Our Life and Arts
cover story features
Winnetkan Dave
Carlson and the completion
of his eight-year film on
radio legend Joe Frank.
In our interview, I caught
on to Carlson’s passion for
both film and advocacy
of one-mand-band media
work (i.e. without the help
of big-name producers and
Hollywood budgets).
While daunting, Carlson’s
feat is something we
all can learn from.
No matter how long a
task may take, we should
take pride in our work
and acknowledge quality
doesn’t happen in a day.
Often, jobs that take the longest
are the ones where we
learn the most about not just
the subject, but ourselves.
Also, we can learn tenacity.
Carlson self-funded
his project, but it did not
mean he gave up on telling
what he (and those interviewed)
felt was a quality
story worth telling.
I tip my hat off to Carlson
for completing a project
that, while not easy, is one
he should be proud of.
the team has a burning desire to become even
More the Catholic church
can do
Is there some irony here?
Cardinal Cupich’s liaison,
Rev. Jason Malave, in
commenting on the area’s
churches that will combine
operations, [Winnetka
Current, Feb. 1], said, “We
cannot put our heads in the
sand and pretend that there
are enough priests...”
Wait, what? Really? Rev.
Malave is making an assumption
that Catholic parishioners
are putting their
heads in the sand?
Doesn’t the real question
concern why have so few
men have found themselves
called to the priesthood?
Why did the Archdiocese
in 2017 ordain only six
priests?
Could it be that the celibacy
requirement has deterred
men from choosing
to spend their adult lives in
the ordained ministry?
‘Snow’ much
Kaitlin Vagra, of Winnetka,
message following last
Friday’s snowfall so she
could read it from their
laundry room window.
The requirement of celibacy
for all clergy wasn’t
adopted until the first Lateran
Council of 1123. So
technically, this obligation
doesn’t speak to doctrine
or dogma. Aside from logistics,
maybe what drives
the church’s insistence on
celibacy is a deep-rooted
sexism, an idea that women
cannot be spouses to priests.
As a lifelong Catholic
churchgoer and Sacred
Heart parishioner, I find it
deeply troubling that — in
facing the crisis of vocations
to the priesthood as
well as falling church attendance
— the decision makers
fail to confront the root
causes of the problem. They
see combining parishes as a
solution.
While the priests and pastors
and bishops, and even
Cardinal Cupich, are acting
in obedience to their superiors,
I wish they could discuss
the issues that shake the
American church at its core,
because allowing priests to
marry might provide a huge
boost in vocations.
I have always loved my
parish, and even today, miss
going to Mass. But it’s time
to boycott a church that, if it
listens, refuses to act.
No downtown TIF
To the Village Board:
Tax Increment Finance
Districts were made legal
decades ago as a tool to help
blighted areas.
While the downtown is
not thriving like neighbors
of Glencoe, Highland Park
and Wilmette, $14 million
to tinker with the streetscape
is not the answer.
About 10 years ago, the
Village made similar improvements
being discussed
now. Maybe, neighborly
talks will prove overly restrictive
regulations hamper
Winnetka. But, every TIF
mandates higher taxes for
20 years and siphons taxes
away from schools, park
districts and such.
The Village has ample
resources without using a
tax structure never intended
from one of the richest
towns in Illinois. Find another
way.
