New Trier invites local families to Winter Carnival
Submitted by New Trier
High School
Local residents, friends
and children of all ages
are invited to New Trier
High School’s 24th Annual
Winter Carnival,
during which the entire
school will transform into
a carnival ground with activities,
prizes, food, and
much more. The event is
hosted by the New Trier
senior class and benefits
their Habitat for Humanity
project, which involves
As part of the Leadership
Institute Speaker Series,
Renee Czeryba, manager
of store care programs at
Walgreens, spoke to Regina
Dominican students
about finding her role at
Walgreens, her gifts, how
her Catholic education has
helped her to succeed and
giving back.
Her Leadership Institute
presentation titled, “Finding
and Sharing your Gifts
by Giving Back,” reflected
on the leadership opportunities
that brought her to her
current position. Czeryba is
responsible for the interior
and exterior lighting and
sign repair for more than
8,100 Walgreens locations.
She directs multi-million
dollar contracts with many
vendors.
Here are some of her
most important lessons:
Take advantage of every
opportunity no matter
how exciting it would
seem.
Czeryba reminded students
to never judge a
book by its cover. She told
building homes for local,
underserved families
through physical labor and
fundraising.
The family-friendly opportunity
to support a good
cause will take place 5:30-
9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at
the Winnetka campus, 385
Winnetka Ave. Admission
at the main entrance is free
and activity tickets are $1
each. Parking is free and
is available in the lots on
the east side of the school
as well as in any space
marked “New Trier High
students about an internship
she took on at GE
that on the surface did
not seem exciting. She
took the internship with
an open mind because she
did not want to pass up an
opportunity to expand her
skills. As she dove into
the internship, she began
to grow. She was given
assignments that really
made a difference in the
organization. One of her
assignments was a satisfaction
survey that brought
to light some issues and
solutions for her employer.
Renee believes her experience
at GE was one of the
most valuable internships
she had. She is happy she
took advantage of the opportunity,
and believes that
you will learn something
from every experience and
everyone you meet.
Always make sure you
are learning and growing.
Czeryba told students to
not be satisfied with being
comfortable. It is important
to challenge yourself
and embrace change. As
Eleanor Roosevelt said,
“You must do the things
you think you cannot do.”
School” in the Indian Hill
lot adjacent to the Metra
lot at Winnetka Avenue
and Green Bay Road.
For this year’s event, senior
Adviser Rooms will
host more than 45 booths
to appeal to kids of all
ages, Senior adviser cochair
Chris Pearson said.
Carnival-goers can expect
everything from the classics,
like ring toss and
Bozo Buckets, to more
unique activity booths,
such as Crazy Hair Salon
and Nerf Safari.
She shared her experience
joining the operations team
at Walgreens without having
a background in store
maintenance. She took the
position because it would
allow her to try something
new, knowing that if she
did not like the position,
she could go back to her
original field. Renee is
happy in her new role and
credits her desire to learn
more for putting her in this
position.
When life suddenly
“It’s rewarding to see
Winter Carnival working
full-circle, because many
of the senior students who
attended as small children
are now the ones leading
it,” Senior Adviser Cochair
Susie Paunan said.
The year’s booths include:
Czeryba was a member
of the Walgreens Disaster
Response team for the
2017 Hurricane Relief Efforts
and part of her responsibilities
included placing
mobile pharmacies hurricane
disaster zones this
past summer. She needed to
set up these pharmacies in
Florida. Renee had not set
up these temporary pharmacies
before and needed
to work within a very strict
deadline to get customers
the prescriptions they needed.
She set up a plan by
outlining what was needed,
who needed to be involved,
and what questions needed
to be asked. By outlining a
plan first, Renee was able
to see what she needed to
accomplish and ultimately
achieve her goal in a timely
manner.
Find your gifts and talents.
of knowing your gifts and
talents. When you know
and understand your gifts
and talents, you are able to
understand your direction,
better achieve your goals
and give back to others.
She shared some reflective
ways in which you can help
you discover your gifts:
· What excites you?
· What do you do that
makes you feel good emotionally
and spiritually?
· Ask others to let you
know the gifts they see in
you.
· Think about your
“hero” or role model(s).
· What are their special
qualities or traits?
· What similarities do
you share?
· Think about your family
and what gifts you share.
· What tugs at your heart?
· If you could do anything
you’d like today,
what would it be?
Czeryba’s presentation
was a wonderful way to
conclude the first week of
school in 2018. As we look
at our new year resolutions,
we are able to use Renee’s
tips to help us find our gifts,
direction and opportunities
to grow.
