Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Liz Coughlin
Liz Coughlin is a sophomore
at Woodlands Scared
Heart Academy in Lake
Forest and is a member of
the girls basketball team.
How did you get
started playing
basketball?
I started playing basketball
in first grade. I started
at (Northbrook’s) local
YMCA. Then I played
park district basketball and
then I got into the feeder
program for my local high
school. I played a little bit
of travel and then I ended
up at Woodlands and
started playing basketball
there.
Why do you love
playing basketball?
I think my favorite part
of basketball is watching
the team work together
to achieve a goal. Like
in defense, it’s obviously
fun to play by yourself but
it makes the sport even
better when everyone is
working together to defend
or try and score a
basket.
What is the most
challenging part of the
sport?
Probably on the same
line would be trusting
other people to do their
job. It’s the same with any
other team sport, you have
to believe that people do
what they say they’re going
to do otherwise there
is just no way you’re going
to succeed.
What was a favorite
moment of yours from
this past season?
This year we had a few
games in which we started
our very strong. Instead
of kind of backing off on
driving and not getting
ahead by a lot, we managed
to keep pushing and
get some margin of leads
against good teams.
Who is your favorite
professional athlete?
I’d say that would by
Joakim Noah. He used to
play for the Chicago Bulls
and now I think he is on
the New York Knicks. He
has always been fun to
watch.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would
you go?
I’d say Japan but luckily
for me I actually am
going to be going to Japan
later this year as part of a
school trip.
What are you excited
to do in Japan?
I’m excited to get immersed
in the culture.
Obviously see some local
sites, but mostly meet
people and overall just
have a good time somewhere
else.
What is your go-to
drink at Starbucks?
The smoked butterscotch
frappacino.
What is something you
want to do off of your
bucket list?
It would probably would
be to go to an observatory
and either do a tour or even
use the telescope myself.
My dream job would be to
be an astrophysicist.
How did you decide
you wanted to be an
astrophysicist?
I’ve always been interested
in astronomy and
I do really like math. It
seemed to me that astrophysics
was a combination
of the more technical
aspects of astronomy and
math.
