CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILY
“Don’t worry about anything, instead pray – about everything!” Philippians 4:4-7 (paraphrased)
On February 11 and 12, our church school kids celebrated the start Lent by visiting a variety of hands-on workshop stations
that focused on prayer. They explored everything from yoga & embodied prayer, to gratitude journals, to a prayer labyrinth.
One of the kids’ favorite activities was these sensory bottles or “calm down bottles.” Life can often feel crazy and kids can
feel shaken and full of anxiety. Watching the glitter slowly settle in the bottles is a great way for children to center themselves
and practice mindfulness. The bottles help us feel calm— and prayer does too! These bottles are a great reminder to
talk to God.
PAUSE FOR PRAYER BOTTLE RECIPE
1-16 oz. or 500 ml bottle, empty
1/2 cup light corn syrup
Small bowl
Whisk or fork
Funnel
2-3 T. fine glitter
1/2 cup HOT water
1 1/2 cups WARM water
Hot glue or super glue
Dish soap
Optional:
White Elmer’s Glue
Food Coloring
Using a sturdy plastic or glass bottle works best. VOSS style water bottles are convenient as it allows the child to turn the
bottle on either end. SmartWater bottles are also thicker and work well. Pour the corn syrup and glitter into the bowl and
whisk to combine well. Add a small amount of HOT water to the corn syrup/glitter mixture to help the syrup dissolve. Add
a little more until you reach about 1/2 cup total. Using a funnel, pour the mixture into the bottle. Be sure to scrape as
much glitter into the bottle as you can. Fill the bottle almost to the top with warm water and shake.
If your glitter is moving too fast, add more corn syrup. If your glitter is in a floating clump, add 1-2 tsp of dish soap. If you
would like colored water, add a drop or two of food coloring. If you would like opaque water, add a tablespoon of glue
(be sure to dissolve it in warm water a bit first).
