
North’s inaugural
participation in a national
contest known as Poetry
Out Loud was underway.
In total, more than 600
GBN — and some Glenbrook
South — students,
spanning more than 30
different English classes,
recited poems they memorized
in front of their respective
classes.
Sandlow was just one
of 30 students selected by
GBN educators as class finalists
to perform on Feb.
7 in the GBN library for
the chance to advance to
the contest’s regional competition
on Feb. 21.
“This is our first year
participating in the national
contest and, honestly,
just the process is
making it all worthwhile,”
said Karen Cunningham,
instructional supervisor of
the English department at
GBN.
Cunningham first got
word of Poetry Out Loud
while attending a summer
workshop at the Chicago
Poetry Foundation.
“[The instructors of that
workshop] first told us
of this and talked about
all the positives they had
gotten from watching students
perform,” she said.
“This year, I’m the instructional
supervisor and
I just said ‘let’s do this,
let’s give it a try.’”
Cunningham and a
group of several other
judges helped determine
the winner of GBN’s final
by formulating a score for
each student. To calculate
each student’s score,
the judges followed scoring
guidelines set by Poetry
Out Loud organizers,
which evaluates performers
on a variety of criteria.
After the completion
of each student performance
— which each
roughly ranged from 30
to 90 seconds — judges
scored GBS junior Sabina
Roberts’ rendition of Tony
Hoagland’s “Please Don’t”
as the top performance of
the afternoon. Roberts was
able to participate in the
event because of her enrollment
in the Glenbrook
Academy, a district-wide,
four-year program for high
achieving students.
Despite the poem’s tenstanza
length, Roberts was
unfazed by the memorization
requirement of the
contest.
“I was a little nervous,
but not that much,” Roberts
said. “It was kind of
scary at first, but once I got
started, I was fine.”
But, because of a technicality
with the competition’s
registration system,
it’s unlikely Roberts will
be able to advance to the
regional final.
Per Cunningham, GBN
senior Katherine Friedan
will likely represent GBN
on Feb. 21. Friedan earned
first runner-up for her performance
of Rita Dove’s
“American Smooth.”
For Friedan, picking a
poem that she found meaningful
was of the utmost
importance.
GBS junior Sabina Roberts performs “Please Don’t.”
Roberts’ reading earned the highest score from judges.
“I wanted to pick a
poem that resonated with
me,” she said. “I probably
went through 100 poems.
I narrowed it down to poems
I thought would speak
well.”
As part of her advancement
to the regional
event, Friedan will have
to memorize and recite an
additional poem. As for
insights into her selection,
Friedan still holds meaning
at the top of the list.
“I’m still not sure on
my second selection, but
it will still be important to
me to pick something that
has meaning and speaks to
me,” she said.
Other top finishers included
GBN senior Jeremy
Stein, for his reading
of “Where the Wild Things
Go” and GBN junior Erin
Rosenfeld, who used sign
language to perform her
poem.
Regardless of students’
scores, Cunningham
couldn’t have been more
pleased with the impact of
GBN’s first year in Poetry
Out Loud.
“It just makes me super
proud of our students,” she
said. “It’s just a different
way of showcasing their
talents and passions and
most importantly getting
them to realize they do like
poetry.”
Nachos are always a fan
favorite. The cheesy chips,
often a go-to food at sports
games, movie theaters and
carnivals, can be shared as
an appetizer or eaten as a
main course.
The best thing about nachos
is how their recipes
vary from place to place.
For years, restaurants have
been crafting nachos their
own way.
Nachos may come in the
traditional style with melted
cheese and ground beef, but
today, nachos can be made
with everything from pulled
pork, chicken and guacamole
to steak, chili and turkey.
With Feb. 24 designated
as National Tortilla Chip
Day, our group of 22nd
Century Media editors decided
the time was right to
venture across our North
Shore communities, sampling
a variety of nachos
from local eateries which
put their own spins on the
hit dish.
Colossal Nachos — The
Landmark Inn, Northbrook
What’s in a name? Well,
at Northbrook’s The Landmark
Inn, names say it all.
The downtown eatery is
a literal Northbrook landmark,
as it resides in the
oldest commercial building
in the village.
Residents have flocked
to the community staple for
its classic, wide-ranging
menu since 2001, which includes
its signature colossal
nachos appetizer. And, true
to its straightforward nature,
the name provides the
perfect story of this dish.
The Landmark Inn’s colossal
nachos are just that
— a massive serving fit to
satisfy any nacho-lovers’
taste buds.
The Landmark Inn’s colossal nachos ($10.95, $12.95 for
steak) come with your choice of chili, seasoned chicken
or steak and are topped with cheese, sour cream,
guacamole, jalapeno peppers, beans and tomatoes.
Martin Carlino/22nd Century Media
This hearty nacho offering
($10.95, $12.95 with
steak) comes with your
choice of chili, steak or
seasoned chicken and is
topped with cheese, sour
cream, guacamole, beans,
jalapeno peppers and tomatoes.
Those looking for
even more options surely
won’t be disappointed as
guests can also substitute in
steak. If you’re in the mood
for a little spice of life, The
Landmark Inn’s salsa verde
is the perfect complement.
“It’s easily one of our topselling
appetizers,” said Samantha
Reinhart, longtime
Landmark Inn worker. “You
can never really go wrong
with our nachos.”
And Reinhart’s sentiments
are true, you can
never really go wrong with
this dish. This writer highly
recommends this ample
portion of nacho goodness.
The Landmark inn is located
at 1352 Shermer Road
and is open 11 a.m.-1:30
a.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11
a.m.-2 a.m. on Friday and
11 a.m.-3 a.m. on Saturday.
The carnita nachos ($13.95) are available on the
Guacamole nachos
— Javier’s Mexican
Restaurant, Glenview
Are nachos a meal or an
appetizer?
That question has
haunted the minds of great
philosophers since Plato
roamed the earth. I’ve
heard solid arguments from
both camps, but neither
has given ground in recent
years. Still, the answer, if
you ask me, is obvious.
Nachos can, if done well,
stand alone as a meal of
their own, and the guacamole
nachos ($9.75) at Javier’s
Mexican Restaurant
prove my point.
The dish includes tortilla
chips spread with beans,
melted cheese, sour cream,
jalapenos and, of course,
plenty of guacamole. If you
crave protein, Javier’s also
serves chicken and ground
beef nachos for the same
price.
But the fun doesn’t stop
there. Upgrade to ribeye
steak ($11.95), steak fajita
($12.95) or fiesta ($10.75)
nachos, or keep it simple
with plan cheese nachos
($6.75).
And, if you’re foolish
enough to order your nachos
as an appetizer, I’d
suggest pairing them with
the tacos tipicos Mexicanos,
three tacos served on
soft flour or soft corn tortillas
with lettuce and tomatoes,
or the fajitas, a healthy
serving of sizzling fajitas
mixed with green peppers,
tomatoes and grilled onions
served with a side of guacamole
and pico de gallo.
Javier’s Mexican Restaurant,
1829 Waukegan
Road, Glenview, is open
11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-
Thursday and 11 a.m.-11
p.m. Friday-Saturday. For
Carnita nachos —
Guanajuato, Glencoe
When you order Guanajuato’s
carnita nachos, they
“will never disappoint you
because they have everything.”
The nachos — a special
running for $13.95 — have
multiple layers of toppings,
so every chip packs a flavorful
punch, said Jovanny
Diaz, the head chef at Guanajuato,
a contemporary
Mexican and tequila bar
located at 73 Green Bay
Road, Glencoe.
“Everything” includes
black beans, pickled red
onions, Chihuahua cheese,
guacamole, sour cream,
chopped cilantro, jalapenos
and, most importantly, pork
shoulder, butt and belly,
which is cooked for six
hours in the oven.
All of the toppings are
intertwined with fresh corn
tortilla chips.
“It’s pure comfort food,”
said Margarita Challenger,
the restaurant’s owner.
“Our nachos are one of our
most popular dishes.”
Challenger also noted in
the dead of winter, these
nachos can brighten your
day — both in flavor and
sight with its colorful toppings.
When I tried the carnita
nachos for myself, I was
pleasantly surprised. They
weren’t your run-of-themill
appetizer; they melted
in your mouth and provided
a nice zesty flavor between
the toppings and crispy
carnitas. be on the specials
menu, which rotates every
two weeks.
10 Questions
with Kelly Pearson
hockey
From Page 42
scored the Spartans’ second
goal on a rebound
shot, less than three minutes
after Rubin broke the
game’s scoring drought.
Game Two on Tuesday
will mark the sixth time the
teams have met this year.
The Spartans hold a 4-1
edge in the series thus far.
“We always know it’s
going to be a battle and
every games we’ve had
against them has been
close,” Wilcox said. “So
you have to play the full
51 minutes, all the way
through.”
Philbin was happy with
the effort his Titans gave
him in the loss.
“We played pretty well.
Both teams played pretty
well,” he said. “In the
third period we forced
the issue too much,
forced our turnovers, and
it ended up in the back of
our net. We have to cut
that out and we needed
to stick to the game plan
the way we did in the first
two periods.”
Pearson is a senior and
major contributor on the
Glenbrook girls track and
field team.
When and why did
you start competing in
track and field?
I started competing in
track in middle school
because it was a lot of fun.
I really enjoyed it in my
freshman year to help me
get better in football.
Do you have any
superstitions before a
game?
Before I run a race, I always
do a tuck jump with
one of my teammates.
What do you like most
about the sport?
I like that’s it’s a team
sport and an individual
sport. It’s a team sport
that in your teammates
are always there with you
in practice and cheering
you on but also individual
that if you work hard, you
get better.
What is one thing that
people don’t know
about you?
I’m really sarcastic and
loud with my friends,
which isn’t always the
way at school or in sports.
What’s your favorite
personal sports
moment?
In the 4x400 last year I set
a personal record by a lot
at the sectional last year,
so that was a lot of fun.
If you were a
superhero, what
superpower would you
want?
I would want telekinesis
because then I could move
things with my mind.
What would you do if
you won the lottery?
I would save some for
college for me and my
sisters, donate some to
charity and whatever I felt
like with the rest.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be?
Michal Dwojak/22nd Century Media
I would probably play
hockey because it seems
really cool. I ice skate,
but not competitively or
anything like that, just
for fun.
What is one thing on
your bucket list?
I want to visit all of the
NFL stadiums. I’ve been
to six so far.
If you could be any
animal, which would
you choose?
I’d want to be a giraffe
because I always thought
they were cool.
Boys Track and Field
New coach happy to be home for North
Michal Dwojak
Sports Editor
Sean Brandt was tired of doing
something he didn’t love.
He had spent time managing
accounts for a telecommunication
company but realized it
wasn’t something he wanted to
do anymore. Teaching had been
something in the back of his
mind, and random one day, it
became his next venture.
So it seemed like a complete
circle when a instructional assistant
position opened at Glenbrook
North, his alma mater, at
the exact time that he finished
his P.E. certification. When the
boys track and field head coach
position opened up, he just continued
on his path toward fulfilling
that happiness.
“I was only going to be happy
if I was doing something I’m
happy with,” Brandt said.
“I was lucky enough to take
over the program. I’m just excited
to be a part of it, not taking
over it.”
Brandt takes over the program
from Scott Lasky, who
stepped away. But outside of the
head position, all of the coaches
remain the same, especially the
ones that used to coach Brandt
when he ran for the Spartans.
That’s something the new coach
is hoping will lead to the continued
success the Spartans
have enjoyed. There’s no awkwardness
between him and the
coaches; if anything, it’s more
comfortable than any other situation.
“I get to learn a lot of tips and
pointers,” Brandt said. “It’s a
dream scenario because I know
so many people and feel comfortable
these big-ticket questions
that I might not know
where to go to if I was a stranger.”
There are a few things the
new coach does want to change,
though. He’s looking forward to
building a stronger team unity
group to build upon the success
Senior Kyle Foley will be a major contributor for the Glenbrook North boys track and field team this
season. 22nd Century File Photo
the Spartans enjoyed in the past
few seasons. The workout routines
are pretty consistent with
what he wants to build, it’s just
building that intensity and camaraderie
he can’t wait to add
to the culture.
“I didn’t want to change too
many things because they’ve
built a lot of success in the past
years,” Brandt said. “I know
they have things established
that worked. I just want to focus
on the team morale aspect
of things.”
He’s already made his mark.
A few of the athletes already
can see how into the sport the
coach is with his attitude toward
the sport. It’s special for many
to have a relatable coach who
once was in the same shoes they
are in now.
And he runs with them in every
workout.
“It’s awesome,” senior Kyle
Foley said. “I love having the
coach with us on the workouts.”
Does he skip out from doing a
run from time-to-time?
“He doesn’t skip out,” Foley
said.
While many senior graduated,
there’s still experience.
Senior Michael Seboni is excited
to return this season after
only competing in one meet last
year because of a hamstring injury.
The 4x800 relay team led
by Foley is excited to return all
of its members from last year’s
team that went down to state.
That experience is the reason
why they’re confident they can
go back.
“I think it’s going to win us
state,” Foley said. “Not a lot of
guys have that bond.”
But before that can happen,
they’ll need to keep on learning
from their new coach. Brandt
wants his team competing for
a conference title again and
building that team bond, but he
knows it’ll take time.
He doesn’t want to rush
things in the indoor season; it
takes time for things to come
full circle.
“They know that the goal is in
May,” Brandt said. “They don’t
have to rush anything in making
gains or improvement right now.”
Athlete of the Year
Glenbrook South’s
Sullivan cruises to crown
Michal Dwojak
Sports Editor
Jack Sullivan made
22nd Century Media’s
Athlete of the Year competition
look like an easy ace.
The Glenbrook South
graduate and former volleyball
player played catch
up early in the competition,
but once he took the
lead over New Trier’s boys
swimmer Charlie Scheinfeld,
it was easy sailing the
rest of the way.
Sullivan won the seventh
annual competition
with a total of 3,627 votes,
edging out Scheinfeld’s
1,901 votes and Loyola
Academy lacrosse’s Brennan
Dwyer, who finished
with 1,205 votes. The contest
ran from Jan. 26 to Friday,
Feb. 9, and spanned
across 18 different athletes
from six different schools
and eight different sports,
ranging from football to
water polo to swimming.
New Trier boys swimming’s
Patrick Gridley
finished fourth with 909
Spartans win North title
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
Although a number of
Glenbrook North’s top
swimmers aren’t even seniors,
they are having a
successful season.
And not only are the
Spartans a talented team
now, they have a strong
outlook for the future.
GBN won both the
Central Suburban League
North conference meet
Saturday, Feb. 10, at
Maine West with 386
points and the conference
title outright after a 5-0
conference record.
“The past two years,
we’ve finished second at
this meet,” GBN’s Jake
Shapiro said. “My grade
has been told we have as
much potential as anyone
to be successful. And this
is a good first step at manifesting
that. We’re looking
at having a strong next
two weeks and we hope
next year we can take the
next step and ultimately
become a top three team
at state. We’re going to be
rested going into sectionals
and look to continue to
do as well as we can.”
Shapiro, a junior, was
a big reason for the Spartans’
success, winning the
200-yard freestyle in 1
minute, 47.16 seconds.
“I got out to a lead but
was smart about how I
did it,” Shapiro said. “My
turns were good and I was
happy with my race strategy.
I was hoping to go a
couple seconds faster but
otherwise was happy with
how I swam. My training
partner (Fabian JuJescu)
took third so we were successful
in that event.”
And Shapiro won the
100 free as well (49.66).
“The first turn I looked
Glenbrook North’s Jake Shapiro swims the 200-yard freestyle at the Central
Suburban League North conference meet Saturday, Feb. 10, in Des Plaines. Scott
Margolin/22nd Century Media
and saw the guy next to me
was pretty even with me,”
Shapiro said. “So I started
to pick up the tempo. By
the time I got to the second
turn, I was pretty well
ahead of the rest of the
field.”
The Spartans are hoping
that their successful meet
is a sign of good things
to come during sectionals
and at state.
“We’re pretty much going
to be having the same
lineup next week as we
did today,” Shapiro said.
“Today was a good dress
rehearsal as far as what we
can expect going forward.
Today we weren’t focused
on finishes or times. We
just wanted to have the
best races we could. And
how we did shows we’re
capable of continuing to
have success.”
Other Spartans’ winners
included the 200 medley
relay of Ryan Purdy, Daniel
Kaufman, Zander Johnson
and Anthony Mrozowski
(1:40.59), Johnson in the
100 butterfly (55.89),
Purdy in the 500 free
(4:54.13), the 200 free relay
of Kaufman, JuJescu,
Mrozowski and Shapiro
(1:32.46), Kaufman in the
100 breaststroke (1:02.62)
and the 400 free relay of
JuJescu, Purdy, Anton
Ivanchenko and Shapiro
(3:22.03).
Highland Park’s Andrew
Vorobev faced tough competition
in the 100 backstroke
from Purdy. But he
ultimately took control and
won in 54.12.
“I knew it was going to
be a tight race,” Vorobev
said. “I was able to take
it out fast enough to get a
lead at the beginning. And
after the first half, I kept
getting better. I was able to
finish strong and if those
things happened, I had a
good chance.”
Vorobev also won the
200 individual-medley
(2:00.60). Even though his
back is his strongest stroke,
he feels the key to his improvement
in the IM is his
butterfly which helped him
start fast Saturday.
“As I’ve practiced and
worked on my fly, I’ve
definitely understood how
important it is to have
a fast and efficient fly
swim,” Vorobev said. “My
efficiency and speed in
the first 50 have definitely
gotten much better as I’ve
improved in the fly. I also
think my breaststroke has
come a long way.”
The Giants hope they
can build off of the conference
meet for their sectional.
“Sectionals is all racing
and that’s what we’ll
need to be ready for,” Vorobev
said. “This is our
first championship meet
of the season though and
it will help us get ready.
I think our team has performed
well and where we
are right now is ahead of
where people thought we
would be.”
Tobe Obochi won the 50
free (23.15) and was second
in the breast (1:02.83).
Other Giant’s second place
finishers were the medley
relay of Richard Heller,
Jake Reisner, Vorobev
and Obochi (1:42.68),
Konrad Schmid in the IM
(2:05.36) and Heller in the
fly (55.92). Highland Park
was third (326).

GBN finishes in Top 5 at sectional
Brittany Kappa
Contributing Sports Editor
There were several
themes at the Niles North
IHSA Sectional, but none
was more present than
youth and talent.
Every competition at the
sectional competition Feb.
6, was won by an underclassman.
As a team, the
Spartans rounded out the
Top 5 with 140.80 points.
Glenbrook South took the
top honors for the team
score.
GBN coach Julie Hombeck
was impressed with
what her team put forth at
the sectional.
“I’m just really proud
of them, honestly they’re
a great bunch of girls to
work with,” Holmbeck
said. “That’s the main
thing. They have a lot of
fun working together and
they’re a very coachable
group. If you’re working
with girls that are coachable,
and you want to be
in the gym every day with
them, it makes it enjoyable
for everyone.”
GBN’s Brittany Ullrich
placed second on the uneven
bars (9.375) with a
routine that she has been
working for roughly half
the year.
“Obviously I wanted
to do well on everything
but I came in here really,
really wanting to make it
on bars,” she said. “Bring
a senior too (this year), it
was fun to share the experience
with (my teammates).
“I’ve known some of
them for so long, so we’ve
been doing it together for
10 years. So to end like
this, together, is a great
way to end (my career).”
Glenbrook South gymnast
Sheena Graham won
the all-around.
Graham, a freshman,
stood out in every event.
Her strong performance
totaled 37.225 for the night
and a first-place medal
in the all-around. The Titans
as a whole won the
sectional with a 146.225,
nudging out New Trier
(146.15) who took second.
“My whole goal was to
stay confident, our whole
team stayed confident and
determined; we knew we
could do this,” Graham
said confidently after the
meet. “It’s kind of amazing.
I can’t believe I just
did this as a freshman. I
feel like I came into this
meet ready to compete my
best.”
Graham tied for third on
beam (9.325) and was part
of a four-way tie for fifth
place on the uneven bars
(9.325) in a sectional filled
with talented competition
— Graham’s teammate
Jenna Hartley, a sophomore,
finished second
(37.15) in the all-around.
Her standout performance
of the night was during her
third event of the night on
vault. Hartley squared up,
took a deep breath and
launched herself down
the padded run toward the
vault. She stuck her landing
after launching off the
platform.
“I had goosebumps up
and down my body,” GBS
coach Steve Gale said
about Hartley’s vault. “It
was a great vault. I turned
to the judges and said,
‘What did you give her?’
They both gave her a 9.8.”
Gale approached Hartley
after her first attempt
and suggested to stand
with that score, coaching
her that she could risk in-
Glenbrook North’s Brittany Ullrich competes in the beam at the Niles North Sectional
jury on another attempt.
Hartley’s score was a
full two-tenths of a point
ahead of New Trier’s Darcy
Barkal’s second-place
score
“We had just finished
floor and we were kind of
upset because we didn’t do
as well as we thought we
would,” Hartley said. “We
knew that vault was one of
our strongest events. We
just wanted to go out there
and go big or go home,
pretty much.”
Hartley followed Graham
on the vault, who
ended up taking third place
in the event.
“I’m just thrilled,” Gale
said about the overall performance.
“We have two
top vaulters with Jenna
and Sheena and both are
capable of doing a 9.8.
That vault of Jenna’s in a
high-stake meet like this is
just marvelous.”
Other standout individual
performances included
the Trevians’ Barkal, a
junior, who took the top
honor on the uneven bars,
ahead of Ullrich, with a
9.45.
“My warmups weren’t
my best and I was really
nervous at first but then
I just got less nervous
throughout the meet,” she
said. “It was my first big
high school meet like this
and didn’t know what to
expect really.”
Barkal’s experience
with sectional was more
positive than the one she
had at Glenbrook North
the week before during the
regional.
“She’s the one who was
calm and relaxed, somewhat,”
coach Jennifer
Pistorius said. “When we
had our first competition at
GBN, she was in tears because
she was so nervous
and anxious and had never
been in a situation like
that before. So to see her
do so well today, being so
relaxed, having fun in her
floor routine, she’s come
far and I’m proud of that.
“She’s an amazing gymnast
and that’s what we
wanted to see ... her having
fun and she did today.”
That calm must have
been contagious on the
team, as teammate Maeve
Murdock, a sophomore,
Glenbrook North goalie Tyler Laarveld about to stop
a penalty shot taken by Glenbrook South’s Ben
Thomas on Feb. 7, in Northbrook. Gary Larsen/22nd
Century Media
David Rubin struck
again.
With eight minutes remaining
in a scoreless
hockey game, the Glenbrook
North senior captain
skated up with a puck on
his stick and scored the
only goal the Spartans
would need in an eventual
2-0 win over rival Glenbrook
South.
Both Spartans goalie
Tyler Laarveld and Titans
goalie Jamie Dziurdzik
were outstanding in a wellplayed
game both ways.
But like he’s done in all
five games this year between
the two teams, Rubin’s
name loomed largest
on the scoresheet.
It was Rubin’s 70th goal
of the year.
“When it comes down
to it, David Rubin scores
again,” Glenbrook North
assistant coach Paul Gauger
said. “It’s always just a
matter of time before we
get him on the board.”
The Feb. 7 game was the
first in a best-of-three series,
in opening-round play
of the Scholastic Hockey
League playoffs at the
Northbrook Sports Center.
Two scoreless periods
saw the Spartans earn a
31-24 edge in shots on
goal. Laarveld came up
big with roughly three
minutes remaining in the
period when he stopped a
penalty shot taken by the
Titans’ Ben Thomas.
“(Laarveld) made some
really good saves and we
hit three posts in the second
period,” Glenbrook
South coach Jim Philbin
said. “It’s a game of inches.
“We’ve played them all
year long and it’s been
one-goal games. Tonight
was the first time it’s been
a two-goal difference.
Now, we’ve really got to
bring it on Tuesday.”
The series’ second game
will be played on the Titans’
home ice in Glenview.
The Spartans tested
Dziurdzik throughout, but
couldn’t get a puck past
him through two periods.
Glenbrook North has
found itself in a bit of a
scoring lull recently.
“It’s kind of how we’ve
been the last four or five
games. We’ve had trouble
scoring,” Gauger said.
“We’re getting a ton of
shots but it’s been four
games since we’ve scored
five-on-five.
“I don’t know that we’re
snakebit but it gets to a
point where they start
thinking about too much,
they tense up, and it kind
of snowballs.”
Tim Burke, David Wilcox
and the Glenbrook
North defense has played
well all year, and they
picked it up in the third
period, limiting the Titans
to a handful of scoring
chances on Laarveld.
Laarveld and Brennan
Nein have been rock-solid
in net all year for the Spartans.
“It definitely helps,”
Wilcox said of having two
quality goalies. “It gives
us a sense of comfortability
back there and allows
you to take some risks because
you know your goalie’s
got your back. Having
two strong goaltenders is a
huge key.
“It’s important that
we’re strong in our defensive
end because we
somewhat have a lack of
production in some games.
But if we can hold teams
out and get shutouts, we’ll
be successful all year
long.”
playoffs.
Freelance Reporter
Like every wrestler in
Illinois, Glenbrook North
junior Trent Williams began
the season dreaming
of making it to the individual
state finals.
“That was my goal
but at the time I honestly
didn’t see it coming true,”
Williams said.
Williams can stop
dreaming after placing
second in Barrington at
220 pounds in the IHSA
Sectional on Saturday,
Feb. 10.
The top four finishers
in each weight class advance
downstate, and Williams
(35-7) punched his
ticket to Champaign with
a 9-2 championship semifinal
decision over Hononegah’s
Nate Kaiser.
After a 0-0 first period,
Kaiser chose bottom to
start the second period and
Williams rode him out and
turned him twice for a 6-0
lead, then turned Kaiser
again in the third in taking
a 9-0 lead.
“I’ve been pretty good
on top all year,” Williams
said. “I just knew if he
wanted to keep it scoreless
in the first period, then
I could at least ride him
out.”
Despite qualifying
downstate for the first
time, Williams barely celebrated
after his momentous
win over Kaiser.
“I haven’t really processed
this yet but I just
want to stay humble,”
Williams said. Glenbrook
North coach Jason Erwinski
was beaming after Williams’
Champaign-clinching
win.
“He’s getting everything
he deserves,” Erwinski
said. “He works
hard, he’s a great young
man, and he’s been a pleasure
to coach so far. It’s a
little emotional because
he works so hard and as a
coach you love to see that
out of a kid.”
Williams finished second
in a 7-3 decision to
Cary Grove’s Cadin Koeppel.
Junior Cam Casey
also competed for Glenbrook
North and finished
the year with a 34-9 record
at 182 pounds.
Loyola’s Sean Cloherty
and Quinn McCarthy
weren’t able to advance
downstate this year, and
Ramblers coach Joe Haney
lost much more than just a
few senior wrestlers.
“It’s hard for me to talk
about either of them right
now,” Haney said.
“They’re both fantastic
guys. Sean has an ROTC
scholarship and all the kids
look up to him, even some
of his fellow seniors, and
Quinn is just a great kid,
super-smart and I’m pretty
sure he’s trying to go to an
Ivy League school.”
McCarthy finished 23-
11 at 138 pounds and
Cloherty went 34-8 at
145 pounds and set new
program records in career
wins and pins at Loyola.
“Sean has been sick for
the last two days, so he
didn’t have his full arsenal
this weekend,” Haney
said. “He wasn’t at school
Thursday because he was
sick so I was just hoping
he’d be better. But he felt
worse today than he felt
yesterday so the timing
was just awful.”
The Ramblers’ practice
room next year will start
out in transition mode with
Cloherty and McCarthy
gone.
“When they’re not in the
room, you can tell they’re
not there. The intensity
level drops, big-time,”
Haney said.
“They’re always grinding,
working hard, and
they were like that as juniors,
too. I hope our juniors
coming back next
year can pick up the slack
but at the beginning of the
year, there’s going to be a
little bit of a hole because
those two kids won’t be
there.”
New Trier senior Patrick
Ryan has been one
of Illinois’ best wrestlers
for three seasons, and
was a sectional runner-up
in advancing to the Class
3A state tournament in
his sophomore and junior
years.
But this season, Ryan
is simply at another level.
Glenbrook North’s Trent Williams (left) on the mat
against Hononegah’s Nate Kaiser in a semifinal match
at 220 pounds Saturday, Feb. 10, in Barrington. Gary
Larsen/22nd Century Media
He won his first sectional
title at Barrington on Saturday,
Feb. 11, and was
one of only four wrestlers
at the sectional to remain
unbeaten on the year.
“I know that if I put
three good periods together
I can beat anyone in the
state,” Ryan said. “And if I
can put four good matches
together, I know I can win
a state title and that’s the
ultimate goal.”
Ryan won 7-5 over
Fremd’s Cole Riemer on
the title mat at 145 pounds
and will take a 44-0 record
to next week’s individual
state finals in Champaign.
Ryan is currently ranked
fourth in Illinois at 145 by
Illinois Matmen.
“Cole and I have wrestled
a bunch,” Ryan said.
“I know he’s super strong,
physical, and really good
on top. But I have confidence
that I can go with
anyone on my feet. The
game plan was to get a
good first-period lead and
then just play it smart from
there.”
In placing second at 152
to Barrington’s Markus
Hartman, Trevians senior
Jack Tangen (41-2) also
advanced downstate.
“But overall I thought
Barrington had one of the
toughest fields at 152 and
I was happy with the way
I pushed the pace there.
Now my goal is to get to
the podium and I feel a
lot more confident going
(downstate) this year.”
Also competing at the
sectional for New Trier
were seniors Bayne Kiser
(30-17 at 160), Russell
Sanchez (27-16 at 170),
and Jimmy McDermed
(30-13 at 285).
Listen Up
“That was my goal. But at the same time I
honestly didn’t see it coming true.”
