winnetkacurrent.com school the winnetka current | February 15, 2018 | 33 Avoca orchestra teacher hits a career high note SUBMITTED BY AVOCA SCHOOL DISTRICT 37 Last month, Avoca West Elementary School orchestra teacher Nancy Magill was recognized as the Outstanding Public School Teacher by the Illinois American String Teacher Association. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to one orchestra educator in Illinois that has achieved or maintained excellence in their program through the use of innovative teaching techniques and creative connections with the community. Magill has been teaching orchestra in public schools for 37 years and started her position at Avoca West in 1999. She received her master’s in music from Northwestern University and has extensive experience teaching both Suzuki and traditional strings, which brings a mastery to the program at Avoca that is evident whenever you hear her students play. Throughout her time at Avoca, she has had the opportunity to inspire students starting as early as first grade, many of which continue on a lifetime journey with their instruments. “Her students are beautifully set up and they perform with such technical precision and accuracy,” said Becca Oppenheim, a former student of Magill’s, who nominated her and is now a strings teacher. “Her young musicians adore her and they strive for excellence because of her high expectations.” Inspiring this type of commitment to learning an instrument requires a Nancy Magill, orchestra teacher at Avoca West Elementary School, was recognized by the Illinois American String Teacher Association as an Outstanding Public School Teacher. Magill is retiring at the end of this year. This award is timely, as Magill prepares to retire from Avoca at the end of this school year. She will join a long list of exemplary strings teachers including fellow Avoca instructor, Mary Rudzinski, who received the award in 2007. Magill was presented with the Outstanding Public School Teacher by the Illinois American String Teacher Association Jan. 26 in Peoria in conjunction with the Illinois Music Educators Conference. School News BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY Northfield resident Eddy Bigelow and Winnetka residents Mike Boehm, Tally Ford, Sarah Lumberg, Heather Mabie, Madeline Mulford and Ally Raith were named to the fall semester dean’s list for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. CARTHAGE COLLEGE Kathryn Engler, of Winnetka, was named to Carthage College’s dean’s list for the fall semester. DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Winnetka residents Hadley Bushonville, James Clarke and Beatrice Harvey were named to DePauw University’s fall dean’s list for a GPA higher than 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. EMERSON COLLEGE Elissa Bazylewicz, of Northfield,was named to the Emerson College dean’s list for the fall semester. Bazylewicz is majoring in media arts production. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY This past December, local Georgia tech graduates included Winnetka resident Nicholas Gossen, who graduated with a master’s of science in mechanical engineering, and Winnetka resident Spencer Wilson, who graduated with a bachelor’s of science in industrial engineering. KNOX COLLEGE Shannon Brooks, of Winnetka, was named to the Knox College dean’s list of distinguished students for the fall term. JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY Brandon Callison, of Winnetka, was named to John Carroll University’s fall dean’s list. LEHIGH UNIVERSITY Winnetka residents Monica Fehrenbach, Zoe Gottlieb, Emily Lindblad, Ann Pigott and Hanna Skinner were named to Lehigh University’s dean’s list for the fall semester for earning a 3.6 GPA or higher. MIAMI UNIVERSITY Haley Paez, of Winnetka, was named to the president’s list at Miami University for the fall semester. Winnetka residents Lainey Flanagan and Haley Hunken and Northfield residents Jennifer Siegel and Krista Mersino were named to the dean’s list. OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY Northfield resident Anastasia Pellar was named to the fall dean’s honor roll. OAKTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE Winnetka residents Lukas Andraschko, Erik Bounds, Katherine Christian, Erin Crowe, Will Deheeger, Julie Erst, Connor Fitzgerald, Lynda Kolb, Andrew McNett, Sean Phelan, Mary Weilandt and Lynn Wellehan along with Northfield residents Pauline Abellar, Gertrude Ahegbebu, Tristan Jacobs and Paul Kuhns were named to Oakton Community College’s fall 2017 president’s scholar honors list. Those named to the list must earn a 4.0 grade point average. UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA Northfield resident Jane de Loys and Winnetka resident Robert Hanslip were named to the dean’s list at University of Alabama. UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON Northfield residents McKenna Crockford and Kathleen Klein and Winnetka residents Alexandra Christian, David Kelley and Sarah Sheridan were named to University of Dayton’s fall 2017 dean’s list. UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE Winnetka resident Nicholas Hochschild and Northfield resident Adam Zelinsky were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Northfield native Michelle Grantman received a bachelor’s in elementary education at the close of the fall semester at University of Iowa.
